The fiction story “Time’s reach” by Janet Lorimer mentioned about finding the lost computer of a traveler who came from the future. Yet, one of the characters, Maggie Dalton, behaved in ways that made her appear uncivilized.
One example is that Maggie was crotchety and crude. One moment, “they heard a loud knock on the front door”(p.9). She was badly behaved to knock on people’s doors. The next moment, “before Andy could say anything, the woman walked into the room”. “Okay Doctor Crandall”, she said. “I want those papers!”(p.9). At first, she should apologize for the loud knock, or at least she should greet the people she wanted to see to show a courteous and nice attitude. Instead, she walked into people’s rooms without permission. This behavior of hers did not show her politeness, but unkindness.
Maggie also was a stalker and a robber. “When this person stepped into the light, Gail saw that it was Maggie Dalton”(p.12). Gail saw Maggie stood on the road at night and kept looking at Gail’s house. Other than that, when Gail was looking around at the museum, “she turned around and saw Maggie standing behind her”(p.36). When Gail and Colin left the museum, “Gail spotted Maggie’s car”(p.60). That woman was following them. She followed people many times like a stalker. Another thing is that she broke into people’s house. When Gail ask Colin whether he broke into her house, Colin shook his head and answered that “That must have been Maggie”(p.58). Maggie burst into Andy and Gail’s house when they were out. She tried to steal Dr. Dalton’s papers.
Furthermore, Maggie’s actions also showed that she was impatient and greedy. “Money’s about the only thing Maggie ever thinks of”(p.11). She was trying to find the thing that her father had found. “My father told me it worth a lot of money”(p.38), she said that to Gail with her bright eyes. She asked Gail to read her father’s papers and tell her all what she knew. She asked not to try anything on he own because she was afraid that Gail would have that “priceless” thing.
Throughout the story, Maggie appeared with a lot of actions of an uncouth and crude woman. Because of that character of Maggie, the author built the story with lots of suspenses.
