I wish I’d read this book 25 years ago! I might have saved myself a lot of pain and worry! It’s a bit dated in terms of technology but the principals of money management are timeless.
A little marvel and eye opener. Enticement by credit card companies, banks and shops to spend what we don't have or even want. The figures are astounding, virtually criminal and lead consumers into financial trouble. Having never owned a credit card or even ventured into debt, this guide for clearing red balances was read through interest and not advice but to know how the general public are exploited into the state where the average adult spends 10% more than their income was a revelation. Told as a story with real examples, this book is easy to read and places blame on commercial enterprises not the individual who is coerced into a spiral of debt.
Written in the style of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Rob Parson's book is an entertaining read as well as a very informative guide to managing debt. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody who is having problems managing their finances. I also think it makes a great read for parents and teachers for teaching children the facts of financial life.
Really good book, makes reading about managing personal money easy and the style is great. Main complaint is that really the entire book is about managing debt, which I don't really feel is made clear in the title or the blurb. Though the book has obviously been helpful with awareness of the effect of debt I don't feel much wider on how one should be using and saving money if they're not in debt
An excellent story to make sense of good money management techniques. I found I was able to retain these methods and use them to get debt-free. I regularly gift this book to others to support them. I highly recommend this book
Basic advice in the form of a story or parable. That's not a bad thing. Common sense is surprisingly uncommon. A very easy read though, and ideal for someone who might find other personal finance books a bit dull or lecturish.
This is a book that everyone should read! Not enough education regarding financial terminology and awareness of the tricks that companies play leads people into serious debt. They blame themselves but often it’s lack of understanding that has put them there.
A very good book, which deserves to be updated. Advice and wisdom is timeless, but some of the examples and illustrations are a couple of decades old, and a lot has changed.
If your bad with handling money. You have more shoes than sense - then this book is ideal for you!!
But if you're like me - a natural born investor who saves to enjoy luxury and not the other way, then its pretty pointless cos its just telling you things you're already doing.
It's a book id give to a teenage girl or that girlfriend with a bad shopping habit and credit card usage. other than that - it has some pretty good contact references for companies who can help, advice or manage debt.
If parsons had simply just written out the actual financial advice and (jaw-dropping) facts in the book without the storyline, no one would get more than half way through. But, wrapped up in this surprisingly captivating story, the trade is hooked and can't put it down. Read in one sitting in around two hours, I now have a totally different idea of debt and wealth and how to escape the clutches of the former and stay good friends with the later!
Great book, good for explaining in a simple way subjects including debt, credit cards, store cards etc. Great for anyone that has money issues of any sort. The type of book i would encourage my teenage children to read if i had teenage children!
Transforms the way you view money debt. Very easy to read book. He uses a fictional story of a girl about to commit suicide due to debt and places a godmother type person in her life to explain how easy it is to get into debt and how to get out of it. Great book. Thoroughly recommend.
