Don't just fear what you're hiding from, fear what you're hiding with. Cassie's night of babysitting goes to hell when bombs explode in the distance, planes fly overhead at low altitudes, and alerts on her phone tell her to seek shelter. Luckily, the boy she babysits tells her his father has a bunker in the yard. When they make their way to this underground shelter, they soon discover they aren't alone. Something is living in the bunker, lurking in the walls, and it's hungry.
What started as a simple night of babysitting, will descend into a psychological and claustrophobic nightmare Cassie couldn't have prepared for.
Gage Greenwood is the best-selling author of the Winter's Myths Saga, and Bunker Dogs. He's a proud member of the Horror Writers Association and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers association. He's been an actor, comedian, podcaster, and even the Vice President of an escape room company. Since childhood, he's been a big fan of comic books, horror movies, and depressing music that fills him with existential dread. He lives in New England with his girlfriend and son, and he spends his time writing, hiking, and decorating for various holidays
Doctors throw chemicals at mental health problems like vampires throw black bile and dark smoke ecdysone. At least that’s what I got out of this book. Oh, and white wolves are demonically fierce.
The Good… The premise is bonkers, but captivating. I was immediately hooked and wanting more. The creatures are terrifying and vividly gruesome. The writing is excellent.
The Less Good… I liked where I thought it was going more than where it actually went. I was hooked immediately and hungrily devoured the first half, but that second half threw me for a loop. To be honest, I could have done without that demon plot, and I could have used more information on the whole apocalypse thing. That seems pretty important to know about.
The Themes… Overmedication and not allowing one’s true inner self emerge, and the loneliness that brings with it.
The Characters… Cassie was a great, fearless protagonist. Jake was a cardboard cutout of a kid. The creatures stole the show. No one else mattered.
Okay so the pros: •short chapters •fast paced •Taking Back Sunday mentioned in the first couple pages •vampires •demon possession •apocalyptic end of world energy
Cons: •I read it in a couple hours and I wish it had lasted forever because I LOVED IT!!
This one is really really special. I’m not one to write detailed reviews - or any review lately cause I suck and am busy as hell - but THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! It’s 100% going to make it into my top 5 of horror books this year.
If you’re into end of world-bunker hiding-vampire assholes-demons fuckin around and possessing your main character, then you NEED to pick this one up. Go preorder it NOW and set a reminder in your calendar, because this book goes HARD!
Thank you so much to Gage for sending me an early copy! I had so much fun with this one! 🖤

”Don’t just fear what you’re hiding from, fear what you’re hiding with.”
Gage Greenwood has done it again.
Bunker Dogs is a genre-bending horror story that carries the weight of grief. It’s an apocalyptic take that not only speaks on the calamities of the world, but the catastrophes that have wreaked havoc on the main character’s life.
Cassie is a college student dealing with the difficulties of life. To make ends meet, she babysits the son of an affluent family.
But on this particular evening of babysitting, things are much different.
Bombs begin to go off in the distance, planes are flying at low altitudes, and Cassie’s phone is alerting her to seek shelter immediately.
Is this the beginning of the end of the world?
Yet miraculously, the young boy she babysits tells her there is a hidden bunker in the family’s backyard.
But the bunker houses a darkness that will swiftly change the trajectory of the story.
Something sinister is lurking below ground, and there is something quite ominous about Cassie. All becomes clear as the struggle for survival reveals an incredible character study through the claustrophobic lens of the bunker.
Filled with heart wrenching flashbacks, thrilling twists, and a plot that keeps you on your toes— Bunker Dogs is a novel that will emotionally drag you back and forth.
Grief and fear are two emotions that walk the same path, hand in hand. Gage Greenwood effortlessly ties both together in this book, creating the ultimate tale of self-exploration— and simultaneously offering the reader something horrific and a bit gory.
”The horrors persist, but so do I.” is a quote I couldn’t stop thinking about while reading this story. Cassie is a flawed character who eventually finds her redemption. A piece of claustrophobic, terror ridden, single-setting writing ultimately turns into a tale of restored freedom.
”Life exists because of flaws, because of suffering. Because of pain and anger, and a deep desire to survive. Your genes are nothing without alleles. Mutations. Mistakes.”
How beautiful.
Bunker Dogs spoke to me in such a unique and indescribable way. I will always recommend a Greenwood book to anyone that wants to read horror with a heart. Gage has this knack you can’t put your finger on, and that’s a writer whose work you keep in your arsenal. An absolute ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ star read.
BUNKER DOGS [2024] By Gage Greenwood My Review 5.0 Stars
“Don’t just FEAR what you’re HIDING from. FEAR what You’re Hiding with.”
“Bunker Dogs” released this year was one of the two GROUP READ AUTHOR INVITES that I enjoy as part of my membership with Horror Aficionados. I will acknowledge that I may have benefitted from not reading the genre designations. I really loved reading this one. BTW is that Cover Art great or what?
So, okay, the teenage protagonist is introduced first and the reader immediately knows that the girl has a screw loose. Cassie is called for a last-minute baby-sitting gig, nice little boy, great house and gravy assignment. Cassie meets the parents pretty much racing out of the driveway, and then thing so to hell in a handbasket quickly. Cassie sees and her eardrums assaulted by a low flying plane. The boy does not think that happens around his house. Shortly they are under assault with gunfire and more planes overhead. Fortunately, the boy knows that there is a bunker for emergencies and the child and his babysitter Cassie barely make it underground and throw the seal to the heavy door before a blast pulverizes everything around them to include the people guns and the landscape.
Our flawed protagonist Cassie and her charge hardly have time to be scared before they learn that not only has the world likely ended but there are genuinely frightening inhuman predators locked in the bunker with them. I was blown away, namely straight into pure horror with the speed of a gun blast. Cassie is an enigma, and I found her to be a fascinating challenge to figure out her psych pathology. I found this to be an original, scary as hell, riveting read.
The backstory of the teenager Cassie is presented throughout the novel in dedicated chapters designated numerically with an identifying caption and Cassie’s age when applicable. These interspersed information dumps were perfectly executed to parse out Cassie’s story amidst the background of Earth’s destruction and the current events to include Cassie’s confrontation with a hostile pack of inhuman monsters.
By the time the climax arrived, and the gory showdown was at hand the reader knew the score. It was a surprise, and I like to think I am hardly ever not even in the ballpark. The ending was bloody, gory, action-packed and ultimately sad. Was there any hope at the end of the battle to give Cassie hope?
Terrific extreme horror tale with strong characterization of the protagonist, hellacious monsters, and plenty of blood and tears. I maintained hope until the end…
Highly recommended short work from a new voice in terror.
The early hype on this book is legit. It’s not even June yet, but I can already tell you this will finish the year in my top 3 reads. I loved everything about it. The characters, the setting, the combination of multiple horrors/tropes that meshed together perfectly. I went in blind just understanding a very basic premise of the book, but I was greatly rewarded for not knowing much beyond the fact that the protagonist spends time trapped in a bunker with something evil. Anyone who loved Winter’s Myths/Legacy but wanted to see Gage write pure horror, here you go. This book will not disappoint you
This was just okay. I didn't really know what to expect when I went into it, but it's safe to say this didn't blow my world away (pun not intended). I'm very into bunker/end of the world stories, so I'm sad I couldn't like this more.
This is a very fast-paced story with near non-stop action, and the action scenes are pretty much the only reason why this gets 2 stars instead of 1. Judging from the bio, I thought I'd either absolutely eat this up or it would be lacking depth due to too many things happening. It was definitely the latter.
I wasn't a fan of the writing style. I can't necessarily put my finger on it, but it's almost too cheesy? Everything with The White Wolf and Cassie seemed so cliche, and the whole positive personal strength message just made me feel bleh. I also just didn't like Cassie in general. She obviously has been through a lot, but she's just very unlikable. In a way, I felt TOO much (I would say what, but I don't know if it's spoilers or not) had happened to her in order to provide a deeper backstory, but it sorta felt disingenuous and just trying to pile it on. I think that's my overall problem, though; too much is piled on to make an effect, but it doesn't. The take on vampires was interesting, and I'm always for non-sexualized vampires, but I wish we got more about them here besides being the opponent in the fight scenes. We do get some information about them, but it still felt like not enough. I also felt the whole nuclear war(?) side got neglected. Yeah sure, there isn't much you can do while in a bunker, especially one filled with vampires, but it just felt thrown to the wind. I suppose I was hoping for a more realistic approach to this instead of a mystical one.
Overall, it was a fast read that had an interesting mix of topics but unfortunately didn't bode well with me.
Don't fear what you're hiding from, fear what you're hiding with.
Are you ready?
I can't even begin to describe how amazing this book is. It's heartbreaking and horrific, but at its core this is a love story. A story about parental love and the love we share with the world and ourselves. Did I cry at the end? Yes I did. Was I ready? Not even close!
Gage Greenwood is a talent to watch for sure. No purple prose required, he tells the story exactly how it wanted to be told in all of its beautiful simplicity. I adored Cassie and if there's not going to be a sequel then we riot!!
With so many great writers in the community, I try to read as many as possible, which means even when I find an author I like, it usually takes me a while to circle back around to their other books. Well, ever since I first read Winter’s Myths, I knew Gage had something special. I guess that’s why he’s the only author in the history of the world that I’ve read everything they’ve published (Excluding authors with one release).
When I first heard about Bunker Dogs back when it was on Kindle Vella, I knew this one would be right up my alley. Bunker Dogs keeps the post-apocalyptic theme of his Winter’s Myths series, but ditches the light-hearted humor allowing for a much darker tone. Even the end of the world takes a back seat to the monsters lurking in the shadows.
Often when books try to mix too many themes and subgenres, it can feel clunky and less believable, but Gage always does a great job of making the pieces fit together in a seamless way.
Check this one if you’re looking for a claustrophobic, post-apocalyptic, creature feature that will leave you wondering if its better to die with the rest of the world than be one of the “survivors”.
Cassie, a hardworking college student, forgoes a night of partying with her roommate to babysit James, the pre-teen son of the therapist she used to see when she was a child. That night, all things go to hell in a fury of gunfire, explosions and jets flying overhead. In what appears to be the start of WWIII, the two need a safe place to go, and fast. Luckily, James reveals his parents have a bunker in the backyard. The bunker may have got them out of harm’s way from the chaos going on above ground, but down in the shadows and recesses of the subterranean refuge awaits an evil more terrifying than anything Cassie could ever imagine.
With Bunker Dogs, Gage Greenwood does an admirable job of giving us an entertaining mix of demonic possession, vampires and psychological horror all under the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic setting. You would think it would be hard to juggle all of those horrific elements in only 265 page without dropping a ball or two. I’ve got to hand it to Greenwood - he pulls it off pretty damn well. A perfect example is of his handling of Cassie. I ran the gamut of emotions with her. At first, I liked her. Then, I didn’t. Finally, he made me understand her, and I was back where I started, but with a complete range of feelings towards her. That’s a three-dimensional character, what every writer strives for, but so many don’t quite get there.
Gage’s writing style is fluid and smooth. He has an interesting take on vampires and demons, with a couple of different wrinkles that I appreciated. I’ve seen reviews that lamented there wasn’t more exploring of the fallout from the nuclear war on the surface. Not me. The fear of radiation provided the isolation of Cassie and James by trapping them inside the bunker. It was another clever piece Greenwood used to keep the story in its own lane. And, again, I appreciated it.
All in all, a great tale that should rank in my top 3 of Books of Horror’s Indie Brawl.
This was a book where I really liked the beginning and end, but the middle really wasn’t my cup of tea.
I just wish the execution was a bit different and there was a bit more suspense. I thought it was gonna be an apocalyptic cat and mouse but it was more girl against mustache twirly villains with a case of hidden identity.
Like the villain was right there immediately. No build up or atmosphere.
I also wish the type of creature the villains were were done differently. They were a little cringe. Especially their voice lines.
But I really liked other aspects, like the white wolf and seeing the MCs hidden and suppressed memories. I think the setting was interesting and both the beginning and end were so ominous.
Great bones of a story but the guts could use some work.
TW/CW: suicide, war, nuclear weapons, among other things.
Cassie is babysitting James and looking forward to a quiet evening to study. Suddenly her peaceful night is shattered by bombs exploding, shots fired and an emergency message telling her to find shelter. As chaos erupts around them the boy mentions his parents have a bunker in the garden, seems like an ideal solution. But soon they realise they are not the only ones locked underground and the bunker is not the safe haven they had hoped for.
Wow! This is a full throttle nightmare ride into a brutal gore soaked realm. There are only a few things that I find unsettling to read and one of them is a prominent scene in this book, creepy as hell and written brilliantly, the shiver felt so good!
This is a charnel house of depravity exposing humanity’s scar tissue in glorious technicolour. It is horror but with a deeply bleeding psychological vein running all through it, it is thought provoking and disturbing.
Go in blind but be warned this is a gut wrenching tale that screams in your face. It is a story of pure terror and easily soars to one of my top reads of this year! Incredible!
I really don't know what to say. I truly enjoyed Gage's other works, but as of right now, this is my favorite. Dystopian vampire story with a clausterphobic twist. Being trapped in an underground bunker while the world is destroyed outside...pretty damned bad. Not knowing that there are 'things' in the bunker with you, wanting to kill you...absolutely terrifying. Gage weaves though the story with ease as he keeps the reader frightened at what is coming from around the next corner. Basically, this is like being locked in on the wrong side of a panic room. Highly recommended reading.
This book was absolutely brilliant. I had it all read in one sitting. I was expecting as much because I’ve read another of his books and it was amazing so I almost knew this one would be as well, but it was beyond what I was expecting. It blew my mind, and I bloody loved it. ♥️
6.7/10 the beginning was really good the build up at the end was decent but the actual ending I found was a little too vague for me personally and I found the flashbacks interrupted the flow off the tense parts off the book. One big plot point the reason they went into the bunker in the first place was never expanded on or made clear why it happened beyond the characters speculating but I guess it didnt really need too.
But I enjoyed the read, the tension was built well especially at the end I liked the concept, I thought the first chapter was put together really well it was a really strong start. I liked the main character and finally had some decent twists, all in all was a solid enjoyable book. 👍
I enjoyed every minute of this story, and it was so cool to see some “Winter’s Myths” references amongst the pages as well.
This is a wonderful, crazy story about a young woman and her journey to become her authentic self… let’s just say it involves the end of the world and some supernatural beings. 😂
There were some absolutely terrifying moments, especially when Cassie was trying to get in/out of the bunker kitchen and when she got stuck in the tunnel!! Ugh no offence but I would NEVER even let her babysit a pet rock let alone a child haha.
I don’t know where the author gets these fantastical ideas from, but keep them coming!!!
I had so much anxiety reading this. It was tense, action-packed, and super fast-paced. I could hardly put it down. I love everything I've read from Gage and this was no exception. He put a unique twist on creatures that are frequently written about (which I won't spoil here, because I did not expect what it was going into the book.) I found Cassie to be relatable in many ways and the messaging in the book felt timely for me personally. I can only hope that Gage is planning a sequel to this! I also loved the little easter egg references to his other work.
When I received an ARC of Bunker Dogs I had to give myself a pep talk because I have beyond loved everything Gage Greenwood has written. Grackles on the Feeder is one of my favourite short stories of all time and I was so thoroughly captivated by the characters in Winter’s Myths that I didn’t think Bunker Dogs would hold up. I JUST finished it and I have chills. Literal chills. If you are considering reading this book you only have one question to ask yourself - are you ready?
Gage does it again!! Bunker Dogs is a claustrophobic, harrowing story with layers of horror goodness. The way the story is fully unveiled is awesome and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was grossed out and stressed in equal measure which for me is a sign of a fantastic book! If you’re a fan of end of the world stories, check this one out. It promises to delight with bonus elements of the paranormal and deeply human (and non human) struggles on display.
Finally emerging from the bunker and I can say it’s an aptly named book. Gage Greenwood takes you deeper and deeper and you never know where it’s going to go next. Unpredictable and endlessly fascinating. 👍👍
This was my first read by Gage and had heard great things about this one. Well they were all true, this book is just so well written you won't want to buy it done. Great story line, great characters with twists and turns to keep you guessing what will happen next.
Gage did it again! He knows how to punch you right in the feels and then leaves you begging him to keep swinging.
This book had my anxiety through the roof. It’s the kind of story you absolutely can’t put down because you HAVE to know what’s going to happen next. It’s wild how you find your feelings about various characters evolving as you learn more. There’s a slight chance I even shed a few tears at a couple of parts…
And the last two words of the book… holy ravioli. My mouth dropped because I was 100% not ready. This tale is one of sheer perfection that I will read and recommend time and time again.
This was a hell of a rollercoaster ride, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chapters, the memories, everything melded together seamlessly.
Cassie is a college student who has had a hard life. She goes to babysit at her regular babysitting gig. At some point during the evening, a terrifying message comes across her phone. Is the world ending? James, the kiddo she's sitting tells her of a great place to hide. Instead of safety, they find that they're stuck in their hiding place with something else, something inhuman. As it turns out, there are more than one. Can Cassie keep both herself and James safe? You'll have to read it to find out.
5☆☆☆☆☆ Just when I thought Gage couldn't get any better.... here comes Bunker Dogs. This is an absolute spell binding, horrifying thriller. The characters are captivating and horrifying at the same time. Cassie is thrust into a bunker when the world around her is starting to fall. But what she doesn't know is the real hell....is in the bunker with her. What's creeping in the halls and lurking in the walls... will scare the crap out of ya. This is definitely one of those books that is "unputdownable."
Don't just fear what you're hiding from. Fear what you're hiding with.
Cassie says, "here Buffy, hold my beer". (That’s not in the book but it could be.) Right from the get go, this is as much of a psychological roller coaster as it is a physical one. Intriguing, and intense, a story that plunges you into the darkness, swirls you around and leaves you spent. Excellent storytelling. Nothing at all like I thought it would be. The characters, setting and pictures painted in your mind are grotesquely vivid. Wow, just wow.
There's so much going on in this book it's sometimes hard to keep up. Lots of surprises, twists and turns. It's a different kind of horror story with many elements, some human and some inhuman. A dark adventure to ponder but fun, as well.
Because there was so much hype about this one, I knew I would read it at some point. I decided to not read any of the reviews or synopsis and I went in blind. I tend to often wonder why heavily hyped books get the praise as they often don't work for me but this one was superb. Read it in 3 days, which is quick for me. Great story line, well written. It has demons and vampires and a great central character. Definitely worth picking up.
The man couldn’t miss if he wanted too! This story was awesome! Not at all what I was expecting but it exactly what I needed! The whole build up was thrilling and kept me engaged the whole time. I don’t know if there is going to be a second one but I honestly feel like there should be cause I want more white wolf! Definitely check this out ASAP!!
