The late middle ages. England’s king seeks to recover the French lands of his ancestor William the Conqueror and claim the continental throne. France’s king aspires to seize the remainder of his royal vassal’s lands and retain his throne. So begins the Hundred Years’ War, the backdrop against which the formidable Wulfriths of the AGE OF CONQUEST and AGE OF FAITH series continue their tale. Though Lady Dangereuse of the Wulfriths may not have loved, she has certainly lost. Widowed young, she is devoted to managing her lands while helping her young son overcome the trauma of losing his sire. But when the injured knight who rejected her betrothal years ago falls into her hands, she turns her efforts to gaining the confession of one who may be more responsible for the violent death of her husband than she. If that means detaining him, so be it. As she seeks the truth of what deprived her son of a father, she is unprepared for suffering inflicted on her people by those intent on keeping her unwilling guest from delivering intelligence to the King of England. And more unprepared when a heart gone cold warms to her husband's hated rival. Mission compromised, Sir Rhys de Arell finds himself pursued from France to England and into the path of a lady whose misplaced kiss saw her wed to a man he once counted a friend. Though he has put the death of her deceitful husband behind him, she has not—and believes a reckoning is due. Injured and in the power of one who is owed an apology but not a confession, Rhys is unsettled when her son becomes attached to him, and more when attraction for the lady leads to a kiss that feels far from misplaced. With his pursuers wreaking havoc on her lands to recover what could save English lives, can he salvage his mission as well as prevent her son from losing his mother? And if such treacherous depths cannot be navigated, how is he to walk away from the lady a second time? From USA Today Bestselling author Tamara Leigh, the fourth book in the Age of Honor series unites the Wulfrith family with the De Arell’s of Baron of Blackwood, the third book in The Feud series. Tamara Leigh is a master at her craft, creating a unique medieval tale that keeps the pages turning to make for another 5 star read. There is no way to describe the feeling of reading a story by Leigh, other than to say that it is an entirely immersive experience that will have you invested and keep you coming back for more.

In Dangerous, is the story of the formidable Lady Dangereuse of the Wulfriths and the honorable knight Sir Rhys De Arell. I loved these two characters. Dangerous was layered lead. A strong-willed woman and protective mother, I loved seeing her vulnerability develop and her walls come down around Rhys. Her determination to forge a good life for her young son as a single mother was relatable and was the driving force behind her choices. Rhys De Arell might have won the spot for a favorite leading man in their series. Rhys was the embodiment of what it meant to be a knight trained by the Wulfriths. He was honorable, and fast to safeguard those in need, no matter their situation. He balanced out Dangereuse with his quiet, but strong, presence and was a great father figure to Sebastian. I loved the family themes in this book, not only the small family being formed from the main characters but also the cameos featuring the Wulfriths and the blended De Arell family, it was a treat.

I enjoyed the fact that they had a complex previous history which left both with the question, “What if?”. Their history was further complicated by a tragedy that affected Dangereuse and her young son, Sebastian. These points added great tension to their developing feelings and interactions. The mutual respect they had for each other as individuals was also interesting to see. Their honesty also left no room for unnecessary conflicts and allowed a hard-won trust to form. The chemistry and pacing of their relationship were perfect, I couldn’t wait for them to acknowledge the attraction!

As for the plot, this is was kept me hooked. I could not wait to find out the story behind what really happened to Dangereuse’s husband and find out more about Rhys's mission for the King. The secondary characters add to the plot and keep the momentum of the story. The twists and turns it took made kept me on my toes, guessing what would happen next, only to take me by surprise in the last 100 pages. Action, deceit, suspense, and tragedy, it can’t be better if I asked. The introduction of new characters has me anxious for the next book!

A great addition to the Age of Honor series, that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoyed the medieval genre.

*This book is part of the “Age of honor” series and should be read in order to avoid spoilers.
*Features characters from “The Feud” series. This series does not have to be read before to understand the story.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Worth the wait

I found Tamara's books a couple of months ago, and I quickly read through all of them. Upon finishing the third in the Age of Honor series, it felt like forever waiting for Dangerous (though in reality it was not). thus and Dangereuse may be a new favorite of Tamara's couples - which is fitting. I love the story of Rhys' parents as well. I highly recommend this book. It has just the right mix of chemistry, longing, conflict, etc. I can't wait for Warin's story in August!

I loved visiting the Wulfriths and their crew again. I delayed starting this book for a couple reasons. First, as is usual, I knew once I started it would be over too soon (which was justified, since I finished it within a few days of starting), and second, I didn’t know if I was in the mood for a medieval tale at the moment; I’ve been reading/listening to mostly contemporary lately and didn’t know if I wanted to jump that far back on time. Well, that worry was for naught. Within a few pages I was fully invested in the story of Dangereuse and Rhys and what pulled them apart then back together. The relationship building felt natural and realistic. I loved getting to know little Sebastian better and seeing beloved characters from the rest of the series pop in as well. I was hoping Rémy’s story would be next, especially at the beginning of this tale, but am now just as excited for Warin’s and that of she who is to become his lady. Until Autumn, family Wulfrith!

Apparently the trick to staving off a reading slump for me is reading almost exclusively historical romances, but hey as long as it works.

Full spoilers!

I'll be honest, when I read the blurb for this I thought I knew how this would progress. The female protagonist is going to mistakenly claim she's been wronged and demand retribution from the actually wronged male protagonist, and miscommunication and mistrust will cycle through the whole the whole story. And that is not what this was, much to my delight.

First of all I really liked how this story unfolded. From the outset we get all the background information to understand the characters and their dynamics (rather than starting in the present then delving into flashbacks) and I found this to be really effective. All spoilers. We immediately understand that initially Dangereuse's (Dange from hereon) dad wanted her to marry his first Squire, Rhys. We get that Rhys didn't mind Dange but he didn't want to be married so soon. He wanted to earn his stripes, go to war, gain acclaim, all of those things. It's also clear that Rhys isn't being painted as selfish or even wrong for not wanting to be quickly married, it just wasn't something he was ready for at that stage in his life.

We then get the backstory of how Benoit (Dange's now deceased husbande) schemed to marry her in lieu of Rhys, by cheating in a joust. This set up the friction between Benoit and Rhys, with the latter hating Rhys (and it's clear this is out of pure jealously and insecurity). We then make a 2 year jump where we see that Dange is not the happiest in her marriage. Her husband, Benoit is incessantly insecure to the point of being jealous of their actual child. It all culminates when he loses a joust, accuses Rhys of cheating and then in a drunken rage aggresses upon Dange and their child, which leads to him falling on a dagger (and Rhys is there all throughout). This is all captured in the first few chapters, so it's really excellent groundwork. Imagine not getting all of this and we spend the whole book being drip-fed exactly why Dange hates Rhys, or why she's so overprotective over her son. I cannot stress enough how much this book subverted every expectation I had going in all for the better.

Okay.

So when we catch up to the present Rhys shows up on Dange's doorstep injured and she determines to save him and also keep him away from her son yada yada yada

In terms of characters Dange could easily have been written to be an annoying character, but she was so sympathetic and understandable. Even as she was initially blaming Rhys in part for her husband's death, it's clear to the reader that this is her defence mechanism. For her to come to terms with the fact that her husband, and the father of her child, was not entirely a good person is a tough pill to swallow. Let alone acknowledging that said father of her child nearly killed said child, and very well might have without intervention, is difficult to confront. It's better to blame a third party and protect the innocence of her child's father than to face that truth. This was clear through Dange's characterisation while she herself skirted around these understandings. Brilliant. And it's also what made these characters, and story, easy to invest in.

I realise I'm rambling so in broader strokes, the things I liked:
- I liked Rhys as well, solid character who was easy to root for.
- I also really liked seeing Dange being a parent and her relationship with her son Sabastian.
- I thought the overall plot of this book, with the French/English spy easy to follow (something I sometimes struggle with with Leigh's other books), and it had reasonably high stakes.
- I also thought the pacing of this was very good, the story really did move and relationship development wise it didn't feel like we were stuck in one state for too long.

That being said the reason this isn't 5 stars is that once And I skimmed a litttle bit.

But this might be one of my favourite entries from leigh, very enjoyable.

I have said this many times, however, I’ll say it again. WHENEVER Tamara Leigh writes a book, I will read it and know I will be taken to a place that I don’t want to come back from. Her stories leave me with so much to feel, and think about, it’s hard to put into words.
Tamara Leigh is a skilled storyteller. Each of her books is an invitation to travel back in time to an era we can only imagine. She brings this medieval world to life. From the pageantry of the customs to the action of the fighting, as well as the language of the time, there is nothing left amiss.
It's an enchanting story about love, honor, friendship, loyalty, and justice. A story where you as the reader will sit on the edge of your seat until you see what happens and how it all plays out. It has an underlining theme of loss, wrongs made to the innocent, finding justice, forgiveness, and cherished love. It’s a story that shows the struggles that go with tragedy and the ripple effect it can have on others, as well as finding healing from those events.
I love how this author writes. Tamara Leigh creates stunning worlds where your mind is captured and entertained. You don’t want to stop reading because there is so much going on.
I'm now waiting patiently to pick up the next books in the series.
This author knows how to write books that will stay with you long after you’ve closed the pages and put the book down.

I always listen to Tamara Leigh's books on Audible because of the French and Old English dialect. I loved when Mary Sarah Agliotta read them, she has a beautiful voice and can do wonderful voices that were distinct for each character. The man that has read this series is so monotone, my mind starts wandering and I lose my train of thought. The story is good and if you can READ it, that would be the way to go rather than listening. If you have not listened to her books in the past, you may not find these as bad as I do.

Disappointed

It’s a good book, I just don’t find Dangerouse interesting at all. Not surprisingly that her book ended being a set up for Vianne and Warin, can’t wait to read their book!

Also disappointed because of the direction and Remy’s relationship took. Big sigh. Skimmed a lot. I don’t skim Tamara’s books, I’m usually invested in the most trivial details but not his one. Looking forward to the next one and hoping it doesn’t disappoint like this one did.

Finally

In the previous books we saw Dangerous as a dark brooding broken woman and I am so happy to finally read her story and know where she came from and have a happy ending for her and her boy.

Spivey

An intriguing story of finding love amid trials, truths with time, and hope for a brighter future. This is a complex family with each finding happiness down seemingly different paths. Again, as much talk is often in the bedroom, there is a little spice but kept PG.

DANGEROUS READ!....if you need a set bedtime! Don't plan on being able to stop reading and catching some shut-eye especially the last half of the book. The first half had the sparks of fighting attraction and the second had all the thrills of an action movie, with the finale being a wonderful love story getting a second chance and making the most of it.
"You are drink." (Read the book you'll know why this had me swooning....AAAAHHHHHH!!!)
