I Do [Not]

Rate this book
A night in Vegas is all fun and games until you wake up with a ring on your finger and no clue who put it there.

Jacob Conner was never planning to get married, and he's certain that sentiment didn't change even when he was completely black out drunk on the Vegas strip. Which is also why he has no problem ignoring the elephant in the room and heading back to work at the front desk of a San Francisco luxury hotel.

So when the hotel holds a big conference for its shareholders and Jacob's otherwise cold and aloof boss, Aaron billionaire and heir to the Craig Hotel Empire, starts taking a special interest in him, he has no idea what he did to be hand picked as the glorified babysitter for his equally important and pompous older brother, Trevor Craig, who just flew in for the week from... Las Vegas.

This is going to be a very, very long week.

I Do (NOT) is an accidental marriage contemporary romantic comedy, featuring three points of view in a billionaire tug-o-war over a sarcastic and unsuspecting desk clerk. You can expect enemies to lovers banter, boss/employee scandal, a lopsided love triangle, crossed boundaries, and a couple slices of humble pie in this gay office romance.

Formerly released under Ninestar Press, the story has been rewritten from the ground up with added content and expanded dialogue and chapters.

I loved the idea of this and couldn’t wait to start reading. And it started well but...

For me it didn’t live up to its potential. Honestly when I got into the book and more importantly the characters I didn’t like that it was a love triangle featuring two brothers. It was also too long with not enough story to keep it going. I found myself skimming a bit towards the middle. I felt for most of the book it could have gone either way. That’s not how I like my romances. I like a spark, real attraction and a pull, more than an “ip dip doo” to decide who to end up with.

Liz I have to say was an absolute delight and she brightened up every scene she was in.

I don’t want to make this a spoiler review which means I can’t go into too much detail. But one of the main characters just fell flat and didn’t work for me.

But everything worked out well in the end. I was happy with Jacobs choice not that there was another real option but still.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NineStar Press and NetGalley.

This turned out to be a little too cliché for me. But I loved the drama and all the chaos involved.

This one reminds me of classic Mills & Boons romances. With a bit of Cinderella vibes from the very beginning.

The writing is smooth. The characters have a strong presence. The plot is entertaining. If you love enemies-to-lovers romance and want to have a good time reading some hardcore romance, go for this one. The second half has it all.

Thanks to the Publisher and the author for the advance reading copy.

Tension, passionate looks, and off the charts chemistry. This author will have me looking for her books in the future.

An angsts filled love triangle ensues when two brothers fall for the same man.
Love is definitely in the air for them but so is responsibility and the future of the family business. All are at stake .
Who will Jake chose when he has to make that painful decision?

Very enjoyable and satisfying read.

Huh. I spent most of this book confused and the ending didn't help.
The more I think about it, the less I like it. I don't think you should be surprised by the ending of a romance. That really just means that the author didn't do a very good job conveying the characters' feelings!
This felt very unsatisfying.

Absolutely brilliant!

I read a lot of books in this genre and I must say this is certainly at the top my list for a must read. This author takes a somewhat familiar theme, adds a touch of the movie “Sabrina,” and turns the entire story upside down in the most remarkable way. With twists and turns it will have you guessing until the last chapter. Additionally, like a breath of fresh air, the story is told in a very non-conventional manner which makes it even more fun to read. Kudos to the author!

This story was really about a two star read for me. It felt like a lot of build up, but I didn’t really get to know either of the brothers very well. I also didn’t feel much between Jacob and either of the brothers. There was very little to make me think he would pick either brother, and the ending just came out of nowhere.

So, why would I give this book 3 stars? Well, it’s remarkably well written for a first book. My problems were with the story and not the writing. Also, my minds all over the place since I’m getting ready to move to another state. Goodbye to the state of Florida.

Seldom, if ever, do I write a poor review of a book that I have read. Under normal circumstances, I recognize that not all books will appeal, and I have a healthy respect for authors and their work, and just don't rate or review a book I did not like. This book, however....... I really, really wanted to like this book, and was excited about the premise. My mistake. I am assuming that this book went through a review process before it was published; alpha and beta readers, arcs, and other folks. It amazes me that this book is so poorly written. Past tense and present tense narration in one paragraph, tenses all over the place in general, and the misuse of words (then for than and precedence for precedent were pretty glaring) and the mixing up of pronouns I found to be just unacceptable. Yes, I finished the book because I really wanted/hoped to find the ending to be wonderfully redeeming. It wasn't. This was the first of this author's work I have read. I rather suspect it will be the last.

3.5 stars - I had my issues with this book, mainly to do with my inability to suspend my disbelief over several things, but once I allowed myself to just go along with the chaos, I enjoyed this book a lot.

First, the things that works for me! I truly love a flustered, accident-prone main character, and we got this in spades with Jake (but not in an annoying way). This poor guy is a mess and is not ready for the whirlwind of drama he gets sucks into, but I loved his sarcasm and (usually) the way he dealt with everything going on around him and to him. I could understand why he had characters fighting over him.

I also loved, as previously stated, that this book was completely chaotic. It felt like a romcom mixed with a soap opera, and I had no idea how this story was going to end, or what twists would be introduced next. I don’t necessarily think all the beats worked perfectly, but I had fun with them anyway.

Lastly, it meant a lot to me as an ace-ish reader to see Liz describe the way she loves Jake. The character (as far as we know) isn’t ace, and I believe she meant that her relationship with him was more of a sibling love than a sexually romantic love, but I like that she said sometimes sex and love don’t go together. That struck me deeply, and even more-so when I reached the end and saw the author is also ace. It was a small but lovely touch that I really appreciated.

Now for the things that didn’t work for me: I already mentioned I had a hard time suspending my disbelief. There were some minor inconsistencies, but the two main things that stuck out were how

One more thing that bothered me was one of the love interests essentially assaulting Jake in the elevator. I didn’t get the sense that it was wanted (Jake seemed extremely uncomfortable) or that the LI understood that “provoking a reaction” is not a good excuse for it, and he only apologized when Jake pressed him for an apology. I had a hard time getting past a character doing this without remorse, especially because

I really enjoyed this story, I practically inhaled it once I started. What I particularly appreciated was an M/M romance more skewed toward interpersonal relationships than graphic sex scenes. Which is not to say there is no sex, just that rather than pages and pages of the mechanics of the act it is simply acknowledged as something that happened. I would have given it the full five stars but had to deduct at least one for the intermittent editing lapses that ripped me jarringly out of my absorption in the story. For example, occasionally the character of Jake is referred to in the wrong gender pronoun (perhaps this was originally envisioned as a straight romance?), one particular passage had him/her pulling his phone out of his/her previously (and subsequently) unmentioned purse! When the POV switches characters, for me, the timeline gets confused - where days appear to have passed in Jake's story when it switches to Aaron's POV its been mere hours. All in all, although these lapses were annoying they were not enough to prevent me from loving the book and being happy to recommend it.

I enjoyed this! Reading the afterward I see it’s the author’s first book, and I’m definitely interested in trying something newer and seeing if I like it. She got the rights back to it, did some punch ups, and rereleased it in 2023.

I liked our main character and his best friend, and I was ultimately won over by the love interest he ended up with. The love interest he didn’t end up with, I was not a fan of, which in a way means the book sold me on the ending but having the loser’s perspective included was a negative for me.
This book was unusual in perspective by having view points of the main character Jake, and both love interests, Aaron and Trevor. Unfortunately this takes some of the tension and thrill out of the love triangle element for me.
I could see a 3 perspectives love triangle story working well if it was an action/adventure type story with a lot going on, but I was never thrilled to be in the head of my least favorite love interest, and an asshole billionaire dad and work meetings weren’t exciting enough to be stuck in the losing LI head.
And that’s potentially an interesting move, that compounded with flashbacks from the drunken Vegas weekend occurring through the book made it just a bit too many perspectives and jumps to read as smoothly. It’s all designated well, and not confusing, but just felt like too many elements.

There are moments the writing grabs me and I was delighted by the humor and personality in it, other times it feels like it’s missing some of that spark. I suspect the writing and characters I did like would be more solidified if I check out one of her later books, so she’s on my list to look into more.

I got this as a kindle freebie a few months ago, and I’ve got to say, this one did the trick; I’m now interested in more by the author when I’d never heard of her before.

This one hits every cliche imaginable, but at 12% in I still don't know which of these people the hopeful couple is, so whom am I even rooting for?
The twisted ankle was the last straw after the Vegas wedding, hateful boss, awkward employee, BFF-girlfriend, rich-poor, ...

I usually do not rate books I did not finish. I make exceptions for the deserving ones, though ;-)

This was a chaotic-ly entertaining enemies to lovers office type romance....it worked and it worked well. It was sweet, spicy and fun. I would recommend for sure. This book will put a smile on your face while reading.

feels lacking somehow

2.5 stars.
There were a fairly significant amount of errors (grammatical, punctuation, sentence structure, homonyms), and the overall narrative structure was odd—switching between three POVs to tell all moments of the story but not chronologically, meaning the overlap was summed up in 2 other POV after we already read it from the first. It seemed like it was done for “plot twist”/surprise reasons, but the surprises weren’t actually that surprising so the narrative choice didn’t make sense. Plus there were other “plot twists” (eg Trevor’s “big reveal”) that weren’t foreshadowed well at all (eg references to a “Katie” were done in a way where I thought I missed a chapter rather than something I shouldn’t have known of yet).
It also felt like MC was written as a (stereotypical, little-to-no-agency, damsel in distress, Bella Swan knockoff type of) woman. Things happened to him/he went along with what people wanted and then the only real choice he made was choosing which guy (the one who wouldn’t openly date him or the one who forcefully kissed him in an elevator without consent).
Supporting characters really were just there for MC to talk to about his own life; the mention/brief retelling of SA towards the end was basically brushed off without any addressing of how it affected the person (which it clearly did). Secrets were kept for no reason—like really, the reasons for not telling each things were flimsy at best.
I read all the way through because it was short and I wanted to give the book the chance to sell me on either relationship being good, but it was all just flatter than my butt.

So many things with this one, I'm A little unsure how to rate it. I really, really liked the characters in this one. None were perfect, but I liked them that way. I love the way it ended in the fact that Jake ended up with who he needed to be with. I did not like the way he got there. I did not like, for a short while, he settled for so much less, and I liked even less that it was ever asked of him.

One of the few times I won’t spoil a book. I picked it up because it said “office romance comedy” and I’ve been needing a little more comedy these days. While it had a couple of funny lines, it was more emotional drama than anything. The writing was decent. So why am I disappointed?

It started out okay. You know how you root for the reluctant party to finally get their s*** together and the bad guy (in this case, the father of the billionaires) gets his comeuppance? Well, the reluctant party never gets his act together, and the bad guy actually wins. I hated that so much! Even though as the book went on, I was feeling “this is the one that deserves him” in the end it kind of felt like a hollow victory. It actually felt more like “if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with”. “I don’t have feelings for this guy but he likes me so why not.” I’d rather not have read it.

I really couldn't tell how this book was going to end with the love triangle between Jake and Aaron and Jake and Trevor, Aaron's brother. To be honest, my thoughts about whom I wanted Jake to end up with kept changing throughout the story until the end when it became blatantly clear who really deserved Jake. I'm totally happy with how the story ended.

And I'm going to leave it right there so that others can have the same experience when reading this.

A nice gay love story. I definitely would not call this full on rom-com but it had many of the elements. Many LOL moments and awkwardness. Good characterization, even the secondary characters. Liked this more than I thought I would and the ending was not predictable. Easy to read in a few sittings.

Recommended.

4ish stars A first read for me with this author with book.
I had mixed feelings when I was reading this one throughout the book.
Jake 26 yrs rises from a night out on the town with a hanger over and a ring on his finger. In Vegas he escapes back home to his job as a clerk in a hotel.
Craig was the head of his hotel chain with his brother Trevor visiting, Jacob would be his tour guide.
I thought at first Craig was a rude so-and-so for the way he speaks to Jake.
I dont know if Trevor was any better with his little game in the elevator.
Jake was in the closet with his father.
I felt for both brothers as their father was pressuring them to marry and bare children, until Trevors bomb shell that was.
This is a twisted romance with 3 people involved. A slow romance that eventually deals when the elephant in the room. Who was Jake married to? All three dance around the business of the hotel runnings with the brothers father pulling strings.
At times Jake comes across as a klutz, falling and dropping things.
There’s a female in the book that’s included as she interplays with both brothers in scenes. The book has all three povs with scenes flashing back to what happens in Vagas at the chapel, some information repeated.
I liked the ending as I think Jake choose the right brother in this.
HEA ending for Jake and…, this had little to no sexy scenes included.

Trigger Warnings: Contains Cheating

Okay so I hate cheating and feel everyone should be pre-warned. I feel cheating is always wrong, if you are over the relationship just end it. However, even though it it is a pet peeve, it didn't bother me as much as it usually does because it wasn't a focus point and all the drama that usually comes with it.

I enjoyed the characters and felt they all contributed something unique to the story. The pacing was good and the novel was not to angsty, especially as the drunk Vegas wedding trope usually becomes a melodrama.

The narative change was great, seeing all the characters side, but the time jump back and forth with the narative change was a bit confusing.

Last pet peeve, It might just be me, but I hate when a straight romance is repurposed as a gay romance. Especially when the incorrect pronouns are used and the main character cries for the smallest reasons.

Although the review focuses on the negatives, I did enjoy the novel and would read another novel the author publishes.

I very much enjoyed this book. The miscommunication trope is one of my least favorites but it didn’t take away from this story and only added a bit to the whole love triangle that was happening. I’m very happy with the HEA. I struggled throughout with who I wanted to “win” because all the characters are so lovable in their own ways. Jake is a blast. I wish I could be his best friend.

Someone, put a ring on it. If I could just figure out who! May the best man win! Jake Connor, desk clerk, wakes up a wedding ring on his finger. He knows he attended his sister's wedding. He knows he partied, a bit too much. But the ring? No idea where it came from. Returning to his reality, Jake's boss, Aaron Craig asks him to babysit his brother Trevor for a week helping him manage his schedule. Jake, crushing on his boss, secretly defiant but compliant, helpful and professional always! From the beginning, Trevor appears to smugly taung Jacob. Jacob is enthralled and occasionally loses his brain and speaking and balancing functions. When he ralleys though, he is fierce! Aaron, finally notices Jake and raises hope. Jake befriends Trevor. Aaron is all about the business and will do anything for it. Trevor and Aarons relationship is complicated with 'history'. Will Trevor stay under his dad's thumb? Is Aaron content under his dad's thumb? Will Jake ever get the courage to start his shop? Can Aaron support that? Lots of surprises in all relationships in this family. Nothing is as it seems and everything is obvious. Nice story. Trevor is a gem. Nicely done! I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Well this book was not what I was expecting. For those curious from the cover, this is a love triangle romance and not a menage. I’m a bit torn on the book as whole. The author took risks with varying degree of success. I enjoyed having the different POVs go back and show previous scenes from their perspective instead of just continuing the story. I through it was an odd choice to have the POVs be all three men in the love triangle and not just the two who end up together. On the one hand it did keep who Jacob would end up with more of a mystery. But on the other hand it made me equally invested in both brothers so I wasn’t always rooting for the one he ends up with. Having 3 POVs on top of the novel being short mean that a lot of the build on the relationship was missed. Honestly by the end of it I didn’t really care who Jacob ended up with. I also wasn’t really comfortable with the power dynamics with Jacob’s relationship with either brother especially where consent was never really addressed. The book was just okay for me, but an easy quick read.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. A page-turner for sure!
Desk clerk, Jake, had his hands full with figuring out who he married one drunken night, while balancing out his work and personal life. His boss, Aaron, assigns Jake the duty of being a guide and personal baby-sitter to his brother, Trevor. To add to it, both Aaron and Trevor seem to have set their eyes on Jake. Turns out Jake has plenty to sort through and decisions to make.

I was all for Jake getting his HEA, but I was so afraid of him picking the wrong brother! It was pretty tense at the end there. Was not sure which way the shoe was going to fall. It did get all sorted out and... let's just say everyone eventually got their HEA after all.

Fun read

This is the first work by this author that I have read, and I'm impressed. Worth the cost, without a doubt.

Technical: There weren't any grammar mistakes that stayed with me until the end of the book, or that were jarring enough to pull me out of the story. I did notice a few pronoun mistakes throughout the book. Some of the punctuation needs a polish, however.

Writing: There were some plot holes caused by the above mentioned pronouns mistakes, but it was easy to see what the author meant/intended. All in all it was a fun read, if you don't mind slightly improbable situations. And isn't that part of the fun of fiction to begin with? I was not expecting the ending, but I didn't get the one I was hoping for either. Ah, well. It was still a pretty good time!
