A good way to count to 10. You start from one each page so that you have repetition and practice with numbers. Colourful and fun pictures. Plus, you can try to make the voice of the Count as you read.

Cute and silly, with an opportunity to do a fun voice while reading aloud!

This is a Golden Shape Book. It is designed to be read by beginning readers, and so the wording is simple, the book is durable, the pages are easily turned, and there is heavy reliance on pictures, which are often more interesting than the words.

I understand the sacrifices that have to be made for this sort of thing, but they unfortunately don't allow for enough of the anarchic ad-libs of the recently lost (and much lamented) Jerry Nelson. I miss things like the Count counting backward in Romansh, or singing a paean to 'eight balls of fur' (ala Jerry Lee Lewis) or rebuking an unreflective looking-glass by exclaiming "Bah! You are a terrible mirror! No reflection you, of course."

Other children's books do capture some of these elements, so it's not impossible to incorporate them. Most especially, I miss the Count finishing a count by laughing maniacally to the tune of thunder and lightning--difficult to draw, no doubt, but not impossible.
