The Norton Introduction to the Short Novel contains short novels from Europe and the Americas, ranging in length from 15,000 to 70,000 words. An introduction discusses the short novel as a form and as a reading experience, and a headnote to each novel briefly discusses the life and work of the author. The novels are carefully footnoted, providing necessary information but never venturing upon interpretation. An afterword to each novel raises questions and illuminates ways to open further discussion.
A good collection of novellas. Any collection as diverse as this one deserves to read and enjoyed for years. Another delightful feature of this book are the commentaries before and after each short novel. This anthology should be on my bookshelves.
