About the author

The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

Re-read in 2020 as part of my nostalgia-fest in times of boredom.

The quotes, the quotes, here come ze quotes!:

"Miss Daisy told us to be one our best behaviour while she called Mrs. Cooney on the intercom. So as soon as she turned her back to the class, me and Michael got up and shook our butts." -- wow, I didn't know that "be on your best behaviour" translates to "Shake Your Groove Thing".

"'That's a lie!' I lied." -- thanks for putting it bluntly what it's like when someone can't accept the truth.

Fun quick read

We started reading the books in the My Weird School series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot together during storytime, but our oldest started reading ahead into the series on her own and our youngest seemed to lose interest. So now, I am just reading to catch up with our oldest.

This story focuses on the boys' fascination with the school nurse, Mrs. Cooney. Somehow the class becomes convinced that she is a spy. This is such a fun story and the kids have wild imaginations. I really enjoyed the part where A.J. remembers how to do the abdominal thrust maneuver from a video he had seen in Mrs. Cooney's office and ends up saving Andrea's life when she was choking on a bit of apple.

I think it's humorous that the children use all kinds of idioms, even though they really don't know what they mean. It makes me realize that there are likely a lot of phrases that my hubby and I use that our girls don't understand. And I think about how babies and young children are immersed in a language they don't understand, but they gradually pick it up as they get older and are exposed to it repetitively. But I digress...

We have enjoyed this series and will continue our march through the books. Our oldest reads them very quickly, so I have one more to read in order to catch up with her.

I liked this book A.J and his friends think the school Nurse Mrs. Cooney is a spy and they got to her and say they are sick so they can see what she does and she does a lot of weird stuff, and they find out at the end that she is a spy!!!

A.J. and his friends are back, and he still hates school. But not Mrs. Cooney. Oh no. When he grows up, he wants to marry Mrs. Cooney! Except she's acting weird. Maybe she's a spy.

Fun and wacky book that I read with my six and a half year old son. I do love what the kids at Ella Mentry School think and how they're determined to prove Mrs. Cooney is a spy. I sometimes wonder what is going on in the adults' heads in this series!

2nd-5th Grade
This is the seventh edition of Dan Gutman’s My Weird School series of books that I think kids will love. I found myself laughing out loud when the kids from this school describe what they think is really happening in this school. In this edition, the boys in class all fall in love with the school nurse, Mrs. Cooney, but as they spend more time in the nurse’s office they begin to think she may be living a secret life, as a spy. The illustrations by Jim Paillot add to the humor with a modern cartoon feel. The large text and tempo of the writing will appeal to beginning, as well as more advanced readers. This book will have students looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Math/Language Arts/Science- Mrs. Clooney is able to trick A.J. into learning multiplication, when she knew he came to the nurse’s office to get out of that lesson that his teacher was teaching that day. Come up with ways of conveying a lesson while disguising that the lesson is going on, and see how long it takes for them to catch on. Or have the students come up with the ways that they would be able to be tricked into learning something by incorporating it into other activities

The Weird School Saga is getting more in touch with its odd side as it goes along. AJ is having a crush on his new school nurse, Mrs. Cooney, who is already married (hence the "Mrs.") yet his plans for romantic conquest thru nurse nuptials will not be denied! He still won't be kissed since, like most literary boys since Huck Finn, he finds the art of CPR (which fictional nurses have been depicted as being proficient at) distasteful at best. He needs a life--STAT!!! So controversial in its indirect view of most kids' fantasies of smokin' hot nurses and teachers, and, yeah, I had a few crushes on female teachers like most 12-year-olds so I can't fault AJ for crimes I had myself thought in my head. I think I need a doctor--and NOT someone smokin' hot! I'm over that!!! ....Right, guys???

This Weird School book is about the school nurse. AJ has a crush on her and decides he wants to marry her some day. After another girl gets sick in class, AJ decides to play sick in order to get out of doing math and as another plus, spend time with the pretty nurse. However, the school nurse has him doing weird things to get rid of his headaches like balancing yard sticks on his nose while jumping on one foot. Pretty soon all the students get a sneaking suspicion that the school nurse may actually be a spy. I thought this story was cute but it wasn't really my favorite and I thought the ending felt very rushed.
