This is another endearing biography in the series of Little People, Big Dreams (4-7 years old), bringing a legendary figure who was passionate about animals and our surroundings.

Steve Irvin grew up in Australia, in family who loved animals. When he was eight, his family started a wildlife refuge. And when he was nine, he learned how to rescue a crocodile. From then on, he continued his passion for saving crocodiles.

He soon became Australia’s top “croc catcher,” and filming a documentary called “The Crocodile Hunter.” It became a popular show worldwide.

Steve’s enthusiasm for animals, especially crocodiles, comes through in this story and through illustrations. (The illustrations portraying little Steve are very cute). His story teaches that we belong to the planet as all other creatures and we should responsibly share the planet, rather than act as we own it.

In this wonderful biography presented with clear voice and examples, the “Little People” can learn about a man who did what he passionately cared for.

“He was nine when he tried to catch a crocodile by jumping on its back for the first time.”

Typical Aussie boy trick – not! Steve Irwin became a household name around the world. He came by his love for animals honestly.

“His mother was a nurse who dreamed of raising kangaroos, and his father was a plumber with a passion for reptiles.”

His parents moved the family to Queensland and opened Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park when Steve was eight. Steve used to pick up wounded animals on his way to school and then look after them at home. They protected snakes and crocodiles too. He’d go out with his father to find some that needed saving and relocating.

When he was older, he went out into the bush to save crocodiles on his own.

“He was so good at rescuing the most dangerous animals that he soon became Australia’s top 'croc catcher.'”

Later, when he was managing the park and demonstrating working with crocodiles for tourists, he spotted his future wife, Terri – love at first sight!

“Their honeymoon was one of a kind! They spent it rescuing and relocating crocodiles and filming a wildlife documentary called 'The Crocodile Hunter.' The show was so successful that they decided to turn it into a television series.”

I remember watching the first documentary and commenting that it would have been nice to hear an Aussie narrate. But I said it was smart for Terri to do it because, as well as being part of the family, she has a pleasant American accent that would be easy for Americans to understand.

I grew up in the States and know how many Americans have trouble with their own regional accents, let alone those from another country. Closed captions mean I can now enjoy many shows from Ireland and the UK that I would struggle with. But I digress.

“When the first episode aired … crikey!
It became a hit, not just in Australia but all over the world.”

“Crikey!” became a hit, too, and is often the first thing someone says when Steve’s name is mentioned.

He encourage a love of all animals, even those that terrify us, and he and Terri decided to grow their park into Australia Zoo, a place to protect and introduce all kinds of animals to the public.

“He turned it into one of the best zoos in the world—not just for the visitors but for the animals. And while the zoo expanded … so did the Irwin family!”

They began buying more land for conservation and founded Wildlife Warriors, a charity to protect the natural environment and the habitat of endangered animals around the world.

He has left a legacy possibly better than he could have dreamed of, although he dreamed pretty big. He is as big a household name today as he was when he died in 2006. I’m a fan of his work and am glad to see his name added to this collection of children’s biographies.

As always, there is a bit more detail at the end with four black and white photos, a couple of which I’ll share here.

I can’t help adding a glimpse of Australia Zoo as it is today.

“Conservation Shows: Crikey! Get up close and personal to our amazing animals and experience all the wildlife action at our daily shows.” https://www.australiazoo.com.au/exper...

Cute introduction to The Crocodile Hunter. Thanks to #NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Book for the copy for review of #SteveIrwin. [I trust they will correct the dates under the photos in my copy. 😊]

This is my favorite children's series. Only one has been a miss. Most of us grew up watching and knowing who Steve Irwin was. He did a lot of conservation efforts around the globe. I'm glad Bindi is continuing his work.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.

This is my first book in the Little People, Big Dreams Series, so I didn’t know what to expect. I got the book only for Steve Irwin, someone I considered a hero since I was a child.

The illustrations are vibrant and cute. They get the details right, be it Terri’s hairstyle or little Robert’s bald head. The book also has the iconic scene of Steve feeding the crocs (as a part of the weekly program for the audiences) at the Australia Zoo.

Apart from that, the content is bare minimum, or maybe it feels that way since I’ve watched countless episodes over the years (including the latest ones with Bindi and family). I also follow them on Instagram, so what I found in this book feels like a highly glossed version.

While I appreciate the care taken to avoid death in kiddo books, I think it should have been mentioned. This is nonfiction, after all. The teeny text (two paragraphs of summary) at the end doesn’t count. However, I do appreciate the pictures included with it.

To summarize, the book would work as the first step to introduce Steve Irwin to children. It doesn’t have much to say, though. I usually enjoy the publisher’s books, but maybe my expectations didn’t align with the series format.

Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Crikey, this is a great book!

Most of us have heard of this amazing, enthusiastic human decked out in khaki shorts and have been inspired by his drive to respect the planet. His legacy lives on.

Readers will learn about a little Australian boy who had a dream - Steve Irwin. He grew up on his family’s wildlife reserve and began saving crocodiles when he was just 9 years old! His love of animals earned him the nickname, “croc-catcher.”

I loved the backstory of how the successful TV series got started and how he met his wife. My niece and nephew enjoyed the vibrant photos and soon headed to the dress-up box to ‘play’ wildlife warriors. Message received, Steve Irwin.

His daughter Bindi tearly pleaded, “I don’t want Daddy’s passion to ever end.” This book heralds a new generation of wildlife warriors who will carry Steve Irwin’s passion for all living creatures.

The timeline, photos, illustrations, extra facts, and simple sentences will appeal to young readers.

I was gifted this copy by Quarto Publishing Group, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Steve Irwin is one of the newest editions to the Little People Big Dreams series and is well deserving of his spot in the series.
In this edition we learn about young Steve Irwin who grew up in a family who loved animals. When his family started a wildlife refuge and he rescued a crocodile his love and passion for saving these animals grew. When he was grown up he had become Australias best crocodile catcher and a documentary was made called 'The Crocodile Hunter' which was a hit all around the world.
I'm happy with how the book ended that it referenced his death as a tragic death and didn't go into how he died making it suitable for children and up to parents/carers whether to explain what happened to him (if they know).
The illustrations are fantastic at capturing in a fun way Steve's personality and passion for animals and really bring the book to life.

For a while I read so many of these that I needed a break, but considering my favourite one was the one about David Attenborough, I knew I'd want to read this one about Steve Irwin.

Though it feels a bit redundant to review them at this point, I always say the same.
Here it goes:

This series first has a short biography of the titular person, where the author manages to break heavy topics in to child-friendly chunks. In this case, illegal wildlife hunts and loss of habitat. At the end, we have a timeline with most important events in this persons life, and further reading suggestions.

The illustrations are beautiful and very colourful in this one. If I had a toddler in my life, this would be one I'd give them.

And now I'd like to re-watch a few episodes of Crocodile Hunter.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

I've read a ton of books from the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series, and usually they are smashing! However, I was left super disappointed with this book. I just don't feel like they did Steve Irwin justice. It didn't really say much - it felt very generic, and they didn't mention anything about his tragic accident of a death. I appreciate this is a children's book, but I still feel like it should have been included in some shape of form within the book.

Steve Irwin is one of those people that I grew up watching on TV. For those who don't know, he was an animal activist best known as "The Crocodile Hunter". There was a lot more to him than that. From his childhood, his family loved and tried to protect animals in their home area of Victoria, Australia. His parents, a nurse and plumber were passionate about animals, packed up and moved the family to Queensland when Steve was eight. They opened Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park, a wildlife refuge to protect crocodiles and other animals. He went with is dad to rescue crocodiles and eventually, began working on his own. His passion was to teach people about the animals, especially crocodiles, so they wouldn't be so eager to kill them. The story continues through his marriage to Terri, having children and his time making his documentary show, The Crocodile Hunter. The story ends with his desire that everyone, especially children, to love, protect and cherish wildlife. I enjoyed this book and learning about his youth, but had one issue. Crocodiles are dangerous and I would have liked more about the dangers so children don't think they are harmless. They also didn't mention how he was killed and I guess that might have been a bit too much for kids. Following his dreams, with the support of his parents and family helped him to become the man he always wanted to be. I like that his family is still following in his footsteps and promoting animal rights. Sonny Ross illustrates this story with whimsical and slightly quirky illustrations that add to the story and will definitely interest children.

I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

My mom and I were big fans of Steve Irwin and loved to watch his show. Haha, well, my mom was totally a fan. She was a superfan. So I just couldn’t resist this book in the amazing fun series (Little People Big Dreams) when I spotted it on Edelweiss. I had to figure out how to download it, because I haven’t used Edelweiss that much, I prefer Netgalley in its ease. But I did it, and then in August I had a fun time reading this one!

In this one we get to know all about Steve Irwin, or well, most of it. Haha, you cannot cram it all in a short book of course, but the main things are there. How he grew up with parents who love to save animals (even using their own camper/home to do so) and how he went on to do the same along with his adorable dog Sui. I loved seeing him grow up and get more into saving animals, helping out crocs, finding his wife and starting a family who also wanted to help out with his quest/dream. It was a very inspiring and sweet read and I really loved it. I knew all of the things already, but see them back in such a fun illustration style was a lot of fun. The illustrator really captured Steve Irwin as he was.

Bonus points to the fun cover!

The ending was a bit unexpected, I had expected at least a page or so about his death and what happens afterwards. I am guessing that in the empty space with the time line that is mentioned, but I think it is good to also mention that as an ending to the book, not everyone may read the timeline/care about that.

I would definitely recommend this book to all!

I love these books and have read many with my grandchildren and for myself.

I have found no fault with any title yet; they bring to the forefront incredible people who have life stories that need telling, who have achievements worth sharing, to inspire others, young and old.

Steve Irwin became a wildlife hero in my home with my young daughters growing up. How fitting then that he has a place in this wonderful series.

His message and legacy live on and the measure of the man is that he took his inspiration from his own parents and his family now continue his work and share his love for our world.

Beautifully illustrated with a colour palette that captures the themes and the enthusiasm of this man. The writing is clear and informative. With a summary at the end to assist adults and young people, with photos that show the humanity of the person around whom this book is written.

I also like the additional reading suggestions and encouragement to learn more beyond the pages of the book.

This is a great children's book, from the Little People, BIG DREAMS series, where we are shown the life of Steve Irwin, who was a great animal lover and a wildlife conservationist, who was famous for saving and helping animals. We are shown his life from when he was a little boy helping his parents to save crocodiles, until his death. He helped a lot of wildlife animals in his time, and he raised a lot of money for them too. Now his legacy lives on through his precious children.

The illustrations in the book are very nice and colourful, and the text is easy to read. I enjoyed reading this book, and I recommend it highly.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Steve Irwin is one of my top childhood hero’s and I was so excited to see this title come across! I had never heard of the “Little People, Dream Big” series. I’m so glad I have! I will recommend these books to everyone with kids.

The artwork is beautifully detailed. There is heart-warming information and statistical facts of Steve Irwins life in easy to digest bits for kids. I loved how this highlighted the influence that he had and continues to have in regards to wildlife conservation. So thankful I was able to discover these adorable children’s books!

My thanks to Quarto Group - Francis Lincoln Children’s Books for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘Steve Irwin’ by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Sonny Ross.

This is No. 104 in the critically acclaimed Little People, BIG DREAMS series of illustrated mini-biographies for readers aged 4-7. Each volume introduces children to the lives of public figures across a variety of fields, stressing how their childhood led to the fulfilment of their aspirations.

I was delighted to see that Australian environmentalist Steve Irwin was the latest subject in this delightful series as I have long admired him for his work with conservation and wildlife along with his continuing legacy.

Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara has a knack of distilling the essence of her subjects’ lives. Here the text stresses how Steve was inspired from a young age by his parents and likewise passed on his commitment to wildlife and nature to his own children, who have continued his work.

The last panel notes that Steve Irwin’s memory continues to inspire many throughout the world. This sensitive approach allows for parents to address Irwin’s death if their children raise the question. His death is also mentioned in the closing biographical timeline. There are also suggestions for further reading.

I found Manchester artist Sonny Ross’ artwork especially appealing. He captures Irwin’s positivity as well as depicts his beloved crocs in a number of natural settings. His use of colour was outstanding, conveying an upbeat mood.

I am always happy to recommend this charming series to parents, guardians, educators, and librarians as they provide an accessible introduction to biography and nonfiction to young readers.

Thanks to NetGalley and Lincoln Children’s Books (Quarto Publishing Group), I had the opportunity to read this cute little book in advance in exchange for an honest opinion.

The Little People, Big Dreams series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this Earth, no matter what difficulties they encountered in their lives. These stories are concise, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable. The language is straightforward and conversational, and it works very well for the younger reader and the elder. I think they are a brilliant and fantastic way to introduce little children to such important figures.

This little cute book here tells the story of Steve Irwin, the famous animal lover and wildlife conservationist. Since he was a little child, Steve spent his life caring for wild animals and doing anything in his power to protect them. He taught us to love these animals and how to help them. He was an eco-warrior, and his legacy will keep inspiring new generations.

I was really interested to read this addition to this popular book series about Steve Irwin and I think it will appeal to a lot of children. Featuring the signature series illustraions filling the pages, this is eye catching and helps young readers understand the content. I enjoyed finding out more about Steve's younger years and what got him into animals and protecting nature. I was surpised that this did not mention how Steve died, neither in the story or the extra details at the end as this is fairly important and that he died doing what he loved. Also I think his enduring legacy carried on by his daughter could have also been mentioned as this might lead children to finding out more about her.

So, first of all, this is a children's book. But since Steve Irwin was kind of a hero in my childhood and I loved watching his tv-show, I wanted to read this book. It has such beautiful artwork in it which perfectly fits the story. The story shows exactly the love and care Steve put into all the animals he cared for. It is ofcourse a short summary of his life, but for kids the perfect way to get to know more about him.

"And today, little Steve's memory keeps encouraging us to love, cherish, and protect wildlife. Because we don't own this planet, we belong to it, just like every living being we share it with."

Annoyingly I am still struggling with reading, so I thought I would choose to read a quick book about a man I remember watching on TV when I was growing up - Steve Irwin. I didn't realise that his parents had such a strong love of animals too, and that they set up what is now Australia Zoo. As somebody who cares deeply for animals, I felt like I could really connect to Steve and everything he did, and his enthusiasm truly makes me smile to think about. This book is a snippet of his joy and activism, that may encourage families to look up his shows and see the legacy that his family continues to uphold.

These books are excellent, they all have important messages and manage to communicate them to children without terrifying them. My daughters particular favourites have been Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks. This has references to conservation and caring for our world along with some gorgeous illustrations. Another great addition to the series.

Crikey! This book is a beaut!! I had so much fun reading through the life of the incredible wildlife warrior and my childhood hero, Steve Irwin.

I knew a lot about him already. I knew about his family, The Crocodile Hunter show, Australia Zoo, his incredible conservation work. But there was so much I didn't know!

I didn't realise his parents were the ones who originally opened Beerwah Reptile Park, which grew to become the beloved Australia Zoo we know and love today. Their love of all creatures and dedication to rescuing them was the beginning of Steve's wildlife warrior journey.

Steve started catching crocodiles by jumping their backs when he was nine. Nine!!!! Over the years he developed his techniques of safely and humanely catching crocs; techniques that are now used by crocodile experts all around the world! Amazing!

I was heartbroken the day I heard he was gone. But I was lucky enough to visit Australia Zoo last year, and it is clear that his legacy lives on! This book is a beautiful tribute to the Steve and everything he achieved. Perfect for children and adults alike, this books is brilliant and sums up the impact Steve had, and is still having, on the world.

"And today, Steve's memory keeps encouraging us to love, cherish and protect wildlife. Because we don't own this planet, we belong to it, just like every living being we share it with."

"Steve's memory keeps encouraging us to love, cherish, and protect wildlife."

I love this series so much and I can't wait to add Steve Irwin to the collection. This one really focused on his passion and his life - his love for protecting, and looking after wildlife and his family. Absolutely perfect for kids and adults alike. As always the illustrations are beautiful.

I know it is a taboo subject, as he wouldn't want an animal to have a bad name after it due to his death. But it would have been nice to touch on the subject rather than just briefly within timeline section of the book- it was touch on nicely described as tragic death. As Steve Backshall said in an interview when briefly asked about Steve Irwin "Steve Irwin is the exception that proves the rule. So having gone through the medical and scientific literature, there has - to my knowledge - never been another case of someone being killed by a stingray barb to the heart. It wasn't just not just a billion to one shot, it was a many many billions to one shot."

Thank you Netgalley for an advance copy of the book for an honest review

Another fantastic Little People, Big Dreams book about the conservationist Steve Irwin. I really wanted to read this one because having not watched his stuff as a child, I used to (and to be honest still did) quite often get Steve Irwin and Steve Backshall confused (definitely didn't help they're both called Steve) and that bothered me. So I really wanted to learn a bit more about Irwin and all the good he's done and I thought this book would be a good way to start that.
As always, I thought the way the information was presented in this was great. It of course started with his childhood and how his parents instilled his love of animals and helping them which I thought was lovely, and showed lots of the great things he did for animals throughout his life.
The illustrations were great and I love the fact that the series doesn't have all the same illustrator yet each one is always amazingly done. The full page immersive pictures have so much detail but aren't too busy for children, just a nice full scene. I definitely recommend this whole series and this one was fantastic too. I think it will definitely persuade children to care more about animals which is always a good thing.

Once more this series has to fudge the issue of a controversial death – here Steve "wild animals don't hurt me – or my baby son" Irwin is just presented as a perfect eco-warrior, tending to sick crocs, taking charge of nature reserves and animal hospitals alike, and getting to be a media celebrity at the same time. Mind you, the first I'd ever heard of him was when he died. There clearly seems a legacy from the man, as his family still work in the same animal protection areas, but was he someone to infallibly look up to? Perhaps that question is coming from a very naive part of me expecting all influential figures to be squeaky clean, I don't know. But would I have thought him ripe for such treatment as a volume in this series? No, and the end result didn't exactly convince it was essential, either. Still, three and a half stars, to show there are benefits from tending to the world's animals, even if Irwin could be seen as wanting the fame before any of those.
