Webley and The World Machine

Rate this book
"This world within a world is such a fabulous concept! It's almost like Star Trek, Doctor Who, and the Bible all mashed up together with a steampunk twist." A strange coin. A mysterious elevator. And a war deep within the Earth that could destroy the world. Adal and Arija weren't concerned with what makes the world go round until they followed an old coin into a dark cave. Deep within the Earth is a world they never dreamed possible. A world that will challenge their most important beliefs. A world that will soon be torn apart by war. Webley controls the center of Earth, but not all his creations are happy. When the hidden plot to overthrow him turns violent, Adal and Arija are forced to choose sides. But the dangers are more than they could have predicted. Will their hidden feelings for each other help them through it, or rip them and the world apart? If you like Cassandra Clare, Quantum Leap, and Lindsay Buroker, you'll love this hilarious portal adventure full of snark, sass, and one curious little robot boy. "Get yourself some caffeine because if you pick up this book, you're not gonna wanna put it down." "As I settled in for a nice traditional old century Steampunk story, I was quickly thwarted when I discovered that Webley is not traditional, but... it is fantastic" "I love YA/steampunk/fantasy but this takes you into a wild wonderful new way of looking at this genre."

I've made very few forays into the steampunk genre. What little I've read tends to define the limits of my imagination, which is something of an embarrassment. I can believe in magic and in psychic abilities, in unicorns that heal and in familiars that speak in human tongues. But I can't believe in a machine that sits at the center of the world? Why not? Why should that be the idea I can't follow down the rabbit hole?

Still, I LOVE the cover on this one, so I had to try it. And then it even had illustrations! I'm a sucker for art in a book. I think it comes from my dad reading to me when I was a kid. The editions he read from--Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson, and so many more--all had illustrations scattered like rare diamonds between the pages, and each one felt like a discovery.

And I loved the descriptions in this one too. The clothing, the mechanical creatures, the underground world--all presented in detail. The clockwork androids that walk and talk and think and feel. Which is, in itself, a kind of magic. And why shouldn't clockwork mechanisms be imbued with reason? Or with magic, for that matter?

Why is that, for me, the place where the sidewalk ends?

I don't know. But I'll keep returning, I suppose--drawn by curiosity--to stare into the dusk and wonder what other worlds might be waiting for me, if I could just step off the edge.

⚙️”Webley and the World Machine”⚙️

“It’s bioshock meets sucker punch with a side of Wild Wild West and a dance of League of Extraordinary Gentleman! “

Okay first this novel took all prior opinions of steampunk and flipped it upside down! I don’t want to spoil it for other readers so here goes nothing...

Adal is constantly policed by his parents. Nothing he does is good enough. Except for his grandfather! But sometimes bad things happen yet can change your life forever in the most monumental way possible!

Arija is a lovely girl always watching out for adal.. she strong beautiful and very artistic. Her mother’s death only strengthened are resolve to be stronger and fight harder.

Finding the world machine was a accident. Or was it? They’re the only ones who can save those who they have left. They are in a war they never asked for. However, this war is far more than glory. It’s for the survival of all of the world.

With Mechanical monsters nipping at their heels, will adal and arija survive this long enough to save everyone they love? Or will they fight until the death knowing they gave it all they had?

Check out this review, and many more, on my blog https://jessjesinghaus.wordpress.com

This young adult romp combines classic Coming of Age themes with a rich fantasy world. And steampunk! I’ve been needing more steampunk in my life. Adal and Arija are two typical teenaged kids, the best of friends (with a tiny extra spark between them which may just grow into something more). I loved their friendship; they’re candid, sassy and unapologetic as they egg each other on, throw barbs and basically turn each new danger they face into some sort of competition.

After Adal suffers a tragedy, Arija accompanies him to blow off some steam. In their wanderings they find themselves falling through a cave and into a strange new world peopled with intricate mechanical beings. The titular Webley is a joyful wonder! He’s a gentle giant with a heart of gold.

And that’s the main theme for me: heart. Webley’s creations are the mechanical, beating heart of Earth... Adal and Arija coming to grips with their own hearts and the responsibilities that come with it, not just to themselves, but to each other and to humanity as a whole... The idea that machines can love and feel a sense of family.

Don’t get me wrong, these sound like heavy themes, but this is a kick-a$$ romp full of action and humor. The story concludes in a satisfactory way while leaving a “door” wide open (wink wink... you’ll get it when you read the ending) for many more adventures within the World Machine. And I can’t wait!

Highly original and entertaining.

When the byline of ‘Webley and the World Machine’ promises "a steampunk adventure full of sass and snark” it is a very good indication of what the reader will experience in this book. The adventures of Adal and Arija make for a highly original and entertaining read.

Adal and Arija are typical teens, each with passions and interests that motivate them, both unfailingly loyal and committed to one another as best friends. The story takes them on a journey that challenges their resilience and their individual understandings of life as they have always known it and, at the same time, strengthens and transforms their friendship. They are people that young adult readers will relate to in many ways, including their experiences of life and of other people who are not so easy to get along with, the priorities they hold, and the way they speak and interact with one another.

The intricate and multi-textured world building in this novel is testament to the immense imagination and creativity of the author and adds a lot of interesting sensory detail to the story. The settings, characters and creatures are brought to life vividly, and the story is very well paced.

In short, there is absolutely nothing that is boring or mundane about this book.

Steampunk literature is a difficult thing to pull off, but Webley and the World Machine does just that. Mr. Chopchinski has created a universe so vivid and alive I found myself never wanting to leave. The way he describes each character is breathtaking. Webley and his creations are unique, complex, and compelling in a way that was not only beautiful but intellectually stimulating.
Arija and Adal are sent on the adventure of a lifetime when they fall down a preverbal rabbit hole and find themselves in the world machine. I have to say, the chemistry between these two characters is off the charts incredible. I was so emotionally invested with what happened to them that I audibly gasped when Arija’s sketchbook landed in the water, destroying her beautiful artwork.
As their journey brings them deeper, exploring Webley’s creations, we learn there is a darker side to the world machine. This was part of the book I found absolutely terrifying. The danger was real. The action was well thought out and written flawlessly.
Please, do yourself a favor and read this book. I promise you won’t be sorry.

I began reading this novel with no prior knowledge of the topic and, subsequently, no preconceived notions. As a result, I fell into a wonderful story for late elementary/middle school readers. The language and situations presented have the potential for meaningful discussions with this age group.
The initial two protagonists, Adal and Arija, are humans from our world. Once they travel into the Machine, the reader is introduced into equally captivating non-human characters. Even though these other-worldly characters aren’t human, they exhibit the thoroughly human qualities of compassion and friendship. The novel follows the adventures of Adal and Arija as they navigate their new surroundings, while also introducing the reader into a new world where things are not as they seem, but are yet oddly familiar. It is this entrance into another world, and the ensuing war between various factions, that make topics that are often difficult to discuss more palatable. Topics such as ethnicity, bullying, gender identity, and familial relationships are presented in such a way that further discussion may ensue, depending on the readiness of the reader, but are also deftly incorporated into the story so that a reader may just read as part of the story without any further thought.
This novel would be an excellent guided read for struggling readers, or as an independent read for mature elementary readers or most middle school students. There are numerous passages that would serve as examples for descriptive writing, or, for students who are so inclined, to illustrate. In a nutshell, this novel provides numerous entry points for tapping into the interests of middle school students. It is action-packed with a bit just enough historical referencing for it to be of use in a classroom (for further research). The steampunk elements, as well as the imaginative descriptions of the Machine, make this an enticing read that on the surface appears to be pure escapism, but in actuality provide material for a meaningful discussion of literary devices and author’s purpose. Bonus: this will be appealing to boys, particularly boys of color, as the protagonist is an African-American male.
I do highly suggest that this novel be pre-read by either a teacher or parent before handing to a student as the topics may cause some questions. Personally, I would love to write a reading guide and lesson plans to accompany this novel as I think it would be an engaging read for middle school boys. I am also hopeful that the rest of the series will as engaging and aprapo for teens as this. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Welcome to the marvelous new world of Webley and the World Machine.
Enter this world and imagine everything you ever wanted a Steampunk novel to be, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
Welcome to a world of cogs and gears and sprockets.
This book reads easier than most 300 page novels, with its effortless flow of words it doesn't feel like a huge novel at all, but boy does it pack a punch.... (pun intended)

Adal and Arija are 2 teenagers who get taken down the proverbial rabbit whole to a mechanical world inside our own earth. There they meet Webley, the Creator of this wonderous new world and a whole bunch of fantastically colorful characters. They learn about the origins of this strange place, kick butt and have your sides splitting with laughter.
There is also a dark evil to this place, a force they will have to face, but what other secrets lays in the machine?
Zachary Paul Chopchinski is a new to the Steampunk Genre, but take note of this title, because it is going to be the go to steampunk book of the year!!
Webley and the World Machine is so well written that every time you enter the pages, it is like stepping right into this amazing world.
I cannot give enough praise to the extraordinary world development in this book, it truly sets it appart from anything out there. It's fresh, new and packed full of action, drama, suspense, chemistry sparks that could light a house on fire between both Adal and Arija and Cog and Avani, and definitely not forgetting the epic battles written in tactical precision.
The word play is absolutely brilliant, it's quirky and very cleverly incorporated.
My mind has been blow by this tale of love, loss, friendship and humor.
What will the author think of next???
Don't miss this book, it will rock your machine!!!

Overall this was a good read, but I have to confess, I struggled with some aspects of this book.

I'll start with the positives. It's a great concept - a mechanical world underground - and I enjoy Steampunk so I was looking forward to this. The two main characters, Adal and Arija are good fun. They're bold and gutsy, with lots of personality. The World Machine is great, very inventive, with lots of detail. Webley and Cog are also solid characters. There's a satisfying back story and history too, and of course a conflict that Adal and Arija are caught up in, with implications for the world on the surface. The pace is good, and there's lots of action. The dialogue is quick, and the verbal sparring fun. There's also broad scope for other stories.

There are a few negatives. The point of view kept flicking between Adal and Arija, which I found disconcerting and confusing. Some things were described too much, which also made things confusing and slowed down the story. Fortunately these issues settled down as the story progressed. The start of the book is a bit slow, but once Adal and Arija arrive in the World Machine, the story picks up and finds its pace.

I obviously won't say how this ends, but it was a strong finish and a satisfying end to the story, and it sets up another adventure - in a way you won't anticipate!
By the way, I love the cover and the artwork!

I found Webley and the World Machine a bit slow to get into but once the story got rolling it barreled down the tracks like an unstoppable freight train. What it promises it delivers in spades. And I appreciated the diversity in the book.

On the negative side, I did feel like it stumbled just a bit at the very end. A new storyline came up before the old one felt adequately resolved. But by that time the momentum of the story is enough to pull you to the end and want the sequel. I would also say that this book could have used one more round of editing before release. There is a proclivity for mistakes with homonyms, such as using the word sentries instead of centuries. It isn’t bad because you can pretty much always figure out what was meant in less than a second but it is common enough to be noticeable.

The story and the characters of Arija and Adal make up for any faults though. Their interplay and camaraderie is what really gets the story to thrive. They are both extremely competent characters yet still manage to compliment each other’s skills in a very satisfying way. Their long friendship and budding romantic feelings are the solid center that keeps all the wonder in check.

All in all a great romp of a read. I'll certainly be preordering the next one.

Steampunk and Spunk
Bymaryon January 17, 2018
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. It starts with a couple older teens on the cusp of adulthood and their typical problems. Adal gets life changing news and the way he responds leads him and his best friend on a journey that is much bigger than either could have dreamed possible.
I became attached to the characters quickly and even had to stop reading for a bit when Adal got "the news" because it was so personal for me. I couldn't stay away for long though and started reading every time I could get a few minutes to devote to the book.
Mr. Chopchinski did an amazing job of creating a world and characters that I could lose myself in.
The story is easy to follow and the setting is rich and detailed. If I had one complaint, it would be that the language (typical teen language that isn't over the top) will keep my youngest daughter from reading something she would potentially love. I'll just save it for later.
Thank you, Mr. Chopchinski, for creating and sharing a world that I could hide away in. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Steampunk... Not really an interest of mine. I have read a few books in the genre and wasn't overly impressed. I am a huge YA fan and the blurb sounded interesting so I gave this book a shot.

The prologue threw me off a bit. I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but I kept reading and I am so glad I did.

This world Mr. Chopchinski created was so unique, so perfectly detailed that I could envision everything the characters were seeing. Then add in the occasional perfectly drawn pictures and it brought the world and characters to life.

The characters.. Amazing depth, you really feel their emotions, their struggles, turmoil and loyalty.

The conflict was unique, the story overall was fast paced and perfectly told. The ending wrapped up the story but gave us an inkling of what is coming next.

I can not wait for more in this series.

Now that was a fun read. I love the creativeness of the read and how it mixes history with imagination. This is most definitely a book I will enjoy reading with my grand-daughter. There are wonderful characters with fun and excitement and yes there is action. There is a host of characters that are discovered in this steampunk read (and yes this is my first of this type I think) each one unique. Kip is a character all on his own and leads their next adventure (I think I would have to put a harness on this kid). Adal and Arija find themselves knee deep in adventure just from saving a coin. That's not the only thing going on with them but as they battle their way thru the Creator's world they also find themselves and each other.

I loved this book and had so much fun with everything that was going on. I really enjoyed this take on creation from this new to me author. I love the intricacies and interactions, the characters!! Oh yeah this is a great read and I will most definitely be reading more from this new on the scene author.

This was such a cool concept for a story! I loved the idea of a whole new, strange world right under us. And this world was particularly awesome!

Sometimes I feel like things could have been explained a little better. There were a couple times when I didn’t quite understand how something happened. But for the lost part that wasn’t a problem.

And I really enjoyed the characters! Everyone was so unique and developed. I especially loved Kip. He was so spunky and delightful!

Overall, despite some minor issues I had, this was such a fun read. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I was given a copy of this book as part of the release party put on by the author. Thanks so much for the chance to read it!

Wow, this was my first steampunk book and I was enjoyably surprised. I've never had much interest in the genre but was drawn to it's cover and given personal recommendations, and after giving it a try, I loved it! The author's writing has such incredible depth and detail in both his writing style and character development. He brings the story to life in rich detail so that you become a part of Adal and Arija's adventure. I loved the relationships between his characters and the complicated and even philosophical hardships they faced. The mechanics we're incredibly imaginative too. The story will leave you with questions (intentional, I'm sure), but I'm excited to say I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book!

This world within a world is such a fabulous concept! It's almost like Star Trek, Doctor Who, and the Bible all mashed up together with a steampunk twist. Don't worry if your imagination isn't up to par, there are plenty of incredible illustrations included, but not so many as to make it seem like a children's book.

Each of the characters have such fun and entertaining personalities, which makes for pages and pages of hilarious banter. Adal can't keep quiet if his life depends on it, Arija always bests the boys, Webley is so mysterious, Cog is so alive, Kip peeves me, Fausto is full of lost potential, and Creepy Daddy Longlegs is my favorite.

So stop reading reviews and just read the book already; it's a good one!

I did not buy into this story. While characters seem interesting and the story line could be good. I was not pulled in by the main characters reactions to the situation they found themselves in. There was a lack of emotion and the characters just sent with everything as though it was a normal day. The attempt at developing a small love story within also did not sit well. Potential to be a good read but I found it annoying more than enjoyable.

I really enjoyed writing Webley and The World Machine. This was my first steampunk book and I found that once I got into my character's voices that it was a lot of fun to develop. I definitely think I'll be sticking around the sci-fi genre for a while. I already have plans for several more books that take place in the same universe (The Hall of Doors Books). These books will all be stand alones and many will take place on entirely different planets or dimensions, however there will be a lot of character cross over and I do have plans to write a few more books in The World Machine! Thank you all so much for reading Webley and for all your support and encouragement.

This book was so gooooddd! I'm beginning to think I really enjoy Steampunk books.

Webley and the World Machine was such a fun read. I loved the storyline and the plot. It was such a different book. But I was absolutely SOLD just as soon as I saw the art in the book. Put maps, art, music or anything of that sort in a book and I'm 100% more likely to read it and love it.

I just wish the book was polished a little bit more and I wish the ending was a little more fleshed out. Like the entire book is so full of little details and art and wonderfulness that the ending to me felt a little abrupt.

But I adored the characters and the writing style flowed well too.

Overall, a great read! ♥

Adventure and action abound within this story. Adal and Arija stumble into a strange new world and the storyline storms along with hardly a dull moment but, I would have liked more emotional depth to the characters as I felt it would have allowed me as a reader to bond with them better. Pardon the pun but it was like I only got the nuts and bolts of the story when I really wanted the whole toolbox.

It was a good story that changed my look at steampunk novels.
Adal - a boy that can't be good enough for his parents. He got something from his granddad - it will cause a thing in his life as well as his friend Arija.
Arija is a girl that looks out for Adal, she has something in herself.
This book was really interesting.

Weeee!

I was familiar with steampunk before this book, but this way first steampunk novel and wow! It was absolutely spectacular.

The story is told in third person so we get to ‘hear’ a lot from both main characters Adel and Arija. The two have been best friends for a long time and there’s lots of playful banter on the page. You’ll quickly start rooting for these two to make their friendship something more.

The world Mr Chopchinski build is vast and well through out, right down to its origins. There is a reason for the steampunk, instead of it merely being an alternate reality.

The side characters are well fleshed out, though they all still carry some mystery about them.

Get yourself some caffeine because if you pick up this book you’re not gonna wanna put it down. Find out why the world goes ‘round and breath a finally towards the end, I can’t wait for the next book!

So this sci fi, steampunk action adventure is gripping. I loved the story and the characters, I mean it was a tad cliche in terms of story at times but what story isn’t. The style and overall plot is something I haven’t come across before in my cast reading. The author, Zachary, has this amazing ability to write fight scenes and this is where he truly stands apart from his fellow writers. I loved the detail of the drawings I. There and the characters are so well described that I could picture them so clearly.
A definite must read for sci fi fans and even just fantasy fans.
My only issue is the words were hard to grasp so found it a tad confusing but not so much it disrupted the story.
I’ll defo be reading more
