I believe I first read this book in the fourth grade, the year I had Mr. Bridge. Awesome guy with great taste in kid's lit. This book is awesome. I addresses some serious subjects like race and family, and it is utterly charming. I dont care if you are 9 like i was or 90, it is a book to be read!
This is the type of story and elementary school kid would wish is real. It's a wonderful read for little kids and I personally, back in my babysitting days, would read it to the kids. It's awesome and you should read it, no matter what age. Will remind you of good old days. Happy reading!!
This book has a very tall-tale style. It's the story of a saintly orphan's impact on a segregated town. He goes back and forth between the white side and the black side and shows them how easily it's done. The story highlights how he finds good and bad families on both sides of town.
i learned that if you run away from home you would feel very lonely. also there are friends all over the places so you are never alone when you are feeling down.
It sucked! Let me explain: A boy who ran away from his aunt and uncle. Then black people took him in. Then ran away from them because he was scared they would get in trouble because he was white. Several people tried to take him in. At the end when several people tried to pull him in from the zoo where he was living it said, " He knew that finally, truly, at long last, someone was calling him home. " It was so stupid! People were asking him if he wanted to live with them throughout the book! And it was badly written. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!
My favorite book ever. It's a fourth grader book, but I still read it from time to time. It's about a boy who becomes an orphan in a car accident and runs away to a town that still believes in segregation and how he helps them over come it.
A great book for 5th-8th graders about the tenacity of a young boy down on his luck. He takes his misfortunes and turns them into positive experiences to those who come in contact with him.
