". . . I never knew that just by being alive we touch and are touched by the feelings of those around us."

What. A. Volume!!!

First off though, can I just take a moment to say that I LOVE the double-page spread for chapter 14? Those two pages are FIREEEEEE!!

In fact, there are A LOT of really epic panels and pages where I just had to stop reading and appreciate the artwork. Not only that, but I caught myself more than once going back and just looking at it again because it's so good!

Honestly, the artwork is what helps me not hate the love rival. LOL! He has an *epic* character design with this passionate personality that is a really really nice contrast to our main characters. Granted, that is not to say I approved of his actions because that I did not. However, he is so cooly drawn that I found myself watching to see what he would do next more than once. Ha! Definitely an interesting feeling!

Seriously though, this volume was very very very good! I would have expected there being a love rival that there would be some unnecessary drama, but because of the hate and prejudice that deeply saturates events, this honestly makes everything extremely compelling. You see things from a human perspective of what they endured because of the beastkind while on the flip side we see our King be able to break that said human's generalization of all beastkind with incredible action. Even outside of the love triangle (though I had to laugh at Amit voicing how its the first time she saw one and that whole conversation LOL), it continues to show how deep the prejudice is between both races and how I think Sari is going to really help show what unity and harmony can look like.

I really really really dislike Anubis and him playing what seems like devil's advocate! Just ughhhhhhh!

But as always, the bonus comic was fun and hilarious!! Super enjoyed it! LOL!

Overall, another really really good volume!

After three volumes I can honestly say this is one that I'm going to have to keep up with. It's just too good, plus the art is stunning.

Nearly lost a star because of unneeded drama from a "rival" but fortunately it wrapped up in a single volume. Also, we've confirmed that Sariphi is 15, thank goodness, so again, looking forward to the next volume.

And I really love the "rescue" trope being turned on its head. There need to be more stories where the maiden actually befriends her "guardian" (dragon, wolf, centaur, whatever) and then gets upset when she's "rescued" from her calm life.

This was a nice addition to the series. We meet a new character, Ilya, who starts off kind of annoying but improves by the end of the volume. I wonder when he’ll appear next? We see more of Sariphi’s past and tensions between the beasts and humans through him, which is interesting. On another note, Amit is officially one of my top three characters (after the mains) and this volume just reaffirmed my love for her. :) All in all, this was a really good volume, with an entertaining plot, nice art, and great characters. 4.5 stars.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and one more time, YES. Finally, we have a romance manga series that introduces a childhood love interest that appears to set up a love triangle, but is firmly rejected in the end. Thank you, Tomofuji, for being one of the few mangaka to have your female lead know who she loves and not waver from that love just because her childhood friend comes to "rescue" her and confesses his feelings. I have so much respect for this series and am so pleased that it turned out this way. I love the relationship between Leonhart and Sariphi, it is just so pure and sweet. Leonhart is such a gentleman and truly wants what will make Sariphi happy, it makes me melt. Princess Amit got more screen time this volume and it was great. She is such a sweet, loving, and polite woman and her friendship with Sariphi is so pure it makes me smile. I loved seeing her pushed down her shyness and told Leonhart to go after Sariphi when he had his doubts, it showed how much she cares for Sariphi as well as speaks to how observant she is about Sariphi's feelings. I truly adore this series and each new volume makes me fall more in love with it. Can't wait for volume four!

Love hurts. Hate kills.

This volume introduces Sariphi's childhood friend Ilya who has come for revenge after hearing she was taken for sacrifice. However seeing she is still alive fills him with hope as deep as the hatred he has built over the years for the beastfolk. This volume will show us obsession, blind hatred, sacrifice, heart break, and to a degree forgiveness as Ilya and Leonhart ultimately challenge each other for the sake of Sariphi. Be sure to read this volume to see some great character development as this incredible series continues to build a cast of people no matter their race and show how many have potential to grow and evolve (mostly thanks to Sariphi's influence.)

In Summary

The story shifts from subjecting Sariphi to magical trials to putting Leonhart through the emotional wringer. The introduction of a human boy in love with Sariphi means Leonhart gets subjected to the same insecurities Sariphi suffered when the beast princesses showed up. Watching two guys compete over a girl usually adds excitement to a romance, but Ilya clearly never stands a chance of winning Sariphi’s affections so it falls short.

The Review

Previously, Anubis had presented Sariphi with a list of requirements in order to gain acceptance as queen. By the end of Volume 2, she accomplished the first task, and I assumed Volume 3 would usher in Task Number Two. Well…I was wrong. Instead of continuing to have Sariphi prove her worth to the skeptics, it takes a big detour by introducing Ilya, a human swordsman who’s in love with Sariphi. In fact, the entire volume is taken up by this young man’s efforts to bring Sariphi back to the human realm.

The sudden appearance of this childhood friend is somewhat jarring. Up till now, Sariphi’s never mentioned human friends of any sort and behaved as if Leonhart’s palace was the first place she experienced kindness. After she got kicked out of the human village in Volume 1, she couldn’t come up with a single person to help her. As such, Ilya feels like an afterthought.

Even if you can get over his abrupt introduction, Ilya’s hold over Sariphi’s heart isn’t strong enough to result in a real love triangle. The past that the two humans share do cause Leonhart emotional angst, but it’s equivalent to Sariphi’s self-doubt during the beast princess arc. Sariphi cares about Ilya, but she’s not attracted to him. In fact, even though Ilya’s love is patently clear to everyone else, Sariphi is too innocently dense to recognize it until he bluntly tells her halfway through the volume.

Because Sariphi and Leonhart’s bond is too strong for Ilya to create genuine romantic tension, Tomofuji-sensei gives him a tortured past to stir things up. If Leonhart is the broody restrained type, Ilya is the broody hothead. While Ilya’s personal tragedies arouse some sympathy and also shed light on human prejudices against beasts, his temper results in him roughing up Sariphi more than once, and I am not a fan of men manhandling their supposed love interests. As such, when the arc comes to a close, I’m quite happy to see Ilya go.

Extras include embedded author’s notes and the bonus manga, “The Beast Princess and the Regular King.”

Today's post is on Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Vol. 3 by Yū Tomofuji. It is 192 pages long and is published by Yen Press. As it is the third volume in the series, you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes slow burn love stories, political shojo, and fantasy. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main characters, Sariphi and The King. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the manga- Intent on avenging Sariphi's sacrifice, her childhood friend Ilya infiltrates the royal palace, only to discover her alive and well. When he demands her returns, Sariphi refuses him outright, driving Ilya to make a desperate choice to abduct her from right under the nose of the beast king! But instead of giving chase, the king hesitates, paralyzed by doubt... Will Sariphi and Leonhart's story come to an abrupt close...?

Review- This volume gives the reader a bigger look into the human world and how beasts are seen. Ilya is the sole survivor of a beast raid on his village but he hates all beasts because of it. So when he discovers that Sariphi has been given to the Beast Kingdom, he will do anything to get revenge or free her. The most important thing is that Leonhart, as the King, is keeping the human world safe by controlling and, when needed, punishing the beasts. A good volume and it adds to both character and world development. I look forward to reading the next volume.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

I didn't like the new character one bit. He seemed abusive, and what looked like him leading towards attempted rape with a 15 year old girl while he is 18 is uh... concerning. I didnt like that one bit. However, I liked the added depth to the kings character, and seeing how brutal the beasts can be. We haven't seen the brutalness of the beasts before, only that they seemed innocent and the victims in this war. But seeing it from a humans side, and seeing that some beasts CAN in fact be absolute brutal and even eat humans is really fascinating.

It really shows that some beasts can be brutal and coldhearted. While some beasts are completely different and is very gentle natured.

Just like humans.

Not the worst romantic rival arc in the entire world. When the camera zoomed in on the bruises she had gotten, I had hoped the author would further acknowledge his physical abuse of Sari, as well as what looked like was leading up to attempted rape... I find Shojo / manga in general tends to lump this stuff into the "it's romantic isn't it?!" category...

That aside, I appreciated the deepening of the king's character; that he really wants Sari herself to be happy, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. It's good to have that reversed or reciprocated, since usual Sari is the one playing that card.

(I want to see these two grow old together!! Granny age Sari would be toooo cute)

A good arc that focuses on Sariphi and her past in the human kingdom before she became a sacrifice. As we learn about one of the childhood friends and focusing on how humans feel about the Beastmen. It was a good story that also felt a bit tragic as we learn that Ilya, Sariphi's friend, is still suffering and shows one of other costs of war as he will never see Beastmen as anything but monsters and it is pretty well done and I do like that this plot line is not fixed because of a nice speech but it does start the process of this plotline being resolved later.

The third volume commences a new arc in the story, where we are introduced to the rival for the heroine's affections. Though it is over almost as soon as it begins. Regardless, it was wonderful to see another human in the story. Another with a tragic backstory that brought a tear to my eye. Heres hoping we see Ilya again!

A rival for Sariphi's affections has arrived. Love corner activated! I enjoyed this volume but it did feel a little rushed. I like Ilya as a character and I hope we see more of him in the future. I did appreciate the progress this volume made in bringing Sariphi and Leonhart towards being on the same page about thei feelings.

Childhood friend Ilya shows up to rescue Sariphi from the Beasts.

3.5 stars This looked like it was going to head into love triangle territory so I'm glad that Ilya has been put in the friendship box.

The tiny little end stories where Sariphi is the beast and all the other characters are human are absolutely adorable.

I didn’t like the newly introduced character, in how he was connected to Sariphi. However, I’d liked the complexities of his character arc that occurred in this volume. He also helped the King realize he needs to be secure in his relationship with Sariphi, as well as have some moments of jealousy, which was really interesting to see/read.

I’m sure that it says somewhere in the actual story…. But, how old are these characters? In the side panel of this volume, there was a little tidbit that Ilya is 18 while Sariphi is 15, but how old are the beasts?

Also, she is (potentially) 15 years old, so keep your hands to yourself! (╯°

So much fun

An enjoyable forty minute romantic read that puts me in mind of the old manga ‘from far away’ with its pacing and drawing style for some odd reason. Either way I recommend this manga as a great place to stop and relax.
