Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was a writer and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.
Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.
Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens's creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of saccharine sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.
On 8 June 1870, Dickens suffered another stroke at his home after a full day's work on Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness, and the next day he died at Gad's Hill Place. Contrary to his wish to be buried at Rochester Cathedral "in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the time of the funeral reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world." His last words were: "On the ground", in response to his sister-in-law Georgina's request that he lie down.
A glorious collection of Christmas stories, poems, and carols, with brief author bios and a history of each story. A perfect holiday gift, and a splendid resource you can use throughout the year to experience Christmas cheer!
A Classic Christmas Treasury includes short stories, poems and even some Christmas Carols. Of course there are some well know stories: Christmas Carol, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (poem), The Gift of the Magi and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, but also some that I had never heard of before. After each story there is an about the author section and the history of what was happening in the world or in publishing at that time. I can't believe I have never read The Nutcracker, only seen the cartoon and the ballet. It is a good story and I am glad I finally read it. I read the ebook, so the description of the hard cover with embossed pages and gold leaf, was lost on me. I think I missed the illustrations that have been published in many of the books of these stories, which was why I only gave it 5 stars. If you are looking for a book that contains many wonderful stories of Christmas in one volume, this just might be the book for you.
A lovely Christmas collection of stories conveying the spirit and deeper meaning of Christmas. A book that continues to give.
A selection box without a fudge bar. A tub of chocolates without an orange cream.
A Classic Christmas Treasury is full of familiar ones we would expect and a few interesting additions that will melt and break your heart.
I love Christmastime, and it was a pure delight to be immersed into the season over and over again.
Joy to the world begins here. Gather round the piano and bang out those notes of the tunes included among the short stories.
So good to read Dicken’s A Christmas Carol as well as other “classics” you might expect. The Nutcracker was a story I knew better through the ballet and the story was quite new and a joy from start to finish.
The Fir Tree by Hans Christian Andersen was familiar but like all of these stories so pleased to re-read and reflect. But the less known authors added to my experience and “The Boy with the Box made the collection extra special to me and this short story will live long in my memory.
The book has such a delightful collection of Christmas tales, Christmas Carols, and poems. They take us back to the magical time. They are certain to get the reader in festive mood. I loved rereading A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker and the mouse. I loved the other tales and poems too including The First Noel, ‘Twas the night before christmas, The little Piccola, The Fir Tree and The boy with the box. The other tales are good too. The tales have focused on Christmas Spirit, Sacrifice, love, Birth of Jesus, exchanging gifts and many more values.
This is a Treasury of true Classic Christmas stories. Almost a third of the book is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Other popular stories include The Grift of the Magi, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, The Fir Tree, and Twas the Night Before Christmas. Carols are also included to be played on a piano. I was familiar with everything except a story called Bits by Helen G. Ricks who is an African American writer. This is the kind of book to be pulled out and read from every years. I liked getting the brief notes about the authors as well. About the only thing that could have made this book better would be adding some illustrations. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Rock Point for the temporary ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley and Rock Point for the advanced copy of this title in return for an honest review.
If you've seen any of my reviews before on any platform, you'll know how much of a Christmas nut I am, and this extends to Christmas books (at time of writing, I have 32 copies of A Christmas Carol). And everything about this just screamed joy. The cover, the authors, the stories chosen. It was definitely my happy place. Even more when I read it on a warm July evening. There's something quite naughty about festive activities in the summer, and as someone who despises hot weather, I am here for it!
And the cover is gorgeous! I know I've been sent an advanced digital copy - which I am very grateful for - I will have to buy myself a physical copy once it's released as I think it's the kind of book you need on the shelf, as it's just really beautiful and warming and cosy, and would make a great festive present.
As well as the already mentioned stories in the synopsis, we also have:
- The First Noel - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - Deck the Hall - Up on the Housetop - Jolly Old Saint Nicholas - The Boy With the Box
That makes 16 in all. It's a mixture of songs and carols, short stories, poems, novellas, and longer, fairytales, things I love and thing's I'm only just reading. Even for a Christmas fan like me, I wasn't aware of some of them and so it's a great introduction to new and old readers alike.
It also gave me an excuse to reread A Christmas Carol, not that I need an excuse - I usually try to read it several times a year.
Full of warmth and charm and hope and joy - this would be the perfect addition to anyone's festive celebrations.
When you love all the classics of Christmas stories, you know you need this collection! The nostalgia, the quintessential Christmas stories and the utmost classics are collected in this edition. Let yourself be a child again; believe in the magic of Christmas. For me, there was a return to well-known stories, such as A Christmas Carol, and then some others that I did not know as well, such as Little Piccola. Each story includes the original content as well as information about the author and a bit of history. Appropriate for all ages and all lovers of all Christmas stories. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
A nice collection of classic favorites and not so famous Christmas stories. I enjoyed reading them all. I wish there was some illustrations to make the book more welcome and inviting for younger children and I found the story order a bit odd. For exampls, starting of with Dickens can be great but it is a longer story and may have some stop reading before they find the other shorter stories. I also found many were a little depressing in tond , not the usual jovial tales we typically enjoy during the season but ones that offer the reader conteplation as an ending reward. If you like to read traditional Christmas stories and don't already own the ones in this book, it would be a nice addition to your home library.
The book of course contains Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol, which is probably my favorite of the bunch and also I think the longest entry in the anthology, but it also includes a variety of other short stories, poems, and even a handful of songs, complete with sheet music for simple arrangements.
A few of the stories were new to me but most are, as the title suggests, old classics with which I was already familiar. However, though I’d already read the bulk of the tales included in the book, I was pleased with the selections and the lot is attractively presented in a nice little hardcover, so if you’re looking for some holiday classics this Christmas season, I think you’d do well with this collection.
This was a very nice anthology of Christmas stories, poems and carols. It's always lovely to see the traditional tales we know so well, such as A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas, but it's also very nice to see some that are less familiar and makes it worth buying or borrowing for anyone who loves Christmas. I also really enjoyed having the carols included - I personally don't read music but it would be especially lovely for anyone who could play them as well as read the stories. A lovely book. Thanks to NetGalley for the copy in return for an honest review #AClassicChristmasTreasury #NetGalley
Drawn by its beautiful festive cover, I was even more curious when I saw that this Christmas book contained more than the usual suspects. Of course, you'll find A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker, but more interestingly, there are tales I had never read before, but also music scores of timeless Christmas carols, and that makes this book stand out in the crowd of Christmas anthologies.
However, I would much prefer to leaf through it as a paper format, because as a digital book, it wasn't super comfortable to read.
Such a perfect collection of Christmas stories! Imbued with sheet music for classic Christmas Carols put this over the top for me. At the end of each story is an About the Author and A Bit of History which was a nice addition. All stories most of us have read and some we maybe haven’t but should! Coming out at the perfect time for either your own collection to bring a little Christmas to your spirit or as a gift for a friend. Thank you NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for my honest review. I loved it!
This collection of Carols, poems and unabridged Christmas stories is reasonably priced (19.99 U.S.) and would make a lovely gift. Inside are such classics as A Christmas Carol, The Gift of the Magi, and Twas The Night Before Christmas, among many others. There is also the sheet music for a number of well known songs. All in all, a nice collection that would offer some nice reading time for the whole family.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
I grew up with various "treasuries" and had thought they'd gone the way of the dodo bird when I came across this one. I adore that it has short stories, novels, and songs all bound up into one volume for easy perusing throughout the season. There are the classics we all know and includes a few that I hadn't picked up before. Slap on this gorgeous cover and you have a perfect addition to any Christmas collection.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
I pulled this book from the library because I wanted to read a copy of A Christmas Carol, but it included a few Christmas short stories I’ve never read before from other little memorized authors (purposefully including a few lesser known and marginalized authors). I think my favorite was the closing “the Boy with the Box” a story I’ve never read, but a perfect reminder of the joy of gift giving. Coupled with a Christmas carol, and the gift of the Magi, and interspersed with carol sheet music, a jolly dose of Christmas spirit!
A Classic Christmas Treasury is a wonderful anthology of classic Christmas stories, poems, carols, and author information. A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite classic Christmas tales and I really enjoyed reading the others as well. This book would make a lovely Christmas gift for all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point, Rock Point for allowing me to be an early reader. All opinions are my own.
Who doesn’t enjoy a classic Christmas treasury? I love Christmas and all the fun nostalgia and traditions surrounding it, so giving this book an opportunity was a given! We like to remember the try reason for the season, but some fun, harmless reads such as this one keep the spirit flowing strong all season long! Definitely give this sweet collection a shot and have your heart filled with a little joy this Christmas. 🎄❤️🎁
Lovely compilation of various Christmas elements including stories, poems, and sheet music. Well balanced with shorter poems and content between the longer work. Being able to jump to various chapters on a kindle or printed version to reference the pieces and having all of these in one place will make this a lovely addition to a home library. Thank you to the publisher for providing this ARC for me to read and review.
This book cover is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! In this book you get a bunch of Christmas stories to read throughout the month of December. You also get some sheet music in there to sing along with. This is a beautiful collection and one I most definitely need with some of my absolute favorite holiday stories. You also get little notes about the authors of the stories and these little tidbits of history. Absolutely magical.
A Classic Christmas Treasury is a collectible treasury of stories, poems and carols including Twas the Night Before Christmas, Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Hans Christian Anderson.
I read this book as an ARC ebook but the physical book is supposed to be beautiful especially based on the cover. It would be a treasure to own a book like this and to pass on to others to cherish
A wonderful book filled with some classic Christmas stories and Christmas carols to sing. Several of these stories were well known to me, but there were many that I had not read before. I liked that the stories were followed by a blurb about the author and a history of the time that the story was written. The history gives a perspective to the author's mindset and the story's moral and impact. I enjoyed revisiting the classics and reading the new to me stories. A nice Christmas book.
If you are the type of person who keeps a family library, then you definitely need this classic collection of Christmas stories. You will pull it out year after year to read THE CHRISTMAS CAROL or perhaps THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE KING before watching a move/television version or attending a live performance for the first time. This is a book that can be enjoyed across generations and would even make a great gift for the readers in your life.
This is a lovely collection of Christmas stories, poems, and songs. It includes classics from Dickens and ETA Hoffman among others. It's a lovely compilation to remind you of the true spirit of Christmas.
A wonderful collection of Christmas stories, carols, history, and poems, some well known, and some not so. Not this book inbues the magic and wonderfulness that only comes at Christmas.
