Last Blue: Poems

Rate this book
A luminous new collection by the winner of the 1998 National Book Award for Poetry. Of these outstanding new poems, Gerald Stern "Light vs. darkness has always been one of my themes, but now more than ever. Not only is this the root--and metaphor--for all the major religions, but the almost biological frame of reference for humans. With me, it is overwhelming, personal."

I almost love this. Some pieces are wonderful. Some less so.

Some of the poetry moved me; some shook me to the core. At times, I was reminded of the Beatnik poets, with abstract thoughts strung together to make a patchwork picture. Is it fruit or passion? Winged wonders or just left wondering? Delicious. It left me breathless, still wanting more.

A truly delightful collection of poetry. I think my favorite was "One of the Smallest." I've reread this one many, many times already.

A creative word master...unusually sharp for today's elder generation of poets.

Really lovely poems. He read one for me when I bought the book a few years ago at a book fair in Miami.
