Born the son of a poor Cape Breton miner, Andy MacDonald and his ten brothers and sisters never had quite enough to eat. But always resourceful, Andy once ate an orange flavoured cardboard duck to supplement a meager Christmas dinner. Andy not only survived; he also lived to write about the bitter-sweet and hilarious tales of growing up and living on the edge of a poor coal-mining town during the dirtiest of the thirties.

I love funny tales from the old days and this is very humorous. A simpler version of the more complex and funny Angela’s Ashes.

my dad grew up in the same town in the 40s and 50s so i read this to get an understanding of what life would’ve been like for him. so many elements of the stories in this book line up with how my dad described things back then so i loved hearing them in detail from someone else’s perspective. a simple book with many funny moments.

My whole family loves this book. We have to take turns reading aloud when we are overcome with hysterics. One of my all time favourite books!
