A weak kingdom seeks an alliance with the goblin horde.
The goblin king wants to keep his generals in line. He selects geriatric generals to marry the tribute brides in a plot to infiltrate them...but he forgot they were generals for a reason. The old can be very dangerous, and goblins with one last strike left are fearless.
As for the brides...they’ll discover their husbands aren’t who they expected.
I'm a stay at home mom with three kids, a dog and an active imagination. I spent the first 34 years of my life in Alaska, land of the midnight sun, but these days I'm located in Washington, and am enjoying a much warmer sun :) I'm married to my high school sweetheart, John, who is known to bring me flowers "just because".
My leisure time is filled with gardening, crochet, knitting, sewing, art and reading.
“+War is so ugly. -Not when you’re on the right end of the sword.”
3 stars Interesting premise, but needs editing & proofreading for repetitive words and misspellings. Enjoyed the slow burn but would also appreciate a touch of female empowerment amid passages like this from the H's POV: "When she was out of sight, he shook his head and went about his business. Women were silly, but that made them amusing." ...with no sense of irony; not at all tongue-in-cheek.
This work starts out well but is more of a stretched out short story that, like the crochet the author writes about, has little if any”yarn” about it and lots of holes between. When the climax is reached, the author quickly “tells” the future history of the main characters and the stops. Like stepping off a cliff, no ending, it just stops.
Then the author starts a new short story using the same trope - aging goblin general, young human girl - in the same world and tells that one.
The author writes well enough, but like a 13 year old, she gets distracted and ends the story so she can go out and play. So no, I won’t spend more money on this. Too bad but a veteran author should be better than this!
The concept — political marriages turned into power-plays, Mongol-inspired fantasy cultures, outcast brides acclimating to their husbands' culture and finding freedom and power in their new positions — fascinated me, but the execution was so poorly done that by the end of the sample I was wondering if the whole thing had been written by AI. There were so many inconsistencies in plot and characters and statement, even on the same page; the topic and the POV both jumped around erratically, with no sense of flow; the characters felt flat and caricatured; the prose was leaden.
Fantastic- Fabulous. Loved it, bought it, and will not only buy the series but read them again in the future. Once again, a series I have long resisted and have found it to be amazing!
Its pretty rare for me to find a book/story that I would be ecstatic over, this one ticked all the boxes for me. The goblins were great, the villains' were bad, the humor was top notch with a touch of fulfilling romance and the story was clever.
I liked our heroine right off the bat: “This one is my daughter,'' King Terran said without enthusiasm. “King maker. As you can see she has the mark.” He leveled a flinty glance on her. “Show them.” She hated him so much. and "She felt a little sorry for Cinder’s ancient goblin. She could burn him to a crisp. Maybe they were coming to a truce. He didn’t try to husband her, and she wouldn't roast him. Ha!"
Highlights & Spoilers: As she starts to understand the General- Ashi didn’t know what to think. Everything she’d ever suspected, he’d confirmed. “How do you know this?” “We have spies, of course. The king has been a joke among goblins for a long time. Wasteful, stupid, weak.” He let her process that for a moment. His eyes bore into her. “You are not a joke. You are a kingmaker.”
And this, lol: "She must have picked her goblin up from the lower class, because she speaks like a toad farmer. A fluent toad farmer, but still. The general didn’t bat an eye, but even he admits it won’t do.”
Their interactions were funny: “I think it will be useful,” General Ye declared. He looked thoughtful. “After all, they’re really here to see me. In fact, I think it will be best if you keep your mouth shut. Play mute.” “Mute?” she asked, bewildered. Her mouth puckered in disgust just thinking about her sister coming here. He waved a hand. “Don’t puke on her, though. That was funny, but once was enough.”
Eventually Yal takes his place as her husband, with his son as her family: “Gangsters?” She sat down abruptly, feeling a little faint. “Cool,” Tashi said. Family mealtimes were always convenient for discussing business, so he was usually there. “My murder aunt married a bandit prince. You couldn’t be more goblin if you tried,” he said with approval. “She’s not really related,” Ashi grumbled, ignoring his grammar.
Her viper sister- this was soooo funny, what happens to her after this: "She was tired of him. Madam Bloodhand sent a resentful glance at her husband. True to his word, Artur had given her a generous allowance, but he was so boring. She’d expected danger and romance, and instead she’d gotten bodyguard/nannies who tattled when she tried to hire assassins."
And this sweet ending: “Are you listening?” Ashi asked him, noticing his distraction. She’d been talking for a full minute with no response. “What do you think?” “I think I love you,” Yal said, leaning in for a kiss. “I think you’re the perfect wife. If I see Ye in the afterlife, I’m going to thank him.”
A worthwhile read. Though the storyline was different, the feel of the book reminded me a bit of the Manga Sasen mo Warukunai (A Demotion Isn't That Bad) by Maruha Kirishima & Hayate Kuku.
The romance writing style reminds me more of the type of romance and writing you would find in a book like The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. This could be a pro or a con depending on your preference. In some ways, this type of romance has more depth than the modern over-sexed, extremely detailed (not just physical intimate details, but details about what people are thinking and feeling) romance books. This type of romance doesn't give every thought and feeling, you have to infer and pay more attention to actions and words rather than thoughts.
A little over half way through the book, the chapters go from being long sequential actions to being short "Slice of Lifes."
Pros: -Easy to get into. -Interesting characters . -Sweet Romance. -Clean without being cheesy. -Complex and interesting world. I liked the Goblin society and wanted to know more about it. -Tasteful cutaways.
Cons: -Occasionally the language got too modern and casual, which didn't fit. -Als,o just occasionally, scenes would be summarized rather than written out. It only really bothered me when it came to parts of the love story being summarized.
Not totally a pro and not totally a con: -The main woman is pretty passive. I think that the way she is written is good and realistic, she's not OVERLY passive, but just has that general, "I'm going to flow with things that come," attitude. It can be a breath of fresh air to have a lead who seems like a NORMAL woman, not super-woman. I do think that if all the female protagonists in the author's book are like this, then it would get old, but for one or two books it's okay.
I liked it. I'll be reading more from this author.
I absolutely love Autumn Dawn books! And this one is added to my list of to be read again!
I 100% enjoyed this book! It took me hardly any time to read this book. I didn't want to stop reading it until I was done. The Goblin King is a character you just dislike for all the right reason and 2 Goblin Generals were ones that I truly think you will really like. The Goblin King has a plan and he's really not a nice Goblin at all. The Human King is also another King that you just want to have put in his place because he's another not so nice person! He has a daughter that he wants to get rid of and marriage is the way he's going. And lucky for the Human King's daughter the Goblin General she's married off to is one who isn't awful! Living with the Goblin Generals for the Human Brides is going to be a trial and not everything is what it really seems! To find out what happens with all these Human Brides you are going to have to read this story! Thank you Autumn Dawn for writing books that really draw us readers in and keep us engrossed in them! I truly have enjoyed all of your books and really really can't wait for the next one! You are one author on my any books you write get added right away to my To Be Read List and read as soon as they come out! For anyone wanting to read more of Autumn Dawn I suggest the Convergence series!
The world building was rich and the characters engaging. I only wish it were longer, or a series. I needed more time with this world. I hope she writes more in this universe. Yashi’s story, or Artur’s. Ye’s life as young general. Yal’s rise through the ranks. Ashi’s first encounter with the North. The Goblin Horde’s war march on a whole post this book. Sor Ah’s tale. Slaughter and In’Shi. And of course more Ashi and Yal.
I would not consider this a book for 12 year olds. It’s a book that exists in a treacherous fantasy world, and while nothing is explicit(the torture/killing/sexual romance isn’t described in graphic detail, it’s got tame language), there are a few cold realities that I think while fitting for the story world could be a bit hard for less mature preteen girls. I.e. women using themselves to barter their way into better positions, the giving of a enemy into sexual slavery in a spoils of war situation. It’s made known that she’ll spend the rest of her life in forced prostitution and that the winning side celebrates it. Scandals of a sexual nature are mentioned, sexual assault by men in positions of power are mentioned, and infidelity as an unspoken tolerated practice in some cultures is a steady thread in the story. It’s a great book but I don’t think I’d hand it to my 12 year old niece. I’d definitely hand it to her when she’s 14.
This is two stories of human tribute brides, who were gifted to two elderly goblin generals. Even though they were given to generals a little past their prime, those generals still had very cunning minds, and not everything ended up as the people in power planned.
This is actually kind of a cosy fantasy, with no steam, a little off page brutality, a slight amount of danger to our main characters, and all kinds of entertaining machinations by the generals and their aides. It’s an enjoyable read, with a relaxing feel and an amusing overtone. It’s set in what seems to be a brutal, but fair world, and it’s somewhere between gaslamp fantasy and traditional fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories, and look forward to reading more about this fascinating world. This book is recommended for those who enjoy their fantasy reads on the lighthearted and low steam side.
I pondered buying this book for a time. This is a new author to me and I am very pleased I tried it. I was drawn in from the very beginning. This is not chonk of a book and easily read in a day. Goblins be goblins. They are fierce warriors, intelligent, cunning, and always thinking four or five schemes ahead of their enemies. The brides are unwanted by their people, not valued, and treated as trash. But worthless kings should be wary of old goblin generals. They didn't achieve their tank and long lives by being fools. Easy to read, plot was clear and never in doubt, not overly complicated, and not huge cast of characters. I bought the deluxe edition, the artwork is outstanding and added much to my enjoyment. I am looking forward to adding the next two to my kindle.
First of all, I love this book so much I read it twice in a row (the second time out loud to my husband). I love how relatable the characters are. I love the worldbuilding and attention to detail that make the goblin mountain feel like a real place--a perfect balance of familiar and novel. I appreciated the closed-door relationships. I love the goblins--balancing bloodthirsty and healthy loving romantic partners had to be difficult, but they pull it off. I like the clever political moves and twists.
The book is not as structured as books I usually like. The main female character doesn't even appear in the climax. The good goblins always succeed and rarely struggle, though the reader isn't always aware of this.
I really enjoyed the plot. The characters were great. It was different and kept me entertained. I appreciated the romance that wasn't embarrassingly steamy. The only reason I only gave it 3 stars is, the editing was awful. There were a lot of misspelled words and poor grammar. The author could have used some guidance in her word choices. Do not buy the Audible version. Its awful. It changes the whole tone of the book. That being said, the storyline is so good, I'm willing to go on and hope the next book is improved upon. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I’m new to this author and was not sure about the type of book I would be reading but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the world building. Not overly detailed but enough to satisfy the minds eye and the characters are well rounded. Enjoyed General Ye and Yal, would love a back story of General Ye as a younger goblin and Inda. Looking forward to the next book.
I enjoyed the mischievous goblin personalities, the fairytale atmosphere and romance of The Goblin King. It was well written with some humor and wooing romance rather than sexual dominance. Another story of the goblin world mixing with the humans would be enjoyable.
I really loved this book! I really liked how the heroine was well balanced between feminine and strong. It also had a good balance between plot and romance, and I really appreciated that it didn’t try to double as erotica like many romances on Kindle. Wonderful read, and I highly recommend!
Pulled from the black hole of my kindle. I have no idea why I didn't read this book sooner. It started a bit slow but picked up quickly. I enjoyed the characters and story. There's a very short bonus novella at the end as well. I'd read another book about the Goblin Generals. Fans of Grace Draven should give this author a try.
Thank you for a book I have listened to 2 times in a day. I enjoyed the style and grace of the charters, with a much better definition of race possibility. I am now looking forward to finding you complete work . Thank you for your hard work and your skill at crafting a beautiful story
The first chapter was promising. I expected a strong heroine and a strong plot. But as the pages went on, I was surprised by the clunky phrasing and lack of world building. I kept reading in hopes that my initial opinion would win out but the chapters got shorter and more disjointed. In the end, I felt like I'd just read a high school girls fan fic. Of what, I have no idea.
Felt very matter of fact the entire time and various chapters didn’t really contribute to the plot or relationship building. Considering it’s billed as “slow burn” romance, the romance felt very quick and pretty unbelievable and consisted of the main character thinking what better options do I have? I skimmed most of the final chapters.
DNF @70%. I had the mistaken idea that since this book wasn't Kindle Unlimited it would be better. It wasn't. The very interesting premise that hooked me in the preview sample failed utterly to materialize later in the book. There really isn't a story here, no emotions, just a series of vignettes giving the outlines of a story. Very disappointed.
I really enjoyed this story. A complete stand alone novel that is character based. Here the story is focused on the slow burn romance. The political plots are a back drop.
Nice summer read. I wished it could have been a little longer. It was interesting and the subjects were just different enough to keep me entertained. It needs a little better proofreading but otherwise I enjoyed reading this story.
I dislike reviewing books and only review outstanding ones. This book had new world building, very interesting characters, and goblin intrigue. More of these please! I wish I could find more like this.
I liked this book though I can not pinpoint exactly why. The heroine is by her own admission a cream puff. The hero is gruff, ruthless and a complete puddle when it comes to his wife. The world building is not over the top and believable.
(I wish this author was on Kindle Unlimited because I'd like to read more of her books, but I prefer not to buy/keep this type of books as I usually don't re-read them.)
I have well over 4,000,000 books to read including books by favorite authors and series I have been reading. Lately none of them have been able to grab me. This book was a refreshing change which I thoroughly enjoyed. I fully intend to check out other books by her!
This was so entertaining, I truly enjoyed this book and who would of thought Goblin for hero’s I wished Cinder was not murdered so quickly I would of love to know more about her.
I may read more - Goblins as cunning, manipulative....hunks. Don't let the green skin, the ears and the fangs fool you, there is a great deal of very sexy competence going on between those ears. I enjoyed the Goblin General.
This was surprisingly good, and the audible is pretty good, especially since it’s AI-generated, which was interesting. But I like the politics in the twists that were introduced.
