When reality is a web of lies and the truth endangers all you hold dear...Trust No One.
Secrets lead to betrayal. Drafted into the nebulous underworld of a secret agent before the ink on her diploma dried, MJ Thornberg survived betrayal and attempted murder at the hands of her trusted partner. Instead of returning to the deadly realm of espionage, she chose to retire to a small Texas town and work as a mechanic while raising her soon-to-be-adopted baby daughter.
Haunted and seeking redemption. Ben Walker is a man with his own secrets. An agent with MJ's former employer, Vista Security, Ben is clawing his way out of a downward spiral from a job gone wrong when Vista sends him after MJ, with orders to use the threat of halting her baby's adoption to ensure her cooperation.
Danger at every turn. Furious and trusting no one, MJ intends on working the job solo until a sniper's bullet alters her plans. With no choice but to work with Ben, MJ must confront ghosts from her past, discover truths of her present, and trust that the future she deserves is in her hands to create.
*** EXCERPT:
Betrayed . . .
"Who you working for, Keith?"
"No need for you to know," the man behind her said. He poked his revolver into her back. "You're gonna be dead."
She ignored him and focused on Keith. "How much money? Who's the target?"
"Stalling, MJ? Afraid to die?"
"I knew the risks going in. So did you. But what about the innocent people who'll die if you sell that information?"
"Sorry, baby, but I don't have time to debate philosophy." The sound of a distant engine made Keith pause and tilt his head to listen. "That would be the extraction team," he said.
MJ tightened every muscle, ready to spring. It well could be his team, but it could as easily be hers. Even if she wasn't in position for the original pick-up, she'd sewed a small tracking device in that backpack.
"No time for long good-byes." He raised the gun.

An exceptionally well-executed element of Mafia culture combined with a high level of danger make the book fresh and impossible to put down."

Wow! This book reminds me of the reason why Diana Layne is one of my favorite authors. Her writing style is lean and pointed, just like her characters.
‘Trust No One,’ the follow up book to her action packed heart-pounder, ‘The Good Daughter,’ is cocked and loaded, beginning to end, and features not just one, but TWO tough, beautiful women—former Vista Security agent MJ Thornberg and her sister, Tasha. Separately, hard to handle, together, an unstoppable force.
Vista Security agent, Ben, is just the right amount of tough and tender. Raised with five sisters, the need to protect MJ and her beautiful foster baby, Angelina, comes naturally. However, Ben quickly finds out it’s difficult to protect someone who doesn’t want protection. Especially skilled agent MJ, whose body and soul were wounded beyond repair by the last man she trusted.
Forced into one last assignment by a Vista Security boss who threatened to foil baby Angelina’s adoption, MJ wants nothing more than to bring in her target (in this case, her own agent-gone-rogue sister, Tasha) and hurry back home to the chubby, waiting arms of her little Angel. But the road home is more than she bargained for. A dangerous, dizzying thrill-ride, filled with gasps, stomach-flips, and pages of unpredictable twists and turns.
I recommend Diana Layne’s ‘Trust No One,’ to readers of all genres, book lovers one and all who enjoy edge of the seat action, written by an author who gets it right every time.
I actually read a sample of this book on www.the-cheap.net for a contest where they were giving away an ebook copy of it. I enjoyed the sample so much that I just had to finish the entire book. "Trust No One" is the story about the adventures of a 'retired' spy and the sister that she was raised with after a horrific accident changed both their lives forever. MJ's character really catches your attention with her willingness to do whatever it takes to protect those that she loves. This book was full of surprises and it always kept me guessing what was going to happen next. The plot moved along and never seemed to stall. Although the book was a little bit on the long side, I don't feel like anything could have been left out. I can't wait to read more books by Layne.
Three orphans taken in by a trained agent. Raised to be agents. The one male lands up in a Russian prison. His biological sister turns to murdering senators. The third child, MJ leaves the job after being betrayed by the love of her life and she adopts a baby. She has a picture perfect life. Until.... The perfect mix of action, romance and intrigue!
Trust No One was a fantastic read. This is one of the best romantic suspense books I read in 2012. Diana Layne delivers a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You root for the herione through the book and you want her to have her happily ever after even if she does not end up with the hero. I look forward to more books in this series.
The romance part of the book was very predictable. The mystery part was never really resolved. I finished it just hoping it would get better. It had lots of potential, jyst didn't pull it off.
This is the second book of d Layne I have read absolutely engrossed l loved all the main characters I will now follow with book 3 cannot wait to start reading it
Trust No One represents the genre which I've been reading lately. Officially, that genre is called Romantic Suspense. Unofficially, I call it Badass Women, and this book is a perfect example. I've got several more of this type of book on my Kindle so I think the genre is growing in popularity.
Maybe because of the rise of ebooks -- and maybe because of the increasing number of women who are pissed off at their jobs, their bosses, their significant others, their kids, the economy, and maybe just the world in general.
Some vicarious butt-kicking from the heroine of the villains-- usually men who have "done 'em wrong" -- may just help women readers keep their sanity. (Of course, I'm a chick who liked The Long Kiss Goodnight starring Geena Davis, a prime example of the Badass Women genre.)
Blurb It
Spy MJ Thornberg survives betrayal of the worst kind as well as a murder attempt and rediscovers her humanity in the form of a baby she adopts. Like many survivors before her, she's "gone to Texas" to discover a better life.
If a small Texas town full of caring, but nosy, citizens, a cute baby, and a job you love won't cure what ails you, then I don't know what will. (Apparently, the author, fellow Texan Diana Layne, and I share that philosophy.)
Small town tranquility is shattered when Ben, another spy with just as much baggage as MJ, shows up to bring her in for one more job. Ben is the ideal man -- gorgeous, sexy, smart, understanding, kind, and honest. (If I wasn't married to a man like that, I'd think Ben was a myth, but men like that really do exist.)
If you like women who can take a beating like the defunct 24's Jack Bauer and Die Hard's John McClain; classic fast cars described in loving detail; guns where almost all the details are right; rising suspense, and a truckload of sexual tension, then this book is for you. Hang onto your Stetson and settle in for a fun read!
I really loved this book. It caught my eye to begin with when I was searching for a strong female lead who had dealings with the CIA, FBI, etc. Trust No One kept me on my toes in the beginning of the book all the way to the end and I could have been happier. Trust No One is about MJ, of whom we meet in the beginning is working for Vista, a security like firm that contracts through the military/CIA/etc. She is on a job when she is with her partner of whom turns on her.
Later on we meet Angel who is her adopted daughter who MJ would do anything for in order to keep her safe. Now retired, she is working as a mechanic at a local shop. Mysteriously, we find Ben meeting MJ looking for her sister Tasha. As we read on we find what is actually happening. A story web of lies, hatred, and love I find myself so torn up that the book ended so well. I really wished it would have gone one!.
Loved, loved, loved this book!! The suspense is there, the romance is there. It's definitely not as predictable as you'd think it would be. The main characters are tough & funny & quirky & have just enough emotional baggage to pull you in & before you know it your totally engulfed in the story unfolding. Love the writing style of this author, Diana Layne, Was pleasantly surprised that the language was very mild & the content was mainly PG-13 when the author could have very easily thrown it into the just another Rated-R spy novel. Thank you Ms Layne....will definitely recommend & look for more to read from you!!
I really enjoyed this book! MJ has retired from Vista, but Ben is sent to convince her to come out of retirement when her sister starts killing former senators. MJ and Ben were both complex characters who had difficulty trusting due to issues from their pasts. Tasha and MJ were raised as sisters, and it was great to watch that bond develop throughout the story. This book had just the right amounts of mystery, suspense, and romance!
I has previously read THE GOOD DAUGHTER, which I believe was the prequel to this series, but it didn't seem to directly relate to this book. However, I think that will become more clear as the series continues.
A delightful suspense romance book with a fast-moving story line. MJ and Tasha, international security agent step-sisters have suffered being orphaned and must pursue the reason for their parents' deaths. This leads one to love, and a few to kidnappings, plus lots of shootings. The female agents seem to escape several life threatening situations through miracles of cunning, professionalism, and allure. The romance is sweet, saucy, and sarcastic, and kept me hoping for a good outcome.
Brava Diana Layne! I am looking forward to your next suspense-romance.
This was a fairly good suspenseful spy thriller, even though rather predictable. It kept me hooked enough to make me want to finish, but it did drag on and on at times. I really thought the sex-filled capture scenes were a little overdone. I got this as a free ebook through BookBub so that made it worthwhile. The ebook version was filled with grammatical and punctuation errors, words transposed, and even some words left out, which made it seem very amateurish. Not sure if this occurred in hard copy as well.
I really enjoyed the last book I read by Diana Layne, so I was looking forward to reading "Trust No One". It didn't disappoint. You have some fabulous, strong female characters that manage to get themselves out of a few messes because the men keep underestimating them. I also liked the main male character who ends up trying to help them even when they are trying to prevent his involvement. It's a great story with plenty of excitement until the end. I can't wait to see what happens to Tasha next.
well written, believable. but a few loose ends. Would have liked some resolution regarding the BOLO, and how the sisters were in hot water one minute and suddenly they were not. There was no disclosure to Ben about the papers that Tasha found, or explanation regarding her actions because of their contents. I realize that thea story is to be continued, but these lose ends (there are others) make me feel the story is unfinished and needs closure to aid in un
Wow. I absolutely loved this book. The second in the Vista series this one is about Ben and Mj. Mj is trying to adopt a little girl after retiring from Vista after a mission gone bad a year ago. Her sort of sister goes rogue and Ben forces Mj to help find her and figure out what's going on. Enter the fun and major sexual tension! Definitely enjoyed the depth to the characters in this book. This is the second of Layne's books I've read and I'm absolutely looking forward to more.
I wish I could give this book ten stars. A female assassin-spy, who had almost almost died during a mission, is forced out of retirement to assist in the capture of another female spy who has gone rogue and is on a killing spree. I was glued to this book from the first page and read it in one sitting. I would recommend this book to those readers who enjoy suspense and fast moving action.
An OK rom-sus. The action becomes a little Keystone Kops for me, but the good guys win in the end. And you know that if there's a baby involved, the suspense can't be too hairy. There's an actual hero, even if the protagonists don't really think so. It's good that there are a few loose ends, possibly portending another book.
Couldn't finish it. If there was a book category called sexual tension I never would have started it. Pages and pages of sexual tension. Too bad, for me it could have been a good read without all that sexual tension.
Trust No One is definitely an awesome read. Once I started reading it, I could not stop. Full of great characters. Great story. Well written. Full of twists and action. Truly a great thriller. Definitely recommended.
This was a fast paced, action-filled thriller, with strong female characters. Filled with spies, toddlers, betrayal, mothers, and just enough sex to make things interesting, this was a quick, satisfying read.
Very nice plot, fantastic characters. The story is very well conducted. It's not a linear story, as the characters remember important things to our understanding. The sequence is full of high and low situations. Great book!
This is really a five-star book, but I didn't like the semi-sister character and thought our heroine should have been more leery of throwing in her lot with her. That issue aside, the book is well-written romantic suspense with good characters.
This book really holds your interest with back to back suspense. Always on the edge of your seat, it keeps you wanting to turn the next page to see what is going on with the characters. The plot is twisting and turning in different directions.
I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and interesting. Although not complicated, it was pretty predictable, it kept my interest till the last page. I would recommend this book.
