Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

I didn’t like this story as much as I expected to.
The story where a young h had to give up her child for adoption/is a surrogate mother/loses her child to kidnapping and then meets him/her years later always fascinates me.

It started out well enough but then gets bogged down as the two relationships – that of the h/son and the h/H – vied for space and importance and the author let them take the bit and run around.
Somewhat Shorter would have been lot sweeter here.

The h is okay but was too self-effacing to begin with. And then later on gets more involved with the H/romance bit than the son she’s lost but never forgot.
The teenage was confused and sweet but too sweet and clingy for a 16-year-old boy at times. He does throw a few tantrums but I’d have found more conflict from him as more believable.
The widowed and harried H was spot-on in the first half with his misgivings of losing his son to a stranger. But later on annoyed with his excessive push pull even after the exchange of ILYs.

I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. there are three main strong characters in this book to love and admire their struggles and values. Luke, widower of three years works as a Federal Public defender, father of a sixteen year old son Michael. Michael is aware that he is adopted and has asked to meet his birth mother. Meredith works as an assistant district attorney and is Michael's birth mother who has agreed to meet the son she never got to see or hold. There is so much emotion pack into this book.

It was a good book, very deep. It made me think a lot because there were several hard topics like adoption, teen pregnancies, rape, the meaning of justice.

The story is (almost) simple, a boy, whose adoptive mother is dead, decides to contact his birth mother. She was a teen when she had him and she had very hard condition at the time, so she was forced to give him in adoption. The father of the boy is very conflicted about his son and his birth mother. Besides they had similar works (both in law) but their experiences and their point of views about defense and justice are very very different.

A very good story, totally recommended.

I love reading books written by Kathryn Shay, she never disappoints. This book is definitely up on my favorites.

Lucas Rayburn, a federal public defender, is a widower of 3 years, who's now raising his 16 year old son, Michael, on his own. He adopted Michael when he was only 3 days old. Luke's mom and the baby's grandmother were both attorneys and best friends until the adoption went through. They forsake years of friendship so their children could be happy. When Michael asks to meet his biological mother, Luke panics. He's afraid to lose his son to his birth mother now that his wife is gone. So he sets up a meeting to meet the mom alone.

Meredith Hunter, now an assistant district attorney, was raped her freshman year of college by someone she was dating at the time. She was bullied by his public defender and it made Meredith look like she consented to having sex. She lost the case, but the guy was killed 3 months later while driving drunk. She went on to Princeton which was close to home and then law school. She lives with those demons from her past by not talking about it and burying it deep inside.

When she meets Luke Rayburn, she's nervous. Her parents never told Luke's parents why she gave up her baby. Only a few people know the truth her brother, her parents, and her best friend. Luke tries to intimidate Meredith hoping she won't want to meet Mike, but the lawyer in her refuses to show any vulnerability.

When she finally meets Michael soon after, he looks exactly like her. She soon falls in love with her son and his father and the feelings are mutual on both parts. She lets him get to know the real Meredith, who hasn't been seen in 17 years because she's been so afraid of trusting a man again.

But when Luke is given a case that is violent in sexual assault, he's worried that it will be a set-back on Meredith's progress. Will he give up his job for her? Would she even let him?

A must read.

I didn't initially realize that this was originally released as a Harlequin Super Romance. I acquired my digital, e-book copy in 2017; 20 years after the first release. Now, it's been updated to be more relevant with the 2020's. This was very interesting subject matter. I usually read the Kathryn Shay stories centered around fire fighters (as they are near and dear to my heart). This one has the two main characters (Luke Rayburn & Meredith Hunter) being on opposing sides of the law: a public defender and an assistant district attorney (ADA), respectively. Not only are they at opposing tables in court; she's the biological mother of Luke's adopted son, Michael.

When Michael asks to find his biological mother; Luke Rayburn is torn up inside. Luke will do almost anything when it comes to Michael's welfare. When Michael and Luke meet Meredith, Luke is resentful, cautious, and leery of Meredith's motives. He doesn't know the circumstances that drove Meredith to give her child up for adoption and feels that she may try to take his son from him (although he knows legally, that would be nearly impossible).

Luke and Meredith, initially adversarial, find themselves increasingly attracted to one-another. They won't give in to this attraction; because they don't want to do anything that may have repercussions with their relationships with Michael. Read the story to learn how these opposing forces find common ground and eventually love; but, will Luke's job finally put "a nail in the coffin" of their budding relationship and a wedge between he and his son?

Quite intense subject matter is covered in this story. It is well written with true-to-life/realistic events. I enjoyed learning all about Michael, Luke and Meredith.

Well thought out & deep ideas. Lots of layers of love

Michael is a teenage boy that had lost his other to death 3 years prior to the beginning of the story. He was adopted at birth by Sara & Luke, and has been a model son. Against his better idea, Luke has agreed thatMichael can meet his birth mother, and the story begins. Enter Meredith Hunter. Over many & varied meetings a relationship develops, Luke must battle both his jealousy of what is growing between them and deal with the emotional attachment that is growing between he and Meredith.

The loves scenes between Luke and Meredith are perfect. Gentle, slow, building to powerful and extremely satisfying and exciting conclusions.

The situations that Michael has to deal with asa teenage athlete were also right on the money. Full of the superior action required of a really good high school player, combined with the angst of the peer pressure from his friends.

Saying that this was a great read is too trite of a phrase. This is simply a REALLY good, Feel-Good Novel. Looking back, I enjoyed the entire ride, even though I ached with the characters as they were hurting along their path.

Luke Rayburn & Meredith Hunter meet in the very first chapter when Luke’s son, Michael, wants to meet his birth mother, who is Meredith. This book starts out with a bang with all this, & is told by Luke, Meredith & Michael’s points of views, at times even seamlessly switching points of views within the same scene.

“...tell me and we’ll stop this together.”

“Tell you? Oh no, I especially can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“You’re his father. And Mike can never know... He can never know!”

Despite how we know what’s coming, it’s predictable, this is a very well written story that wraps you up & takes you in...

<3 Michael, the topic he’s doing research on, as well as how he expresses his feelings, & his thoughts on his dad & bio mom.

Luke & Meredith come from opposite sides of the law, & despite being fearful of one another over their respective roles in Michael’s life, they feel something for each other. However, feelings that powerful will need to overcome some big issues...

This was a great story, although I found the end a bit abrupt, & not as satisfying as it could have been if it had been developed a little more. Still, it was worth reading.

I've read several Kathryn Shay stories, and find her to be a reliably competent writer (Cop of the Year, the Ludzecky Sisters series). She creates well-rounded, real, characters. She seems to educate herself on the themes she chooses to write about and obviously has a good editor.

Michael's Family has a very interesting premise - an adopted son wishes to meet his birth mother after the mother who raised him dies. This, obviously, is tough for his father, the widower. The relationship between father/son is great. About 1/4 of the way into the book, though, I had to wonder about the deceased wife/mom. Everyone talked about her as if she was great, but her actions pretty much made her sound like a shrew. I gave up around the 40% mark after Michael and his birth mother have a fairly unpleasant exchange (par for the course with a teenager) and her reaction/behavior is weird, followed by the father's even more unrealistic reaction/behavior. I wasn't the least bit invested in any of the characters by that time, and decided to cut my losses.

I have previously enjoyed Ms. Shay's books and this one was no exception. Ms. Shay writes about truly realistic things that happens to us in life. In this story Michael has just lost his adopted mum to cancer and now only has his adopted father. He begins to be curious about his biological mother and tells his father so. At first Luke the adopted father is sad angry and feel hurt that his son want's to meet this woman. As they are introduce to each other Meredith(the biological mom) and Luke size each other up fearful of each other. As time goes by not only is Michael is adjusting to having Meredith in his life he meets his grandparents uncle and cousins. Both hero and heroine are lawyers and both after being around each start falling for each other. In order to have their happy ever after they have to deal with past pain suffering anguish and learn to trust that though life is hard its great when you get a second chance at love. Book deals with serious issues adoption, teen alcoholism rape and death.

Michael’s Family is book 2 in a series by Kathryn Shaw. This book deals with adoption.

Public defender, Luke Rayborn, was struggling with his wife’s death and the day-to-day drama of raising a teenage son. Michael had handled his mother’s death well; but the loss was always there. He knew she did not leave him willingly, which led him to wonder and more about his biological mother. They had talked about that before his mother got sick. Luke remembered they left it up to Michael to decide.

Michael and Luke sat down for a long talk and Luke told Michael it was up to him. After thinking about it, Michael told Luke that he wanted to go ahead and contact her. Luke reminded him that she might not want to reconnect, and Michael was prepared for that. Luke was so afraid that the meeting would fail, and Michael would be left heartbroken. The other consequences of a meeting were also on Luke’s mind. What if she did reject Michael again? What if she wanted to keep Michael with her? Luke isn’t prepared to like Michelle as much as he does.

I must admit that I didn't expect to enjoy this book as the premise seemed too simple - biological mother and adoptive widower father fall in love and become a family. This was far from how it turned out to be. The story had a lot of depth to it and really explored the main character's emotions. The characters came across as authentic and genuine with real struggles that they have endured through life. I was disappointed that a declaration of love seemed to solve all the issues of the female lead, as so much effort had been out into her struggle and emotions. Towards the end of the story there were some sex/fantasy scenes that seemed to be added in for no apparent reason, they didn't really add to the story and just left me feeling confused as to why they were there.
On a whole I really enjoyed this book, more than most books I've read lately.

After the death of his adoptive mother, 17-year-old Michael wants to know who his biological mother is. Very reluctantly, his adoptive father Luke agrees. Enter Meredith. How these three get over the past and find together, is heartwarming to read, although sometimes a bit tedious. Add to that all the "coincidences": both Luke and Meredith Lawyers, one for the defence, one for the prosecution, their mothers best friends (sorry if that's a spoiler), and both of them attracted to each other. The most realistic one in this book was Michael, to the rest, after a while, my reaction was something like "oh yeah, what a coincidence...".
Still, a very good narration style and an overall good and interesting plot make this a very good read. A bit on the emotional side, but considering the background of the protagonists, that is not surprising.

It says I bought in 2021; and kindle shows I read it, but I did not remember it, so I reread it. Felt familiar, but still well worth a re-read … even though the topic was quite upsetting to me. I had years ago been in a relationship with an attorney who specialized in defense. I worked in Contracts administration. I respect that there are expensive lawyers for wealthy people who can pull out all stops to get guilty people off. I do not expect that level from a public defender. I do not expect them to work for a person who is found guilty and getting jail time to have him out of jail prior to sentencing. It should count towards his time, but don’t let him loose on the rest of us. Don’t pull out all stops and legal shenanigans to get a guilty rapist off. Thanks for letting me vent.

1. First of all, this book read like a decades old Harlequin Romance; when I checked the date it was published, I found that's exactly what it was.
2. I could understand Luke feeling a bit insecure about Michael wanting to meet his birth mother but why would an adoptive father resent the woman who gave birth to his son? Wouldn't he be grateful to her???
3. Luke was way too lenient with Michael; I understand Michael lashing out at Meredith when he was upset but it was up to Luke to let him know that it isn't acceptable to take his bad moods out on other people. That's Luke's job as the father of a teenager.
4. When Luke got upset with Meredith because she was having problems being intimate because of the rape, it was a HUGE dnf for me.

2 1/2 stars. It’s a sweet book. It isn’t bad at all. The writing is good and the characters are pleasant. I just couldn’t finish it. It was a bit slow, just kinda telling the story of a boy wanting to meet his birth mother and just kinda the basic happenings of that playing out. And it’s not a bad thing at all, it’s nice. I just couldn’t get pulled in. I also typically don’t like books where it jumps points of view, especially when it’s more than two viewpoints like it is here. It just kinda takes away any mystery and wondering, like what’s going to happen next and why is this person acting this way and what is this person thinking? We just know all of it because we are hearing everyone’s thoughts about every situation. So I don’t feel like I need to keep reading.

Emotions are all over the place!

I love this story about adoption and how it affects more than the adopted child.
Luke is a widower for three years and the father of Michael who is the adopted son who wants to meet his mother. Meredith is his real mother and is thrilled that she is able to have contact with Michael.
This is such a touching story that I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't read it. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a great story to read.

Moving

This book is about Mike wanting to know who his birth mother is. What she's like, what kind of work she does, what she does for fun, and why she gave him up. His Dad is not comfortable with this but resents. Luke and Meredith are wary around each other. Till neither one can resist each other and kiss. Luke fears his memory of Sara is fading and that Mike will choose Meredith. The blooming relationship is tenuous and is tested. It all comes down to, are you better together or apart.

At first I didn't like that there were chapters told in the POV of the teenager as well as the two main characters, but Kathryn Shay makes it work. The alternating points of view don't so much re-tell the story, but rather pick up the threads of the story line and keep it moving forward. There were times I dind't know what to hope for, but it all works out happily in the end. Sweet romance worth the time.

THIS IS GOLD

Usually, good books are so hard to find; Normally when I start a book I have to force myself to go further because some if them are truly uninspired but most times I go as far as 5 chapters. But this; THIS IS GOLD!!! I was hooked from chapter one and as the end drew near, I didn’t want it to end, started cursing my fast reading. My God! This is one if the Phenomenal books I’ve read. Kathryn Shay is now on my list of best authors.

When I see that Kathryn Shay has written a book, I usually try to read it. I liked what she tried to do with the plot and characters in this book, but I felt that there wasn't enough development of the relationship between Meredith and Michael. I also thought the sex scenes were unnecessary; but, then, I'm a reader on her way to being an octogenarian. I skip them!! All in all, this is a good book with a timely issue being presented.

Review for book Michael's Family

Book: Michael's Family
Luke and Meredith are brought together because of Mike. Meredith is Mike's birth mother and Luke is Mike's adoptive father. Mike decides he wants to meet his biological mother. Luke and Meredith develop feelings for each other and deal with a lot of issues (both happy & sad). This is a touching story but I felt the ending was definitely lacking.

Page turner

Storyline and characters bring you in almost immediately. Great romance and underlying storyline just as interesting. Luke and Meredith tug at your heartstrings. You sympathize with mike but want to ring his neck at times. Typical reaction to teenagers. Great read. I definitely enjoyed but then I have lived all of ms. Shay's books so far.

Was a free book so i cant complain too much because it kept me entertained. However i just couldnt get past the fact that these characters had some fairly big issues that that weren't resolved and they were just going to try to ignore. Also wasnt a fan of the speed that the characters emotions evolved. It didnt feel natural.

Sara Lucas Michael Meredith

It's been 2 years since Sara did. Michael has been wanting to meet his birth mother. Lucas is afraid that Michael would forget Sara or that his birth mother would take him away from him.
What a wonderful story I laughed, I cried, I fell in love. How can you ask for more?

This book was gripping in many ways. The emotions, the drama, the grief and the trauma, made for a compelling story. I also loved the various perspectives from the different characters in the book. Though I’m not one for reading about trauma, - cause obviously I wanna get away from the stress of life - it helps that the MCs got their HEA at the end.

A wonderful book

A sensitive handling of emotional and complex issues.......Kathryn's characters have depth . They are mature but real with real flaws. Her understanding of teenage problems is impressive and the way they are handled can be a help to others!
