Dick King-Smith
330 books307 followersDick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.
Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.
Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.

A story about a spider who has a problem with her legs!! Plenty of illustrations to engage and help a developing reader through the book.

Emily's Legs by DKS is an emotional roller coaster of a book, suitable for newly confident readers.
Following DKSs other classic books, Emily's legs is the story of a young spider, outcast by family and other spiders for being different. Instead of rolling over in sadness and depression, she decides to deal with it as best she can and in the end finds acceptance from others first before being loved as she is by a male spider.
This story is rich in P4C lessons and morals. The initial idea was that being GAT, she is disliked by other spiderlings for excelling and is also bored for lack of a real test. The story develops into being singled out, even by her parents, for being different and treated badly by those around her. Instead of feeling sorry for herself she showed resolved to "show them" and overcame death / difficulty. Finally there is acceptance by the other mini beasts in the hoover bag before she falls in love with a male spider who finds her beautiful as she is.
Being a story about spiders and their 8 legs - lessons on mini beasts would be ideal - writing a non-chronological report / fact file in English may be nice as well as Topic lessons investigating bugs and their natural environments/habitats.

Chosen for less confident readers in year 5. It made me laugh and there’s lots we can talk about. The ending is hilarious.

Horrible soppy love story about spiders. What's not to love? Perfectly balanced anthropomorphism of the critters in question, laugh out loud fun, mutant spiders with ten legs and zero friends; just really great fun all around.
