V.F.Mason always loved reading books and had quite a few fights with her mama over the genre she liked (romance, duh!) She studied filmmaking and thought that would feed her desire for stories, but that didn't happen.
Finally, when she was tired of all those voices in her head, she sat down and wrote a book. It was a huge decision to make and she thanks her friends and family for supporting her in it.
When she is not writing, she can be found with her friends doing all sorts of crazy things or reading recent romance books that were written by her favorite authors.

It’s possible to love a man who brings you nothing but heartbreak. And it’s possible to crave revenge after you lost it along with yourself.”

King of Heartbreak was my first V.F. Mason book but will certainly not be my last. This is like Criminal Minds meets romance and I was so here for it.

As for the romance; age gap, revenge, and marriage of convenience (or blackmail)? Sign me up immediately.
Never apologize to me again, Emmaline. I don’t want your atonement. I want your ruin. And I shall have it.”

Before we go into what I enjoyed about this book, let me cover the few quibbles I had first. The main being I really didn't feel this book was a standalone. The story was complete, yes. But there were so many cameos from previous books I haven't read that I was constantly feeling I was missing important context. If I had read the other books, I'm sure I would have loved that here. But as it was, I found myself feeling like I was missing context cues that would have made me enjoy the story that much more.

The next being the overuse of 'darling'. It got to the point that if I made a drinking game out of having a sip each time he called her darling, I would have be three sheets to the wind by chapter 5.

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about what I liked. The romance. I love a good revenge plot and this one was a delicious mystery that goes years back. Rafael is such a complex, tortured character and I couldn't get enough of him. This is man who lived and breathed nothing but his drive for revenge over the past 12 years and would stop at nothing to get it. Even if it means blackmailing the now full grown woman of the once young girl who told a lie and set his downfall in motion. What the lie was? Well, admittedly, I'm still not sure I understand. But dang was I invested.

There is a subplot of a mysterious serial killer and I loved being in their head through the unsub's POV. The pacing was just right, the character development full of depth, and the romance all enrapturing.

One thing I know is that I will be immediately diving into The Land Where Sinners Atone because I need that story!

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: revenge
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

Gahhhh!! Just another fantastic read by VF Mason - completely knocked it out of the park for me! We have Rafe, who we met in the Villian Duet (Rush's twin brother) who is out for revenge against Emmaline (the daughter of Phoenix and Zach from The Land Where Sinners Atone), but revenge is never clear cut, and nothing is as it first seems. And there's a serial killer on the loose. I was super excited for Rafe's story and Ms. Mason did not disappoint.

A perfect Hades and Persephone retelling! A fantastic story about forgiveness, revenge, and what truly makes family, family. The storyline is well written, a little dark, and a bit twisted - just the way I like it, lol. Super fast paced and intense, there were secrets revealed and some great twists. The chemistry between Rafe and Em was practically tangible and they both fight their attraction for all they're worth, because nothing can be easy. I loved the discussions surrounding Em's family's drama. I liked how her feelings were validated by her parents and in the end, it only made their relationship stronger. This story definitely wasn't as dark as other VF Mason books, but it still had me glued to the end. Loved seeing cameos of my favorite VF Mason characters and there were tons of breadcrumbs for future stories as well. Loved it!

This book was a disappointment and so boring. I didn’t get the revenge plot at all. What happened to Emmaline that constituted suffering? Why did she act like her life was so terrible because of her parents’ drama? There was little character development. Why was she so immature, annoying and TSTL? I loved Phoenix’s and Zach’s story.

Also the ending where Ian is cut off? What? So out of character for the Kings. Did they learn nothing? Of all people, Zach should be all about forgiveness! Phoenix is apparently a doormat when it comes to her own son. Disappointing!

“Never apologize to me again, Emmaline. I don’t want your atonement. I want your ruin. And I shall have it.”

Emmaline & Rafael were amazing and now that I've finished the book, I want to reread it immediately! I absolutely loved the angst and the hate chemistry between them and I just couldn't put the book down. At first, I thought I wouldn't like Rafael but he was nothing but a saviour and protector to Emmaline despite claiming to destroy her. And I loved Emmaline's dilemma, it wasn't easy for her to love a man with questionable morals and her thoughts depicted it perfectly which is why I could connect with her. Overall, the book consumed me from the very first chapter, it was well written, had great side characters and the plot was riveting so you'll be in for a thrilling ride!

"Guess we'll have to find pomegranate seeds then won't we darling"

I do not even know where to start!
This is Rafeal's tale of revenge.
The characters interconnect with other stories though it is a standalone
For those who read Rush's story, you have already briefly met our feisty little heroine Em and our dark heartless monster Rafael.

"When we hurt, we hate and blame ourselves, leaving no space for love. And those who don't have love... become very cruel"

Em thought she was doing the right thing but she was young and innocent and sadly easily manipulated. Rafael lost everything because of her lie now he is back to ensure she is punished.

Three months - She will give him three months of her life, the equivalent of what she cost him

"Save the tears and emotions for later. This is just the beginning"

Em is set up for a murder she did not commit
When she comes face to face with the reality of her situation -
Crooked cops -
All evidence against her -
Good guys that aren't so good
She finds she has no choice but to accept her enemy's terms and take the three months in his Hades vs life in prison

"Obsessions are dangerous addictions. And I m afraid I just found mine"

Rafael had his revenge all planned out only a serial killer with his/her sights on Em has moved up his timeline.
As with all great plans, there is always the possibility it will go sideways
For Rafael, his desire for revenge may trigger the family curse

These two...*sigh*
The physical desire between them literally bled off the pages
and when they finally accepted their own truths
HOLY HADES
They were the perfect compliment to the other
I devoured this in one sitting -
The way the story flowed
The intense chemistry
The suspense
The little twists
Cameos from some of my favorite characters
The setup for upcoming character stories
This was not as dark as some of the others IMO
But it did not lack intensity
Another five-star read

This story was primarily about Emmaline and Rafael.

Gotta say I was looking forward to reading it. Although there are some really good parts, overall, the story needed to be tighter. For example, the words atonement/atone/atoning are used at least 24 times in the story. A couple of paragraphs from The Land Where Sinners Love were pasted in their entirety in this book.

Maybe I could have overlooked some of that but Emmaline was written as an immature brat with little emotional growth in the story. There was nothing appealing about her to grab onto.

Maybe this should be called the Unsub series?

I did like the Hades and Persephone connection, though.

When Emmalines life is turned upside and is in ruins the only person who can help is the person who also wants to destroy her but in his own way and he isn’t about to let anyone else do it and Rafael is about to make her a offer she literally can’t refuse if she wants him to get her out of massive situation she’s in

Y bueno extraño a Rush fin

Porfis 🥺

4.5 stars!

I was very excited about this book releasing because it’s a sort of prequel to a duet from this author that I absolutely loved! I grabbed a copy of this book as soon as it released and read it the first chance I had! After reading, I can say that this book did take me a few chapters to actually work out what was going on, but then I was hooked and didn’t want to put it down until I had finished reading! The plot also developed at maybe a slower pace than I was expecting, but I did find myself wanting to read a few more chapters every chance I had! There was a lot of romance in the plot, which allowed for sexual tension and some steamy scenes! There was also some action and suspense, which added to the plot and kept it interesting! I do wish that the suspense element had played a bigger part of the plot, because I felt like it as it was forgotten about for some of the plot! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Emmaline was the main female character, and I felt for her in this book because she was blamed for some heinous murder and her life was in danger! Her life also completely changed in this book and she had to marry a guy she had wronged! I really liked Emmaline and she was determined to earn her own money and not use her trust fund! Rafael was the main male character and love interest of Emmaline! Rafael was a character that demanded attention when he walked into a room and he had a lot of money and was a dark guy! Rafael’s initial intention when it came to Emmaline was to break her, but then he started to fall for her and it really did change everything! Rafael was very protective of Emmaline and This book was mainly written from Emmaline and Rafael’s point of views and then small bits of chapters were written from the “Unsub’s” point of view! I loved that this book was mainly written from both Emmaline and Rafael’s point of views because it helped me connect and understand both characters more and see their feelings for each other develop! It allowed for more things to happen in the plot as well, which helped as Emmaline and Rafael went through some situations by themselves! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! Everything in the plot was wrapped up and all the questions raised were answered! The ending was also left at the perfect place for the characters and summed up their story beautifully! I now can't wait to check out Rafael's brother's duet! Both books in the duet have already released, so I can't wait to learn more about him because he made a tiny appearance near the end of this book! I also love the cover for this book a lot and it's really hot! It would draw me to the book if I didn’t already know the author’s name and the cover model is kind of how I picture Rafael!

4.5 stars!!

This is a stand alone book that has characters from many of her other books. Oh how I love getting glimpses of some of my favorites, including the main characters parents.

So I have been unable to get myself to read and I just couldn’t give this book the attention it needed when it was to be released but the past couple days I finally dug in and boy was I not disappointed. This book was just what the doctor ordered. If you have read VF Mason a before then you know she makes some of the most infuriating bad boys ever who end up becoming our world. Rafael was just that. I had a feeling he would be perfection when we met him in Rush’s book.

This book was well thought out and flowed effortlessly. I love that each of the main characters have these backstories of their parents in which those of us who have read her prior work knew about. But don’t worry if you haven’t it will be this amazing ride you will ride. As always her characters are well developed. This is another great read from this author.

**I received this book as an ARC and in return I gave my honest (late) review **

56% in and although I'm loving the plot and the ML, I hate the FL with a passion I'm so close to quitting because of her. She's beyond immature (yes she's 21, but are all 21 yr olds this childish? my 14 year old niece is much more mature than she is). She ruined the man's life, yet she kept calling him a monster since the very beginning before the deal and everything else. F*cking privileged, spoiled, annoying brat that's so fucking selfish. She says she feels guilt, yet she doesn't show it AT ALL. "oh I'm sorry for what I've done" wow, she can take that apology and shove it. I'm actually hoping the groveling comes from her and not him. I want to see her growth and for her to take accountability for her mistakes, cuz her lack of accountability is grating on my nerves. Also, the audacity of her getting jealous, yet bringing up her ex and praising him in the same breath is mind boggling. And let's not forget the way her inner monologue made me feel like she went through trauma and abuse, when her family have been nothing but perfect and loving, just because she found out about her parents' beginning. Spare me. you literally ruined a man's life you entitled child.

Update: 70% in and not a single ounce of character growth. She just hurt her entire family with her selfishness, vicious words and spoiled self. I hate her.

Amazing Story...Loved every second

V.F.Mason has done to again!! This book is amazing and I loved every minute of this enemies to lovers spin and the mythology embedded within the story was an added bonus. As well as some of our favorite psychos making appearances throughout.

Rafael is so hard to hate because he is so sexy and demanding! He is easy to fall hard for and Emmaline does just that. She has crushed on her for years but their past has darkness that will consume them if they don't work through it. Rafael is determined to make her pay for their past but things don't go exactly as planned. We learn very interesting and deeply dark about his past and he never expected to have these feelings for this woman. But now she is all consuming his every waking moment.

However, someone is trying to hurt what is his and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. This story is intense, emotional, and very sexy. You will devour their story and fall hard for this couple. As always this book is amazing and sheer perfection from one of my favorite authors! Happy Reading!!

what to expect :
•dark romance
•age gap (21 x35)
•hades and persephone
•forced marriage
•good girl x bad “boy”
•he wants revenge
• there is a serial killer after the h

Okay so I LOVED the premise and indeed enjoyed the story but I wanted MOOORE
Rafael hates Emmaline for what she done to him ten years ago and he wants to destroy her life just as she destroyed him. He is mean to her and intends to make her life hell. But after he forced her to marry him it all ends?????? He doesn’t make her suffer even ONCE. Head over heels in love.

Emmaline was a spoiled brat with a 5 yo way of thinking. Sometimes she was insufferable and I wanted to slap some sense into her. She destroyed Rafael’s life (yes she was NINE when she lied about him and destroyed everything for the man) but she never EVER >TRULY< apologized and understood the magnitude and seriousness of her actions. She is just a spoiled baby whos dad will clean up any mess. She knows it.

Honestly? I wanted her to suffered a little more so she couldn’t indeed learn something.

The couple had chemistry so this was good but a lot aspects of the story weren’t properly explained

Love this Queen

OK I love this story so much. For one, this book allows us to see what one little white lie can do to someone. Stay truthful, people!! Also, take your time with this book so you can keep up . I love how in-depth it was and bringing connections of the VF MASON world together. Emmaline King is the daughter of the amazing Zachary and Phoenix King . Yes, they have 2 of their own books. Anyway we know the child off those two will be epic, and she is. Emmaline takes no crap and takes her punishment head on because of her past. I love that she is no crybaby damsel in destress type woman. In walks Rafael Wright with his alpha daddy-ness. Rafael was wronged most of his life, but in the end came out shiny and new. The chemistry between these two is so strong and full of fire. V.f. Mason is my 1 time click author that I will buy and read every single time. I can't wait to enter this world again.

Ms. Mason does it again with another outstanding book.
She is one of a few of my must read authors.
She writes and delivers storylines and plots like no other. And unique and unforgettable characters.
King of Heartbreak is no exception.
After reading The Land Where Sinner’s Love that ending had my heart in my throat.
FYI TLWSL DOES NOT end on a cliffhanger.
But the way it ended I just knew Ms. Mason had something up her sleeve for her followers.
And she absolutely did not disappoint!
This book has a somewhat multilayered plot. The author not only gives us a not typical romance in the making. But also a personal struggle brewing within one of the main characters. That gave so much more depth into the story. And it was absolutely brilliant how she brought everything together.
I always love the bad boy or antihero. So Rafael stole my heart immediately.
His morals are on the lighter gray side of the spectrum. He respects the law. But he also gets want he wants. So he plays within the rules somewhat.
I loved his possessive and protective nature. Even when he didn’t acknowledge what his heart knew.
He always took care of Emmaline. Either personally or through his connections as the powerful person he is.
I adorned Emmaline. I thought she was strong even at her weakest. She is levelheaded and older than her years. Her kindness and caring radiates off her. She loves wholeheartedly and unconditionally.
Her loyalty and love is without limits. Even at it could be at a detriment of herself.
The energy between her and Rafael is so tense filled it’s like a living thing.
But there is so much more underneath all that packed energy.
It’s just brewing and waiting to explode like a simmering volcano.
The intensity with them just keeps getting more and more and kept me clutching my kindle.
Their physical and sexual attraction was so freaking strong and undeniable. But both trying to deny it.
I absolutely knew that when things would eventually explode between them all hell would break loose.
And holy smokes when it did happen their lust and passion was dynamic and explosive.
But what they had also ran deeper and more intimate than just the physical.
The author blow my mind with that extra very genius way she made the bond more intimate.
I adored how she also brought past characters into play here as well. (You don’t have to have read her past books to fully understand and appreciate this book) It was just floored by how everything flowed so superbly and flawlessly.
I shed a few tears along the way. Some parts were emotional and a bit heartbreaking.
The candid and heartfelt discussions were at times heartbreaking and at times healing.
But emotionally nevertheless.
Family is the bonds and the roots that are made and created.
It’s the solid foundation in which even the strongest of winds can’t take down.
Even the toughest of times can’t erode, corrupt or ravage because it already has been set in steel.
The epilogue left a big smile on my face and just confirmed that love and family outweighs all.

I finished it!

There are three tiers of books for me really! Some are so ludicrous, poorly edited and written that I can't finish. Then the top tier has excellent writing, and a good story throughout, minimal or zero editing needed. This is a middle tier: fairly decent writing, but some "duh" moments, some "yeah... right" moments, and irritations like the hero calling her "darling" all the way through - maybe it's because I'm English, but "darling" is primarily used by certain types of people (and these "types" don't say hero to me), but that was a minor thing. I finished it, so 4 stars!

everyone’s pretty stupid

the revenge plot was stupid, their reasoning for “hating” each other was stupid’, the way she got kidnapped was stupid, and truly the reason she distanced herself from her family was stupid

i didn’t like emmalines character at all. she was very naive, constantly acted like a victim, and acted like she knew what was best for everyone. she constantly chose to make the worst decisions and i wanted more of her apologizing to her parents.

rafael had istg the most idiotic reason for hating her and despite the was the revenge was hyped up nothing happened.

which also summarizes their romance. a whole lot of tension but no romance
