From the ancient to the modern, from the bizarre to the noble, the world's man-made structures stand as unsurpassed examples of the ingenuity and muscle required to transform a vision into miraculous reality. "Structures" pays tribute to these awe-inspiring feats of human creation. Here from every continent are the superlative achievements of architecture and engineering: the largest, longest, highest, most massive, and most ambitious structures ever made by human hands. Their origins, design, and construction are recounted in entertaining and informative text and illuminated with a wealth of photoraphs, working diagrams, cutaway drawings, and etchings that bring the work to life. "Structures" is both an anatomy and a celebration of the triumphant alliance of human technology and human spirit.
A very nice coffee table type book with nice photography, and decent overviews of various architectural and engineering feats. It was particularly interesting reading about the world trade center in light of what has happened since. The section on the Hubble space telescope described hopes for what it could achieve, and now many years after the publication, Hubble has lived up to those expectations, and more.
