Beth Dolgner writes paranormal fiction and non-fiction. Her interest in things that go bump in the night really took off on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, so it's fitting that the Betty Boo, Ghost Hunter Series of paranormal romance novels takes place in that spooky city. Beth's young adult novels, the steampunk Manifest and the urban fantasy A Talent for Death, also have paranormal elements. Her non-fiction work includes Georgia Spirits and Specters and Everyday Voodoo.

Since Georgia is obviously on her mind, you might think Beth lives there. Well, she did, but these days she and her husband live in Berlin, Germany, with their three cats. Beth misses those mild Georgia winters and proper iced tea, but there's no reason her characters can't enjoy those things.

Beth also enjoys giving presentations on Victorian death and mourning traditions as well as Victorian Spiritualism. She has been a volunteer at an historic cemetery, a ghost tour guide and a paranormal investigator. Right now she's chronicling the best spooky spots around Europe.

A famous supernatural singer was coming to town to perform and right before the performance, there was a murder. There was a lot of worry that it might have been aimed at the supernatural singer, thus she sought Sanctuary at the Sanctuary. It disrupted the balance driving the characters to solve the mystery fast so she could safely continue on her tour, or be arrested if she was the culprit.

This book was a good mystery, it does seem amazing that in a sleepy town in nowhere Arizona, suddenly there have been 3 murders in less than 2 months after the MC moved there. If I lived there I would definitely wonder. Still a fun read, I am assuming there is a slowburn romance between two of the characters but it is so slow, it might be at the stones trying to find a spark page.

I received a free audio copy from Tantor Audio and voluntarily reviewed it.

I really like this series so far and was excited to dive into the third book in this series. Slaying at the Saloon was an enjoyable read. I liked following Olivia as she gets involved in another mystery and interacts with the other characters. I like how there is slowly more we learn about the side characters in each book. It's such a fun series so far with plenty of mystery, paranormal and found family.

The mystery in this one was an interesting one. When a server working at the saloon gets killed before vampire Allie performs they are afraid a vampire slayer is in town. There's also a murder that happened a year before that seems vampire related. The mystery had quite some good twists and turns. I was pretty convinced about a certain piece, but was totally wrong about that and in this case it was fun to be proven wrong. The reveals all made sense and I liked seeing it all play out.

I liked reading more about Olivia in this book. She's spending some more time with Damien in this book. And there is more focus on the two vampires she's friends with in this book, it was interesting learning more about them. The other familiar side character like Momma, the witches and other employees at the sanctuary also play a role. And there are some new side characters in this book as well. I enjoy seeing the world and characters come more alive and get expanded on in each book. the narrator for this book is awesome and enjoy listening to these.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this third book. It's such a fun series and I enjoy reading about Olivia and all the characters she interacts with. The mystery in this one was a good one involving one recent and one older murder. There are some interesting twists and turns along the way. I liked seeing it all play out and how the motives and what happened made sense. It nice seeing the world and characters come even more alive with each book. I enjoy listening to this series as the narrator works well for this series and I like the way she does all the voices.

The Sanctuary vampires are a little concerned when a human is found staked. Fortunately for them, Olivia had a front row seat (not literally, I think she was more in the back of the seats, but she was there when things happened) to the reveal of the body and she's not one to let a mystery slide. Especially when her friends might be in danger.

Let's face it, while the victim might have been human, the stake through the heart is concerning.

So Olivia starts asking questions. She formulates theories. She learns about another mysterious death the year before. She refines those theories. She has suspicions. Lots of suspicions.

On the other side of the coin, she and Damien are working together to...I don't know if I'd say they're actively searching for Damien's father, exactly, but they are finding clues that lead to more questions. Damien's also working with Olivia to get a handle on her abilities (although Olivia's half convinced she doesn't actually have any abilities) and the more time she spends with the brooding guy, the more she softens toward him.

Some vampiric shenanigans, a man who likes the ladies, a mine with a secret, and a lady who just can't let injustice lie. So she does something about it.

Olivia was divorced, broke and looking for a job/new life when her broken down rattletrap of a car stranded her in Nightmare, Arizona.
Now she’s been there for a couple of months, she is aware of the supernatural community thanks to her job at the Nightmare Haunted House (aka Sanctuary). She has made friends, been welcomed and solved a couple of murder mysteries.
This time a waitress is murdered just before a vampire singer was to go on stage with all signs that the murderer is a vampire slayer. Needless to say, the supernaturals who live in the Haunted House are extremely nervous.
Olivia, of course, sets out to see what she can find out.
This ends up with a nice mystery, with a couple more to be checked out in the future. The characters are all growing and more is learned about several of them.
There are some humourous things in this book, Mori the vampire has a pet chupacabra, Filipe, who is adorable. Another fun building is the Lusty diner which is located in an old brothel.
A fun, easy, enjoyable book all around.

I am just loving this series and will definitely be buying my next ticket to visit the haunted house. I am not normally a big vampire fan, the whole idea just creeps me out but the haunted house family angle has caught my imagination and I can't get enough. The characters are unique, delightful and quite charming and not at all the monsters most people imagine, in fact it is the humans you need to watch out for. The mystery was good and well plotted to keep you guessing over a number of things. The main mystery does get solved but there is also a side mystery 'of what happened to the owner?' and you learn a little bit more with each book that comes out, so I would recommend you read them in order and although not necessary it does help you keep up with that plot. I hope this series comes out on audible if not on tv.
Everybody is excited a singer is visiting Nightmare Arizona to do a show. The humans because she is famous and has a big following, the supernatural residents because they know her secret, that she is a vampire. However before she can set foot in stage one of the servers is found dead with a stake in her heart. The employees at Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House fear for there safety if a vampire is in town. Olivia is more worried about what will happen to the singer and her manager and invites them to stay at the Sanctuary. Unsure who is responsible Olivia sets out to find the killer, especially as another body was discovered last time the singer was in town. Has she just brought a deadly killer in to live with her friends? Are the two deaths connected? And if so is there a serial killer in Nightmare?

I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntary left this review.

I am so glad I picked this back up and gave it a second chance! I fell in love with Nightmare, AZ in the first book and I really enjoy getting to knownmore of the characters and the town.

Each one of our characters has so much to bring to the table and I love being able to see them in their habitat and navigating the human world.

Our MC definitely has a way about her and how she seems to always find the best way to solve murders. She is still new to the town but has much more in common with the people she works with than she realizes. I'm so glad to see that she is able to adapt to a new way of life while also embracing how different it is.

I can't wait to see how much she grows in her powers as the next book unfolds!

And now in three days, I have finished three books. These are the perfect spooky season cozy reads. I do kind of wish I had saved them for October. As I have said in my other reviews though, now that I have started the series I am absolutely going to binge it until I am finished!

Not my favorite of the series but still good

This part of the series was about vampires which is not my supernatural creature of choice. The writing was super good and I enjoyed it. I plan to finish the entire series.

Olivia is still in Nightmare , working at Sanctuary haunted house and doing marketing for room at the motel. She goes to the saloon to hear singer Allie Nunes with her co-workers but when the curtain rises there is a woman's body laying on stage with a stick in her chest. Was it intended for Allie, who is a vampire, or was she the instigator of this crime? When officer Reyes asks her to keep an eye on Allie and her manager Jon the descision is made to safe guard the pair at Sanctuary until the crime is solved. Olivia puts her detective hat on and looks into the people surrounding the dead woman. In the process she finds a possibly related death from a year ago. A very good mystery and some strong development of the characters in this series.

"Slaying at the Saloon" is book three in the "Nightmare, Arizona" series by Beth Dolgner. Olivia and the citizens of Nightmare have a murder amongst them. Damien and Olivia work together to figure out who the killer is. I like the mystery and paranormal elements of this story. I also like that each book Olivia is finding more and more things out about herself. My favorite scene was when Olivia asked the witches for help, but they explained to her why they couldn't do certain things. I will be reading the fourth book soon to see I there are any answers as to where Damien's dad is.

Loved the first two in this series. This one felt forced and was just okay. I didn’t care about the murder at all. I wanted more answers on the other mysteries afoot.

Two Deaths Within One Year: Was It A Vampire Slayer?

by Barbara Kelley

"Slaying at the Saloon" is Book 3 of the Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mystery series, written by Beth Dolgner. I have been lucky enough to have read some really good books by authors that are new to me. This is the third book I've read by Beth Dolgner, and I can hardly wait to read Book 4 when it arrives in my Kindle. This series focuses on Olivia Kendrick, her accidental arrival in a small, spooky town in Arizona, and her ability to solve at least one murder per book. It is also about the Haunted House attraction in Nightmare, and the plethora of supernatural beings who not only work there, but live there, as well: vampires, ghosts, witches, a werewolf, a mermaid, a banshee, a gargoyle, and so on. Then, there is the mystery of the owner, Mr. Shackleford, who disappeared 6 months before Olivia arrived, and his son, Damien Shackleford, who has at least one supernatural feature; his beautiful green eyes glow mysteriously when he is angry. He has mystery in his life because he doesn't really know what he is, with regard to the supernatural. His mother disappeared from his life when he was a little boy, and she might have been a supernatural being. In this episode, Damien and Olivia open his father's old mine, find a house set up in the mine, and also find a picture of Damien's mother, who had the same green eyes he has. This episode is mainly about a dead saloon girl, murdered by a pool cue, and left onstage in the saloon. Another young woman, a vampire singer was supposed to perform onstage, but couldn't after the murdered girl was found. There are several suspects: the vampire singer, her manager, the dead girl's boyfriend, who has dated his share of young saloon girls within the past two years, and members of the haunted house and Nightmare's normal residents. Another saloon girl was found dead almost one year earlier in Nightmare, almost fully drained of her blood. We're the two saloon girls' murders committed by the same person? Or were the two totally different killers? I had it figured out who committed the girl from a year ago, but didn't know why or how. I was completely thrown for a loop when Olivia uncovered the current-day murder. Let's just say that Olivia has been in town for only two months and she's already solved three current murders and a year old murder that happened before she arrived in town. Another thing I like in this book is that because Olivia got a job in Nightmare when there were not jobs available at the haunted house, and because she got an apartment at a motel that was fully occupied, Damien believes Olivia has conjuring skills. He is training her to use these conjuring skills to find his father and to conjure the truth out of murder suspects. I think this is the coolest thing I ever read. I am a member of Beth Dolgner's ARC team and this is my voluntary review. I gave this book 5 stars and recommend this entire series to readers who love paranormal mysteries.

I’m really enjoying these cozy murder mysteries set in Nightmare, Arizona. Olivia Kendrick is present at another murder, and she’s determined to solve this one, just like she did the last two. It involves a vampire musician and her manager, and no one knows whether the murder was done by a vampire hunter, a vampire, or just a vengeful human. It takes Olivia a while to sort through all the clues, and another murder that occurred at the saloon a year ago needs to be solved as well, before she can understand just what is going on. Olivia is beginning to like her boss, Damien a lot more than she did at first, and they make a good team investigating the murders. All of the quirky supernaturals working at the Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House are Olivia’s new friends and make her part of the family, and they all assist when needed as well. These stories are fun, the mysteries are interesting, and the characters are quirky and unusual. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I love paranormal cozy mysteries and Nightmare, Arizona is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. Olivia ended up in Nightmare when her husband left her penniless and her clunker of a car broke down. She found a job and a family at the Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House. In this book the residents of the Sanctuary are excited to see vampire singer Allie perform at the Nightmare Saloon. Unfortunately, before Allie can perform, one of the human servers is killed with a makeshift stake through the heart. The victim had plenty of enemies so there is no shortage of suspects. Add in another murder from a year ago and amateur sleuth Olivia has her hands full trying to solve the crimes and protect her found family of supernaturals. The mysteries are interesting and well developed. I did not guess who done it until it was revealed. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal cozies.

Good

When there’s a death at the concert of a vampire visiting Nightmare, Olivia is both a witness and eager to make sure the supernaturals at the Sanctuary are safe from suspicion.

Things are moving fairly fast for Olivia, in this third book in the series (standalone mystery in a continuing series) she gets to exercise both her investigative skills, and her possible conjurer ones. She gets a little bit of a closer look at supernatural life, and begins to unravel a few of the Sanctuary mysteries.
It makes for an enjoyable, and action packed tale, filled with mysteries and supernatural shenanigans. It’s a fairly fast paced, paranormal cosy mystery, with a slightly Wild West flavour, and some intriguing ongoing mysteries. Recommended for paranormal cosy mystery fans, and cosy mystery fans who don’t mind a bit of supernatural flavoring!

Audiobook: I enjoyed book three of the "Nightmare, Arizona Cozy Mysteries" series as much as the first two. A server at the Nightmare Saloon was staked through the heart. The inhabitants of the Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House were worried that there was a vampire hunter in town. Olivia Kendrick wanted to help her friends, so she decided to find an answer to their concerns. The paranormal characters continued to captivate my imagination and maintained my interest in this series. Olivia has remained a favorite character of mine. Although the dominant mystery was solved, there remained a mystery regarding the missing father. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Petrea Burchard's narration was fabulous. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which reflected my opinions.

I am so sad that there wasn't a Buffy cameo!

That being said, it was still a fun read. I am just wondering how many murders can take place in this tiny town before the population depletes of residents (between the victims and murderers).

I also wonder if there's a reason for supernatural element in the book at all. I understand that it adds a group of suspects and there's a new and exciting way to kill people when we have that twist, but I feel that its not really adding anything to the story at all.

The slow-burn romance between Damian and Olivia is finally getting to the stage where she doesn't hate him. Its going to be at least 5 books before they have any feelings for each other lol.

I do like the cast of characters, despite having supernatural themes, because she's definitely found a good family there.

I absolutely love this series. I like getting to know each character and seeing how Olivia is growing and developing within Nightmare.
I can't fault Beth Dolgner's writing, every book I've read by her I've thoroughly enjoyed. The writing pulls you in straight away and the storyline keeps you hooked.
The cosiness of the paranormal mystery murders is a great spin on an whodunit concept, whilst still having the ultimate underlying question... where is Baxter?!
The new additions of Allie and Jon was great to the storyline as it gave another look into how the supernaturals deal with things in their world as well as dealing with the human world.
I loved this book and I am over the moon to know there's a book 4 coming in December!!

Slaying at the Saloon is book #3 in the Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mysteries series by Beth Dolgner.

Several residents of Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House are at the saloon to see a special performer when a server is found dead. Olivia is concerned about her friends and begins investigating. Are her actions endangering her friends?

This book is another entertaining addition to the series. I like the variety of characters in the book and how Olivia is still learning to navigate in the supernatural world. There were plenty of suspects and twists to keep it interesting. Damien and Olivia also learn something new about Damien’s father. I can’t wait to read more about what they figure out!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

What's better than family? A real family

Olivia has been working at Sanctuary for a couple of months when there's a death at the saloon where the touring vampire singer is scheduled. At first it seems as if a vampire hunter is in the area. As Olivia looks into the murder she discovers another one year prior. Is there a serial killer and could it be one of the supernaturals? Realizing that she feels a strong loyalty to the supernatural people who took her in and watched over her she wants to protect them and keep their secrets. And she also sees by their actions that they accept her, trust her and will protect her as well. So, she follows her intuition finding not one but two killers.

This series has really sunk its claws into me. I love how all the characters help each other out, and they stand behind each other. In this latest, there’s of course another murder that Olivia is dead center of, and she can’t seem to keep her nose out of it. I love her sassy personality, and I do love all of the other characters as well. I’m enjoying the arc that’s playing out about Damien’s father, and I’m so anxious to see what’s going to eventually happen with that. This is such a fun, well-written paranormal mystery series, and I hope there are many more books to come. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Olivia and Damien are back at it! This time, someone has murdered a vampire at the saloon. Thing is everyone believes it is a vampire hunter and the vampires living in Nightmare are all terrified. Olivia decides to make sure all vampires are brought to the compound, so they will be well protected.
That hacks a lot of people off, and Damien doesn't like it either.
The problem is there are quite a few suspects, and Olivia is, of course, sticking her nose into everyone's business. Since Damien has elected himself to be her protector, they are again doing everything possible to solve this murder, along with a few more!
I love this cast of characters! They make everything so much fun!

The third in the Nightmare, Arizona series, Slaying at the Saloon, continues Olivia’s story and her search to find a place where she belongs. I love the way the residents of Nightmare’s Haunted House care about each other. From the shyest vampire to the grumpiest were-wolf - they’ve all welcomed Olivia to their Sanctuary.
I read cozy mysteries for the puzzle - who murdered the latest victim? Once again, the mystery is top-notch, and I wasn’t sure whodunnit until the very end.
Olivia and Damien continue to slowly develop a relationship, and she begins to think she may have a paranormal talent after all. I’m delighted the 4th book is not far off - I’m hooked on this series!

Nightmare an interesting place to live

These books have an interesting cast of paranormal characters. They have all come from all over finally settling down in what they call “the sanctuary “.
The Sanctuary is a place for them to be safe but they also fund their lives by running it as a sort of haunted house run year round. These books need to be read in order written to understand the backstory of the ongoing storyline. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and hope to read it unraveling some of the up to now very mysterious happenings such as missing parents etc.

Review of Slaying at the Saloon (Nightmare, Arizona #3) by Beth Dolgner

I absolutely love this series and have now jumped into book four! I was initially dubious when I started book one, but I crave each new instalment. Slaying at the Saloon continues to deliver warm, fun, cosy mysteries set in a small town where the supernatural residents live almost like an enclave.

The surprises keep coming, making each chapter engaging and enjoyable. There are no spoilers here, but if you haven't started this series yet, I highly recommend you get reading! Beth Dolgner has created a captivating world that draws you in and keeps you hooked. I can't wait to see where the story goes next! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another solid mystery in this spooktacular series!

This time we've got a mystery involving vampires, and there are a lot of hidden secrets that get exposed.

There were a few times in this book that I found our main character a little annoying. This conjurer stuff is odd because it does seem out of nowhere. We've got Damien pushing that she is one, and Olivia adamant she isn't. A lot more butting heads between the two.

The mystery with Baxter is being dragged out incredibly slowly, which is beginning to feel frustrating. We only get little bread crumbs in each book. I want more.

Hopefully we get more answers in the next book!
