MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series

Matthew 8-15: New Testament Commentary

Rate this book
The Old Testament looked forward to the final King of kings who would bring everlasting salvation and peace. In his Gospel, Matthew demonstrates that Jesus Christ is that King, perfect in His eternal glory and majesty. As the King's ambassadors, Christians today will find in Matthew great motivation for heartfelt worship and service. Join John MacArthur as he explains each verse of Matthew 8–15 in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical. Taking into account the cultural, theological, and Old Testament contexts of each passage, MacArthur tackles interpretive challenges and fairly evaluates differing views, giving the reader confidence in his conclusions. The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series comes from the experience, wisdom, and insight of one of the most trusted ministry leaders and Bible scholars of our day. Each volume was written to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, dealing thoroughly with every key phrase and word in the Scripture without being unnecessarily technical. This commentary will help to give a better, fuller, richer understanding of God's Word, while challenging the reader to a vibrant personal spiritual walk. A great resource for pastors, teachers, leaders, students, or anyone desiring to dig deeper into Scripture

Using the MacArthur Commentary series to help me prepare for my family devotions each evening. I’ve been daily assigning my family the text associated with each chapter, which is often no more than a few verses, and then using the chapter to help me prepare. Goal is to complete the entire MacArthur New Testament series before my 9 year old leaves the house :)

Some of my favorite quotes:

“Repentance is the inseparable companion of faith. All the while that we walk by faith and not by sight, the tear of repentance glitters in the eye of faith.” – Spurgeon

“The things that defile the man come from an unwashed heart, not from unwashed hands. The need is for God to cleanse men’s hearts, not for men to wash their hands.”

"Faith is strengthened by its being taken to extremities it has never faced before."

"The most spectacular miracle was accomplished without Jesus saying a word or raising a hand."

"He came to them through the very danger that threatened to destroy them, walking on the sea. He used the trial as His footpath."

"When believers are in the place of obedience they are in the place of safety, no matter what the circumstances. The place of security is not the place of favorable circumstances but the place of obedience to God's will."

“Salvation costs nothing in the sense of payment but everything in the sense of surrender.”

"Not even the most faithful and enlightened saints of the Old Testament were given the insights that the apostles and every believer since have been given the privilege of having ... as Christians, we not only have God's completed revelation in Scripture but the very author of that Scripture living within us -- to explain, interpret, and apply its truths."
