I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Five: A Dark Why Choose Romance Inspired by Peter Pan and the Lost Boys from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Five is great for fans of:
• Fans of their favourite childhood Disney movies being given a darker twist
• Why choose?
• A mystery that keeps you in suspense with twists and turns
• Found family
Flynn and Rae have created a haunting, contemporary parallel of Peter Pan in The Florida Keys. When our main female character, Neve, was a child, her brother was one of the countless boys kidnapped and believed to be taken onto one of the islands, never to return. Regardless of the shadows of her past, after graduating, Neve decides to return home for the first time since her brother’s disappearance to start up a day care centre. As someone who is career focused Neve is reluctant to cave into her desires of pursing a polyamorous relationship, and it is not until her best friend signs her up for an app and she meets Oliver, an author who is much closer to her past than she could have anticipated.
Of course, it is at this point when the past begins to haunt Neve once again: Neve’s daycare centre is broken into, the kidnaps resume, and the culprit doesn’t seem to be finished with Neve. With her safety on the line, Neve has no choice but to move in with the boys as things begin to unravel — and it’s not just the case that gets complicated.
I did enjoy Five. The prequel, B4, is added to the beginning and provides snippets that allow you to instantly engage with the protagonists that you are about to see throughout the novel. Although it is useful, you can read the main story without it and wouldn’t have any issues, it just provides some context of the character’s backgrounds when they are mentioned throughout the story. The novel provides numerous twists and turns that leave you eager to find out what happens next, and the twist on the Peter Pan tale we all know and love is creative and works incredibly well.
A large majority of the novel is focused on Neve getting to know all of the boys, which is incredibly important, with the mystery parts of the novel taking more of a prominent role in the beginning and the end. Although I loved all of the content of Neve and her boys, with scenes that I can reassure any ‘why choose’ reader will love, I am looking forward to more plot driven content in the second book, Six, where we will hopefully get some of the answers to the easter eggs dropped throughout Five. I thought that it was especially clever of Flynn and Rae to include Beck’s in the prequel to tease his appearance in Six, as I am excited to see him take more of a focal role.
The one character I wasn’t a massive fan of was Jesse. Although his attitude and anxieties were understandable after his past experiences, his hot and cold behaviours did feel a bit whiplash at some points and were a bit uncomfortable to read, but I don’t think that it’s something that is going to follow on through to Six.
As said in the blurb, you can easily stop at Five, I’d say at the penultimate chapter especially, and finish content that Neve and her men have their ‘happy for now.’ However, with so much remaining to be seen, I will be reading Six and would encourage anyone else who enjoys this book to do the same. There will be a whole new playing field with Beck, and I can’t wait to see what he brings, alongside the mystery and intrigue of the ‘Lost Boys’ case.
Are they truly lost forever, or do they simply join the cause? Will Nicky remain the ghost of Oliver and Neve’s past, or will he return as someone that tears apart their memories entirely? I’m so lost in the suspense!
Peter Pan lovers, you need to get onto this one.
