This easy-to-carry and very practical devotional resource will help all individuals, congregations, families, and small groups looking for assistance in prayer and in leading groups in prayer. It includes all the material from the Daily Prayer section of the full-sized edition of the Book of Common Worship . It features rubrics and blue and maroon ribbons. The cover is also a brilliant maroon. Orders for morning and evening prayer are provided, as well as the psalms and the daily lectionary. Prayers are also included for family and personal life, the church, national life, world issues, and environmental concerns.
Really, no one can put this book under "read" because it is an ongoing devotional book, but I used it through lent for morning prayer this year, so I got a good idea of how it goes. Overall, I like it a lot. I like how comprehensive it is and how it harkens back more to pre-Reformation prayer (what could be called a breviary). I have questions about why it uses the apocryphal Prayer of Manasseh. I also would like it to incorporate the saints of the day more and to have more changes with the daily collects. Some of these I can do myself though, if I get a hold of the other parts of this series of books. I am trying to basically have a big collection of liturgical prayer resources to use, and this one certainly is an excellent part of that.
Pros: (1) sets out an order of prayer for morning, midday, evening and compline; (2) Formats for chanting canticles and most psalms; (3) almost all of the prayers at the end of all of the Psalm portions are high quality; (4) a different set of thanksgiving and intercessory directions for each day of the week morning and evening.
Cons: (1) Doesn't have all of the Psalms; (2) litanies and prayers for various occasions runs from poor, cheesy and bland to decent, reverent and thoughtful; (3) no place for confessions of sin or confessions of faith in either morning or evening prayer; (4) because the Psalms are gender neutral the messianic texture is wiped out.
Overall, not the best resource engaging in the daily office.
