Hideaway: A Novel

Rate this book
Maggie West is perfectly content with her life as a single, twenty-five-year-old homebody extraordinaire. But when her best friend asks her to bring a plus-one to her wedding, Maggie reluctantly agrees to go on a series of (increasingly disastrous) blind dates. Even worse, the weeks before the wedding bring her in constant company with Jack, the wedding’s dour, disapproving best man. He has a knack for showing up at her worst moments and seeing her all too clearly—even the parts of her she’s spent years hiding.

When a panic attack at work forces Jack to take a month-long sabbatical, he drives across the country to stay with his oldest friend. As exhausted and threadbare as he feels, though, the prospect of a month off is as daunting as it is unwelcome—he has no interest in rehashing all the things that led to his breakdown. The presence of quirky, accident-prone Maggie—and her uncanny ability to shatter through his tight reserve—only further unsettles him.

But when a rogue protective instinct has Jack offering to help her, the tension between them shifts in the wake of an unsettling maybe all of their broken, hidden places are the very ones where they need each other the most.

Hideaway is such a wonderful Romcom with depth. I’ve said it so many times before but I really do love a book with Mental health reps. The book starts with an awkwardly hilarious fashion mishap. Then enters Jack to help, but things end up even more awkward.

I love how the book had Maggie and Jack start to become friends and get to know each others quirks. Also Jack had to rescue Maggie with some seriously bad dates, which made for some entertaining situations. Both Jack and Maggie had growth in the story but it was nice that they worked on themselves. It wasn’t them trying to fix each other.

This was a really sweet story! The meet cute was hilarious and I loved how the relationship between Maggie and Jack unfolds as they become friends and then lovers.

There were some great side characters and I enjoyed the humorous moments. I also appreciated how the “3rd act” (but really like the last part of the book) was handled. It was sweet and the perfect ending for the characters.

I have now found myself saying I am a hobbit who does not want to ever leave the comfort of her burrow. What have you done to me @bekahoverbeybooks 😅

This book was such a fun surprise! It started hilariously. Maggie and her bad luck made my day and made her and Jack’s meet cute P E R F E C T. I mean, does it get any better than “panty vigilante”? Nope, I don’t think so.

After the funny, we got a lot of sweet and romantic. We saw both of them come to terms with their current circumstances. And how they were going to prove not only others wrong, but themselves.

While the blind dates Maggie “forced” herself to go on weren’t really all that great, they were funny to watch, albeit she did not think so in the moment. I loved her determination and resilience, despite all life has thrown at her. And while her attitude was a bit cynical at times, it was very relatable. But what I loved most of all, was watching her tear down her walls with Jack and become a stronger woman.

I also adored Jack. He was adorable and super sweet. And definitely someone I would want in my corner. I loved how this journey to Raleigh brought him to who he really is and what it was he really wanted out of life. And watching him fight for that future was admirable.

I swooned for the cute moments between Maggie and Jack. I cried for her deepest hurts when she shared them with him. And I absolutely fell on the floor laughing at their first impressions of each other, and a few other moments in between.

If you are looking for a heartfelt but swoony and comedic story for your next read, I suggest you pick up Hideaway 🩷

I absolutely loved Hideaway! I connected so deeply with Maggie, she felt so real, like someone I could actually know (or be). Jack was total swoon material and honestly gave me all the green flags! The slow build to the best friend’s wedding made for such a fun and engaging plot, and the ending was perfection. It had everything I want in a romance: heart, humor, chemistry, and characters I didn’t want to let go of. Sigh…😌

If you need a feel good rom com, look no further! This one was super cute. I loved watching the romance blossom between jack and maggie. They both knew what they wanted and despite the hurt Maggie experienced with her dad. She was able to look past that and realize that not everyone will abandon her. Jack made her better and i enjoyed watching Maggie grow in her confidence and self esteem.

Writing and grammar was excellent, which was a nice surprise. Sooo much inner dialogue that I skipped 50% to get to the "big reveal" and understand why the FMC was so broken.

I'm not going to spoil it but I will say that it didn't come until 95% and by that point I had given up caring.

I really liked this book! It made me laugh (hello Panty Debacle!), it made me tear up (Maggie’s past), it made me feel butterfly-y (how Jack cared for her).

Will definitely read more by this author!

Quotes:

“Standing there in the kitchen, she looked like the kind of woman you blew through yellow lights to get home to after work. The kind you sweep off her feet for the sheer pleasure of holding her. The kind who makes you actually want a sabbatical because it would mean more time with her.”

“It’s okay if the world feels like too much, if it feels like you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. But if you need to run, run with me, Maggie. If you need to hide, don’t hide from me. Let me be your hideaway. As often as you like, for as long as you need, you can hide away with me.”

This was a really lovely read. There is plenty of humor to give it that Romcom feel but it also has some depth. The meet cute is so funny and Maggie’s internal monologues will be familiar to any overthinking introvert. The paintball date was also a very funny moment and I loved the time after with Jack caring for her bumps and bruises. I have never read a book that was set in a place that is so familiar to me but that added charm to this read and Bekah did a great job describing Raleigh’s places.

Grand gestures, humor, kisses in the rain and a lovely setting made for a great read. Jack needed a hideaway from the stresses of corporate America and Maggie needed a hideaway from the world that is sometimes just too much. It was a sweet story of watching them decide to hideaway together.

This book has so many relatable moments in it! I read it mostly in one sitting because I was traveling while I read, and I just felt so seen while I was reading it. It’s also hilarious, and I laughed so many times while reading!

Maggie is an introverted homebody, and I related to her in so many ways. Her character is beautifully written, and I felt for her and all she had been through when she was younger. I also thought she was really inspiring at how she was working to overcome certain things throughout the story, and I loved how Jack supported her through it all! Seeing her break down Jack’s walls in turn, and seeing how she helped him with things too was great! They are a wonderful couple, and I loved seeing their journey together throughout the story.

I ended up highlighting a bunch of lines; some because they made me feel seen, and many because they were downright hilarious! I laughed a lot over Maggie’s inner thoughts especially because they were written so well.

Bekah Overbey has a fantastic writing voice, and I am eagerly looking forward to more books by her! Readers who enjoy romcoms with depth will absolutely love this book, and I highly recommend it! It was an instant favorite for me when I read it, and I know I’ll be rereading it again in the future.

This was weird. Unique for sure. The characters were bumbling every which way and I definitely felt that the saying, “There’s someone for everyone” was very true here.

Hideaway is a funny and deeply touching story about two people who are coping with their lives but are not thriving. The book reminds us that we all need to be understood and to be needed. I enjoyed this book immensely!

I love the author’s writing style. It’s cozy and perfect for this story. It has funny, swoony, serious, tearful, and found family moments. It’s grumpy/sunshine done so well.

This is a clean book with only kisses.
