P.L. Travers

Pamela Lyndon Travers was an Australian novelist, actress and journalist, popularly remembered for her series of children's novels about mystical nanny Mary Poppins.
She was born to bank manager Travers Robert Goff and Margaret Agnes. Her father died when she was seven, and although "epileptic seizure delirium" was given as the cause of death, Travers herself "always believed the underlying cause was sustained, heavy drinking".
Travers began to publish her poems while still a teenager and wrote for The Bulletin and Triad while also gaining a reputation as an actress. She toured Australia and New Zealand with a Shakespearean touring company before leaving for England in 1924. There she dedicated herself to writing under the pen name P. L. Travers.
In 1925 while in Ireland, Travers met the poet George William Russell who, as editor of The Irish Statesman, accepted some of her poems for publication. Through Russell, Travers met William Butler Yeats and other Irish poets who fostered her interest in and knowledge of world mythology. Later, the mystic Gurdjieff would have a great effect on her, as would also have on several other literary figures.
The 1934 publication of Mary Poppins was Travers' first literary success.Five sequels followed, as well as a collection of other novels, poetry collections and works of non-fiction.
The Disney musical adaptation was released in 1964. Primarily based on the first novel in what was then a sequence of four books, it also lifted elements from the sequel Mary Poppins Comes Back. Although Travers was an adviser to the production she disapproved of the dilution of the harsher aspects of Mary Poppins's character, felt ambivalent about the music and disliked the use of animation to such an extent that she ruled out any further adaptations of the later Mary Poppins novels. At the film's star-studded premiere, she reportedly approached Disney and told him that the animated sequence had to go. Disney responded by saying "Pamela, the ship has sailed." and walked away. Travers would never again agree to another Poppins/Disney adaptation, though Disney made several attempts to persuade her to change her mind.
So fervent was Travers' dislike of the Walt Disney adaptation and the way she felt she had been treated during the production, that well into her 90s, when she was approached by producer Cameron Mackintosh to do the stage musical, she only acquiesced upon the condition that only English born writers (and specifically no Americans) and no one from the film production were to be directly involved with the creative process of the stage musical. This specifically excluded the Sherman Brothers from writing additional songs for the production even though they were still very prolific. Original songs and other aspects from the 1964 film were allowed to be incorporated into the production however. These points were stipulated in her last will and testament.
Travers was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1977. She died in London in 1996.
Although Travers never married, she adopted a boy when she was in her late 30s.

Although the rather all encompassing emphasis on rich, often gravy and meat laden recipes certainly does make very much historical sense, I also have to admit that I do tend to find both the story and the featured food selections of P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book With a Story not all that personally appealing both with my general reading pleasure regarding the Banks children and Mary Poppins having to get, needing to cook their own meals for a week (because the Banks’ family cook has gone to help out her sister) and also with considering what the featured recipes themselves would probably be like taste and texture like once prepared.

Because yes and indeed, the actual themes and contents of Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book With a Story , they do feel rather uninspiring and often annoyingly repetitive, and with P.L. Travers basically having rather a similar food based text for every day of the week, this certainly does in my humble opinion then start to get tedious by about the section for Tuesday, feeling like Travers is presenting a list of Mary Poppins series characters on parade and one new recipe after another but not really all that gracefully incorporated (and not to mention that in my humble opinion, it would be much better if the list of recipes and detailed cooking instructions would not be relegated to the back of Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book With a Story as I sure do not at all like having to be constantly flipping back and forth). And yes, like with all cookbooks, I also (and with much frustration) really do think that the recipes presented in Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book With a Story certainly do need to have accompanying photographs provided, so that especially novice cooks will be able to know what the meals they are preparing are supposed to look like once completed.

Celebrity Death Match Review

'Mary'

'Yes, Mary?'

'Whilst you were out helping the sweeps, a note was passed under the door; the contents of which are quite remarkable.'

'Who is it from, Mary dear?'

'Mrs *spit* Beeton'

'Let me have a look'...

Dear Ms Poppins

Knowing that you are an avid reader, I am sure you have already noticed that I have been called upon to look after a recently orphaned little Walter de la Mare character:

Page 52 of 'Memoirs of a Midget': For the charge of thirty shillings a week Mrs B has consented to give board lodging and reasonable attendance. In all the circumstances this seems to me to be a moderate sum. Mr Pellow [old clergyman] assures me that Mrs B is clean, honest and a practicing Christian.

The above, coupled with celebrity status in my newest reincarnation, means that I really cannot put hand on heart and say that I am up for any more of these lexiconical ninja fights with the likes of you. The thought of grappling with a short furry bear thing in the next round is beyond credibility, so I withdraw unsullied from this base whirligig.

Yours sincerely
Isabella Beeton

PS Hope you didn't catch a cold after your dip in the canal.

'Well upon my soul and her sole supper! Game set and match to us; cup of celebratory tea, Mary?

'Indeed, I'll have a little sugar in that.'

P.L. Travers, who penned Mary Poppins and its various sequels, published this wonderful cookbook in the 1970s. Beloved characters from the Mary Poppins books, from Mr. and Mrs. Turvy to the lady who sells birdseed at St. Paul's to Admiral Boom to Mrs. Corry and her daughters and many more, reappear to populate the story that introduces the recipes, which are listed alphabetically at the end.

The story is a delight, and you'll find yourself scribbling down recipes to save for later if you borrowed this book from the library, as I did. Highly recommended.

How fun! I liked this book way more than I did the first! Haha!

Seven little chapters, one for each day of the week and each day Jane, Michael, and Mary Poppins have an adventure in the kitchen! Complete with recipes of all that they made.

A great gift for the child in love with Mary Poppins and cooking!

Come faranno?

This Mary Poppins novella and cookbook finds Mary Poppins and the children alone in the house while Cook is away. The children learn to cook under the expert teachings of Mary Poppins, and various neighbors and characters arrive to assist them in the kitchen.

The recipes used in the story are alphabetized at the end of the book.

This is a sweet little companion novella to the Mary Poppins series! While not a full story, it does have a good storyline and charming writing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but you must be prepared to get hungry while reading about all the delicious food!

You want to already be a fan of the story books about Poppins and the Banks and their friends. Also of heavy British cooking. And you already have to know how to cook; so much is dependent on knowing stuff like what the batter should feel like, and that a key ingredient of Yorkshire pudding, meat drippings, does not need to be mentioned in the ingredient list. I found the story to be a superficial set of very brief adventures, and the recipes to be unappealing.

A thin volume stitching together a week’s worth of menus based on and inspired by the Mary Poppins tales. The short story introduction is more for structure and an excuse for character cameos than for entertainment but the recipes themselves are interesting and I look forward to trying several of them.

A cute little story and cookbook for kids. Mary Poppins is left in charge of the Banks kids for a week and Jane and Michael -- along with John and Barbara, while Annabel plays -- want to help Mary make dinner each day. So then there are 7 short chapters, one for each day, about the meals they're making and the neighbors (all characters from previous Mary Poppins books) who come to visit. In the back of the book are recipes for most of the dishes the Banks family makes with Mary Poppins. Some of them look like really good recipes, and if I were more adventurous, I might consider making them while I'm stuck in the house during this COVID-19 lockdown.

The best part of the book, though, is the full-page illustrations. They're BEAUTIFUL!

-------------------
4/19/20 - As I'm completing the entire series, since I gave so many of the books 3 stars, but have very different feelings about them, I'm going back and sort of re-rating/ranking them.

This is remaining a solid 3 stars. It's a fine book for its intended purpose: a cook book for kids, with a little bit of a story.

To be honest I only skimmed through the recipes since I won't be doing them any time soon, but I gathered they are child friendly and so easy that I child can help you with it and feel accomplished in the end .. I really enjoyed the week The Banks children spent cooking with Mary Poppins and I felt it was like a christmas special for a TV Show
and with that I have officially finished the Mary Poppins Series
* PEACE OUT *

Most of the meals sound mediocre, but the story is adorable and the illustrations are some of my favorite out of all the books. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this series over the summer.

The food descriptions made me positively hungry! I was ready to whip up some of the concoctions that would normally sound very beyond my skill (souffle, anyone?). Fun story with yummy sounding recipes, it's enough to make one drool!

No surprises here. This was a fun short story with full-color pictures to go along. The second half of the book is all of the recipes for the dishes Mary Poppins makes with the Banks children throughout the story. Some of them look tasty!

It's a cookery book with just a dash of context. Nothing substantial but if you want to meet your reading goal, it's a fine addition.

Well... it's a cook book, with recipes, and the recipes are fitted into a story. A pretty bad story. It doesn't have any of the early Mary Poppins charm and magic. All the "friends and relatives" visiting are old acquaintances, and they are just cooking, and repeating things from the previous books. It's not bad, but it isn't good either.

The recipes sound good. Good old-fashioned English home cooking.

Day 1: “Roast beef,” said Mary Poppins. “And Yorkshire pudding to go with it and just a suspicion of cabbage.”
with gingerbread as dessert. I always thought the gingerbread was like cookies, but these are like small cakes. With raisins.
Day 2: “Shepherd’s pie always comes after roast beef. It uses up the remains. Carrots, and mashed potatoes for the top of the pie and apple charlotte to follow.”
Day 3: Irish stew (of lamb chops) and upside down cake with peaches.
Day 4: beef patties with green peas and bread-and-butter pudding.
Day 5: roast chicken and bread sauce for dinner and green beans and fruit salad
Day 6: Lancashire hot pot and cherry pie
Day 7: Chicken, green salad, potatoes and a lemon soufflé

There's also a recipe for
date bread, honey and bananas (bananas baked in honey and butter... slurp!), Easter cake, jam tarts, twelfth night cake, meringues, nut loaf, oatmeal cookies, queen of puddings, fried trout, very plain cake, walnut cake, candy kisses (sounds like some sort of marzipan), and zodiac cake. I don't know what makes it a zodiac cake, it's a chocolate nut cake. Decorated with silver stars. Or not.

This book started with some quick little stories, one for each day of the week, and the rest of the book was the recipes from the stories.

For my first Mary Poppins book, it was adorable. Short and easy to read. Beautiful illustrations. Very reminiscent of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books. I can't wait to read these more of these to my daughter.

Wouldn't it make a wonderful project to follow along with Mary Poppins and make the recipes as you read the book? Hmmm...

Another fantastical twist, this story/cookbook was a cute addition to the Mary Poppins legacy. Some of the recipes were… interesting. Each visiting character was creatively executed.

“Tomorrow we will start.”
“But you’re always telling us, Mary Poppins, that tomorrow never comes.”
“Well, call it Monday,” said Mary Poppins. “For Monday never fails to come.”

Half of this book are short stories of Mary Poppins and the children cooking in the kitchen while their parents are away. There are some of the characters from the other books in it like the Bird Women. The second half of the book are recipes, most are meat based or sweets and I don't foresee myself making any of these recipes.

I admit that I did not read through all of the recipes. But, Donna will pick one recipe to try. It's a cute idea and fun to revisit some of the well-known characters from the books. But, it didn't have the same magic as the first books.
