Piri Thomas (born Juan Pedro Tomas September 10, 1928 in Spanish Harlem in New York City) was a Puerto Rican-Cuban who was influential in the Nuyorican Movement as a writer and poet.
I thought the Amigo Brothers had a great plot to a possible outcome. The friends were great fighters, but had to fight each other in the end. Even after their fight they put everything beside them. I feel like it could have more action and drama, but overall it was a decent book.
In the short story "Amigo Brothers" by Piri Thomas, The character, Antonio and Felix are boxers. They are both strong athletes who show their community that friendship is more important than winning.
First of all, Atonio and Felix doesn't quit "Antonio and Felix trained everyday together"(PG.5) before the day fight they still ran together but they didn't talk and they didn't even look at each other.
Amigos go solo fight each other. they talk to each other should be like we've never meet. Felix have a deal with Antonio it the Amigo brothers were not ashamed to hug. but after the hug they ran home alone.
The math were start. First round had start Antonio hit felix head with a right. now is final round they both pounded. Felix eye was swollen and Antonio nose was blood cane out.
I this story i can understand Felix and Antonio they care about Friendship more than they care about winning.
amigo brothers told an interesting friend ship to boxers from the same gym brothers that had to fight each other to see who would go on to fight in the golden glove tournament. to brother fighting for the one thing they have trained there whole lives for.
The short story "Amigo Brothers" by Piri Thomas put for discussion the dilemma which the main characters had. Two teenage' boxers, two friends had to fight in the tournament. Both of them dreamt twinner. They also wanted to best each other.
The author grew up in New York City. This story takes place in the neighborhood populated with Puerto Ricans and African Americans, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The author described the area where the conversation took place, on the river bank across the city, they stood in front of the railway from Brooklyn to another part of New York City.
The story carried the idea of being honest in their intentions. The friends fought with each other, but through it all, they kept their friendship intact. How was this possible ... a reader can know about it from the story. The story is short and deductive.
I've learned never to underestimate the value of little things. This great short story and 13-year old brilliant boy I discussed it with assert this.
I coincidently read it for teaching purposes. The writer represents one of human's purist relationships, friendship, in his two characters; Felix and Antonio. Like any other relation, the writer puts hurdles to their relation to test it. The two characters are boxers who have to fight against each other in the final game to win the championship they both have long dreamt and worked hard to win it. Living the internal and external conflict the characters have between choosing gives suspense to keep reading the story. However, discussing it with a boy with a fresh 13-year old mind was more overwhelming.
According to him, the winner of the game is a loser and the loser in the game is the true winner. That is why Felix and Antonio decided to lose in order to win their friednship. He said: "Miss Dima, true friendships always win." He was true.
"Antonio won the lightweight championship. In the text, paragraph 92 says that the winner would be chosen based of that round. Also in paragraph 91, its says "The referee signaled the ring doctor to check the fighters out.He did so gave his okay." Based on that they were both okay so the fighting caused in the last round would decide the winner. Then trough out paragraphs 93-97, Tony threw the first punch, forced Felix against the ropes, then both of them were hitting but neither of them fell to the ground. Even after the bell had been sounded, they were still both fighting. So in the end I belive that Antonio won because he had the advantage of the first hit."
Antonio won the lightweight championship. In the text it says "Antonio came out fast, charging across the ring. Felix braced himself but couldn't ward off the barrage of punches." It proves that Antonio won because Antonio was throwing lots of punches at Felix who wasn't given a chance to punch back before the bell was hit. (p93)
Due to being quite behind on my reviews for the texts that I have finished, I am only offering star ratings for the handful of short stories that I have most recently read. I know, it hurts me too.
I liked this book because it shows how two people get mad at each other but realize how important their friendship is. The best part of the book is when Antonio blows Felix. The theme of the book is Friendship is important. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in boxing.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a pretty good book. I think Antonio won because Felix had so many injurys. He got punched lots of times to. I liked the part when they both walk away from being told who wins. I wish they would not have done it becuacse i really wanted to see who ACTUALLY wins.
"Felix won the lightweight championship. In the text it says Antonio a bit too eager, moved in too close, and Felix had him entangled into a rip-roaring, punching toe-to-toe slugfest that brought the whole crowd screaming to its feet. Also in the text it says Felix lashed out with a haymaker right off the ghetto streets."
I'm finished with Amigo Brothers: Felix won the lightweight championship. In the text Felix trapped Tony across against the ropes, jabbing his mid-section, ...series of left to rights with a strong right..., ... entangled into a rip-roaring, punching toe-to-toe slugfest.
In the text Amigo Brothers, I feel and think that Antonio beat Felix and I'll explain. Antonio got in more hits than Felix did. "Antonio struggled to get on his feet, got up, ducked, and threw a smashing right that dropped Felix flat on his back".
I think that they both won the fight because they them both won one time at the end they said "Felix and Antonio was past hearing." they both lost so they both win.
In the story "Amigo Brothers" nobody actually won the fight because in passage "103" it says "The announcer turned to point to the winner and found himself alone. Arm in arm, the champions had already left the ring."
In the story amigo brothers felix and Antonio are brothers. In my opinion i thin Antonio won but they didn't call that he won because both of them where gone. The proof i have that he won is because Antonio has reach and hit him the most with a lot of head strikes.
Antonio won the fight because he had more hits to me but they both won the fight they both where real with each other. Feelix won the first round and Antonio won the second fight. '' Antonio and Felix both bowed gracefully and then raised there arms"
Awesome story . True friendship . I liked the last scene after they fought also they were still friends . Hope I have a same friend like them . So happy to read the story of such great friendship
This short story revolves around two amateur boxers who are from the same neighborhood. They have a fight planned, that both must win in order to move onto bigger and better things. The two fighters face the difficult task of trying to maintain their friendship, even though they must compete with each other. Their different fighting styles symbolize their unique character types, one more rash than the other. In the end, the main idea of this short story is not based around which fighter wins the bout, it is formed on what happens to the boys relationship. Before the results are even calculated, the boxers have walked off, friends who do not care about the outcome of the fight. This story is a tale about friendship and finding out your true identity. The two fighters, in the end, figure out that their friendship is more important than the outcome of the fight. They adjust their priorities, and are better off as a result. I found an activity online that works well with this book, called a compare and contrast storyboard. http://www.storyboardthat.com/storybo... This strategy is similar to Gallagher's "Niemeyer charts," but it has more of a compare and contrast aspect. It is the perfect strategy for students to build on their understanding of how the character's identities are created and how they change by the end of the story.
