I am reading Look Homeward Angel by the great Thomas Wolfe...not Tom II.

About halfway through Eugene Gant (Wolfe) spots Wm Jennings Bryan in downtown Asheville, thinly disguised as Altamont.
His first run as the Dem was 1896, but he lost all 3 attempts, also in 1900, and 1908.

He broke out his Cross of Gold speech in 1896.
I knew a little about him, but did a Wiki brushup this morning.

McKinley, the winner, was an interesting case, but he was assassinated. America was saddled with the Regressive Ted Roosevelt then, as he was Republican VP.
