I moved to Anchorage recently and I came across Wintermoot along with Chickaloonies at the Anchorage Museum. I wanted to learn more about what it meant to live up here from some of the area’s original inhabitants so coming across these was the perfect opportunity.

Wintermoot definitely comes off with the vibe that I’d need to reread it a couple times to understand what was going on. Maybe now that I think about it about it that is meant to be intentional and I’m never supposed to get a perfect grasp on what is happening. I think this is added on by the fact there is the added level of AR. With little exposition and such complex world building it feels like you’re jumping in the deep end. I can see how that is intentional but I do think it made the process of reading it a little more disorientating.

The characters themselves I think are what seem the coolest and I love the concept of using the previously proposed domed cities. Anthrome, Aréte, and Aqpik are stand outs for me. I also love the way powers work in this world in which they can be activated but also disappear.

I’m considering moving on to the next volume but I might also just wait for the 8th volume to be released so I can read it in a 4 volume copy like this one but we’ll see.

Honestly I don't know what a lot of that was, but it was a lot of fun and I'll probably read it again.

Book #19

The First 5 - I'm actually reading Book Six, Socialists and Pioneers, the museum edition. I received a copy when Nathan Shafer was at the Anchorage Museum for the opening of the comic book exhibit. I'm drawn into this book because it is immediately obvious Shafer knows a ton about history and Alaska. The first page about Hardwater and the Knik Quartermaster is brilliant.

The Second 10 - There is so much going on with this series. The understanding of Alaska cultures intersecting really makes it for me.
