Prepare yourself for a unique historical fiction experience that defies traditional expectations. Our series ventures beyond the conventional boundaries, exploring modern themes and employing contemporary language. While our tale is set in the Nineteenth century, its narrative was crafted for the twenty-first century reader. Should you find violence, explicit content, or the use of strong language discomforting, we advise against delving into this series. It is not intended for sensitive readers seeking a gentler reading experience.
Carrying a dangerous secret that could ruin the lives of some of New York City's wealthiest, Harper Scarborro is on the lam. This hard-to-resist con artist has learned from the best. Even under Helen Scarborro’s tutelage, Harper has made a grave mistake falling for one of her targets and spilling secrets she shouldn’t have. When he rejects her and threatens to expose her, Harper's only hope is to confess and beg Helen to clean up her mess. Helen grants no mercy and Harper must flee the city for her life. With only the clothes on her back, Harper escapes to the middle of nowhere. Nothing is working out until she collapses into the arms of the reclusive Jeff Pritchard. Despite their rocky start, fate intervenes, and sparks fly in the rugged Missouri wilderness in the fall of 1867. As Harper envisions a new future, her past catches up with her. Will she be able to leave behind her life of deception and start anew, or will the consequences of her past spell disaster for her and those around her? This thrilling historical romance keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page.
Who doesn't love a good comfort romace with predictable tropes? Unfortunately, I could not get past the plot devices, the inconsistency in behaviors in the characters and their thought processes. I still can't speak to the main character's motivation when she makes dumb decisions but is presented as a cunning and smart manipulator. It's not finessed, it's for plot to make the story go where they want it to go, but it's so blunt it pulled me right out of the story.
Not sure if I’ll continue reading this series but it was refreshing to read a quick, slightly sexy but very basic romance book after the long month and a half of reading 1Q84. Didn’t love the characters. The development was shallow. I could predict what was going to happen before it did and it’s the worst when your predictions are right. Either way, my mom recommended so I gave it a shot. I was entertained enough to read this quickly while traveling to & from Portland for the weekend. That’s it. Most likely wouldn’t recommend unless you were going to the beach and wanted something very easy.
I have to say I love Krissyann Granger’s Maxwell Series. I am a nurse and to get me to sit still to read takes alot!! Her books ate captivating and quite the escape for me. I do a count down until she releases new books LOL! This book did not disappoint. I like the realistic aspect of starting from a hard life and just wanting better. Nice to see this didnt show Harper trying to climb the society pole but go the slow everyday country route. I wont say more -but if you need to grab a good quick read, she is the go to person for sure. Enjoy all her book!
It's a decent story. I have a hard time when people keep secrets and don't explain themselves. Harper did not treat Jeff well. I know her actions were because of her life up until that point. She has a lot of growing up to do. Hopefully she will settle down. I understood Jeff's frustration when Harper just wanted to get naked when there were big problems to be resolved. It was still an interesting story.
Book just stopped poor ending that left you wanting a proper finish. So much time spent showing Harper as a devious and cheap character htthen pushing a decent man into marriage and then nothing
I like this book a lot and look forward to the next in the series...it was a sweet love story. My only complaint is that the language used in dialog is more modern than it would have been in that time period
Well written and greatly detailed book! I love the character dynamics and writing style for this modernized historical fiction book and can't wait for book 2!
The story was well written with well developed characters and a good plot. It was almost too long but finally the truth came out and she was better of for it.
