1. This book gives an historic account of why the Great wall of China was built. It gives fun fact and many pictures that show the hard work it took to build and just how big it is. We learn that China built the wall to keep the invading Mongols out of China. 2. For grades 2-4 3. I would use this with world history or around the Chinese new year. 4. I think students who like to build things with legos or block in class would enjoy seeing this book. 5. This book would be fun for kids to go through and find 3 facts they found interesting to share with their group. 6. As a whole class I would read to students and explain why they needed to build the wall. 7. There a number of books you can find related to the great wall or even broaden the work and look at the & wonders of the world. 8. PBS has a good video on the Great wall its not about the book but they go furter in depth with the facts.
Great introductory book for young readers or as a read-aloud. Doesn't sugarcoat history - says slow workers were buried alive in the wall. Excellent illustrations. My 6 year old daughter really liked it and said that is why neighboring countries should get along (so they don't have to build a wall?). *Read by Grampa.
I'm not sure if there are very many children's books about The Great Wall. This one was informative and did not omit aspects of exactly how the wall was constructed. The black and white illustrations were pleasant. We read it, covered the topic and moved on to more inspiring and entertaining books about China.
A beautifully illustrated book about the history of the Great Wall of China. It does end rather unfortunately with the emperor of China proclaiming that this wall would keep the Mongols out of China forever (not so much, as history shows, but OK). I read this to my 7 & 8 year old sons as part of a homeschool History unit on the Mongols.
fairly enjoyable, but my unfamiliarity with Chinese weighed against me at times. Curiously, the smallest part of the book concerned itself with the the building of the iconic parts of the wall. Not of itself a bad thing, but it seemed we were racing to an end.
This was beautifully done: the writing was simple and the drawings reflective of the story. So easy to read and perfect to pique your interest about this amazing wall with so much history ingrained into it.
This is a perfect book on the Great Wall for elementary school readers. It has great illustrations and provides just the right amount of information for a beginning history student to digest.
Leonard Everett Fisher did a fantastic job briefly describing the history of the Great Wall of China with an easy to follow narrative and stunningly detailed illustrations. This would be a perfect addition to any classroom or school library to assist students when covering Ancient China or just for an entertaining and informative read.
Really well-done story about Shi Haungdi and why and how he had the Great Wall of China built. Told as a story, with nice illustrations. Not the typical dry kids' non-fiction.
Notes: non-fiction told in story format lots of Chinese names to learn to pronounce best for age 8+ talks of workers being buried alive or dying while working lots of great illustrations
