Breaking the Voodoo: Poetry and Fiction

Rate this book
Poetry. The title poem is "an evolving poem on all things global, social & political" and has been recorded by the author and his Magic Poetry Band. The other nine poems in this chapbook celebrate Rock 'N' Roll, the memory of a grandfather who worked assembly lines, and the students who died during the Kent State May 4 demonstrations. "I better think about this./ Something is happening/ To me because/ Something is rattling/ Inside of me/ To move my spirit up/ Through the top/ Of my bald head, / And it's hot / It's like a volcano burning/ Somewhere between my soul/ And my pancreas/ And I gotta ride it/ Up through my stomach/ Past my emotions/ Quick / Light some incense/ Place it on the altar of my shoulder./ Fan the flames./ This might take a while" - "Breaking the Voodoo.

Ah.. where to begin. "Breaking the Voodoo" is a collection of 10 poems published by Adastra Press in 2001.

I could leave my comments to " I wish I could write like him" but that would be a bit of a cop out and not much of a review. But that is in fact how I felt when I read the poems. "Breaking the Voodoo" is the signature poem in the chapbook and it is the strongest piece in the book. A rousing social/political poem that is a poetic exorcism of sorts. Topical and visual.... social commentary of the day... both serious and ironic in tone.
The other poems dabble in other topics close to home for the writer.. Jazz, rock and roll, family, revolution... labor. A nice variety of Liebler's work.

I liked everything... even the short pieces selected are strong and thoughtful. Masterful.

Like another friend and poet I know Liebler is fond of wordplay in his work. He uses it with skill and intent here.

Anyway, it's highly recommended if you can get your hands on a copy.
