An easy-to-read and lavishly illustrated guide to 140 endangered species includes information on each animal's anatomy, status in the wild, rescue efforts to save the species, and prospects for long-term survival.
An easy read and surprisingly informative, all ages will get something out of this book. Encouraging to read about some animal species that have bounced back since 1995 when it was published!
The Golden Guides series of science and nature books were a gateway for me. Those, along with Cub Scouts and my various science kits, started a lifelong love of learning. For the past few years, I have been occasionally revisiting the Golden Guides, some of which I remember owning and reading as a kid, and some of which were new to me—like this one. As befitting its subject, Endangered Animals adopts a more sober tone than many of the Golden Guides, and it pulls no punches in placing blame for many animals’ plights squarely on humankind. I literally found myself near tears at times. I also made frequent trips to the internet to check up on some of the animals, and their progress or lack thereof in the years since the book was published.
