In the Devil’s Playground, a Sinner always plays to win. Nicolette
Back in Springfield for the first time in years, I needed money, and I needed it fast.
When my job as a hostess at the local Italian place wasn’t going to earn me enough to cut it, I did the one thing I promised I would never I got involved with one of the syndicates that rule the seedy city.
Considering I’m trying to avoid anyone with ties to the Libellula Family, I head to the West Side, and hope like hell the Sinners Syndicate will give me a chance.
The Devil’s Playground isn’t my first choice, but what else can I do? I make it clear that I’m only interested in serving drinks… until some big shot gambler offers me ten grand for one night.
I take him up on it—only to have him wager his night with me to another guy… and lose.
Now I’m expected to honor my deal with the Syndicate’s underboss, and the charming bastard who hired me for this job in the first place... while also hiding any ties I have to his enemies.
Royce
From the moment Nicolette walked into the Playground, I wanted her—but then I brought her on as one of our girls, and she was suddenly off-limits.
I learned the hard work and pleasure don’t mix. If I’d met her anywhere else, I might’ve taken a shot at the waitress, but she needed the job more than she needed a boyfriend, so I backed off.
And, okay, that’s a damn lie. I didn’t pursue her, but hell if I didn’t take a page out of Devil’s book and start watching over Nic from the shadows…
I would have left it at that, though, until one of the Playground’s more well-known wallets set his eyes on my girl.
They don’t call me “Rolls” for nothing. I played him for the night she agreed to, telling myself that I was just saving her from what the sick and twisted customer wanted to do to her.
Then I get my first taste of Nicolette, and I realize that one night will never be enough… and I’ll stop anyone who tries to take her from me.
*The Devil’s Playground is the second book in the Deal with the Devil series, a collection of interconnected standalones set in the fictional crime hotspot of Springfield. It tells the story of “Rolls” Royce and the one woman he’ll do anything to save, Nicolette Williams.
I absolutely loved Royce and Nic’s story! This one a little more gritty and storyline driven. It explained why Royce is how he is and how he met the Devil…it brought in other characters and made me want to read more about them! My heart broke for Nic a little why she was so shy (no spoiler) and it also made me so proud when she was able to take back a little of her own self worth. Royce was so supportive and sure. Stalker sure. Loved their dynamic. I can’t wait for more from this author!
This one was so good! I love how understanding the MMC is with the MFC in this book. The way he handled her trauma and boundaries are…. Oh my heart. Chefs kiss 💋
Royce knows the tendency to stalk women runs in his family, so it’s no surprise to him when he finds himself stalking the new waitress at the Playground. Nicolette knows stalking and craziness, and thinks this feeling she has is her ex, not Royce. One lucky hand in poker has Royce winning a night with Nic away from a creep, only to show her he can be a gentleman once in a while, though it takes less than a week to go from boss/employee to lovers. But Nic’s ex is still around and a part of the rival syndicate in town, and he wants her back by any means necessary.
Nic and Royce get their happy ending in this standalone book in a series.
I loved that Nicolette was still willing to give guys a chance after what she went through, though I wonder if a relationship like she fell into was more because she felt safe. It was hilarious how much Royce ribbed Lincoln last book about having only one woman, then immediately fell down that same hole. I do wonder what the repercussions will be for breaking the truce or if their leader what honest in letting them go and Nic’s ex becoming a problem for them.

thoughts wow this book really had twist I really didn't see coming and it was absolutely perfect!
Royce was HOTTT I loved how protective and how obsessed he was to Nicolette. He also was so thoughtful he was he made sure he did things that Nicolette would absolutely love.He was gentle and just literally perfect!!!
now Nicolette went through a LOT the poor girl experienced s0 much at such a young age, but she is so strong and really became such a strong.
I really loved booths of these characters as individuals but as a couple they were the absolute best! Also the spice was absolutely PERFECTION. I seriously LOVED this book so much!!
the constant twists really kept me engaged into the story it was so interesting and I genuinely couldn't have guessed half the stuff that happened!
I'm so excited to read the next book!! (Dragonfly) like its on my kindle and I will definitely will be reading it next week!!! Highly recommend this book! before you read pleaseee check the trigger warnings!!!
This is book two in this series and overall the storyline might have been enjoyable, but the horrendously overwhelming number of mistakes made it impossible to enjoy. I almost quit at 30% because it was impossible to get through a page without multiple blatant errors. So many typos and misused words, over and over. Issues with continuity. During a scene at the end he’s carrying her battered body and speaking to Damien and it says something about “while gathering items for breakfast .” What? That was out of left field and not at all in the scene.
Then there the fact that Nicolette was TSTL- not only is she going out without a guard- but admittedly not even paying attention to her surroundings 🙄🙄. She escaped a high ranking enforcer she already knows is stalking her and has threatened her (but she keeps internally monologuing about how he isn’t REALLY a threat and won’t hurt her 🙄) and she was just SA by another man at work. One would think she’d be mindful of her surroundings at minimum. Honestly I couldn’t feel a lick of sympathy for her when Kieran kidnaps her. She basically walks into his arms willingly, so she deserved it.
By the end- I had to skim to just finish. Between the horrible editing and the brain dead h just letting men assault her, I was over it. Can’t say I’m interested in the stalker cousin’s story (he’s not remotely interesting) or Damien’s story at this point.
I was pretty into this book until the main character became a complete idiot at the 70% mark. Nicolette gets attacked at work by this guy and her actions after the fact made zero sense to me. This girl literally left to run 20 minutes (!!) home when she has a stalker ex that’s been following her. Like, I know she panicked and left without her bag and keys, but why did she not go to Royce’s place anyway? The place has guards and round the clock security. They know her, so I doubt they would turn her away because she forgot her key. Also, why on earth did she not just tell the bouncers at the club that this man assaulted her?! Isn’t that why they’re there?
There were just a lot of little situations like that that seemed to be handled terribly for no real reason. Link and Royce talk about how the bouncers don’t tolerate the girls being bothered by clients and Damien didn’t even give a crap about Royce killing Kieran. They could have gone to this man and said call off your enforcer, he’s trying to hurt my girlfriend, but no, I guess. By the time Nicolette got kidnapped by her ex because she wanted to be ‘independent’ and go get the tacos herself, I was done. I couldn’t even feel much sympathy for her since she kind of brought it on by her own dumb decisions.

The Devil’s Playground by Carin Hart is second book in the Deal With The Devil. This is currently my favorite book in this series. I really enjoyed book 1 in this series but book 2 blew it out of the water. I was hooked from chapter 1. I loved Royce since book 1 and his book was everything I was hoping for. The plot line was interesting and kept my attention. The spice was well written. Overall, I loved this book so much and I can’t wait to read book 3 in this series.
Nicolette was a strong, fierce, and sweet FMC. Her backstory was rough and she was still super sweet even after everything she’s been with. I really loved her character. She had great character development throughout the story! She did what she needs to and I respected her for that. Her and Royce were explosive. They had great chemistry. I loved watching their relationship progress. I loved everything about this couple and their story. I also loved seeing more of Ava and Link (Couple in Book 1). I am starting to become a huge fan of @carinhartbooks !! Immediately diving into book 3. This series just gets better and better.
I really love Carin Hart's writing, especially when it comes to the MMCs and their absolute obsession with the FMCs. Royce is no less obsessed with Nicolette than any of the other men, though he's a little less... feral?
This is the type of book I want with a dark romance. Obviously, in real life, none of this would be acceptable, but in a dark romance, it's essential. Tracker? Yes. Light stalking? Of course. Possibly cheating at cards so you can win the girl you're obsessed with in a bet? Duh.
Listen, the dynamic between Royce and Nicolette was basically insta-love. Nic may have had her reservations but they were weak at best and Royce was all in from the start. And this is one of the few occasions that I wasn't completely turned off. They weren't physically together right away. There was a slight background suspense plot that kept the book moving at a decent pace. Everything just works well here.
Check those triggers, of course. There are a couple of instances that Nic gets assaulted and while they aren't very long, they are fairly detailed. Overall though? Just a great story with some well-done characters. I'm looking forward to starting the next book in the series.
This book is decent and entertaining enough to get you through a book slump. Nic is hiding from her ex, as the FMCs do in these genres, and needs to return to her hometown where he lives. I'm not sure why because her mom was in a hit n run accident, but by the time we get introduced, her mom is out traveling. So I'm confused as to why Nic stayed?
She also seems super hard up for money, something I again dont get. Her mother is on a months long vacation (rich much). Why do you need money to stay in your moms house while she's gone? She ends up working at the Playground and catches Royce's attention, and he is instantly obsessed.
Overall, 3 stars - book plot is pretty standard, and this series has an issue with skip forwards or, like the book, was edited and pieced together awkward. Like we don't get to see Nic and Royce's interview, but instead, they recall it and repeatedly say how much they hit it off and that "there was something there." WELP, I would have loved to experience it in real time... too bad we won't. I'll continue the series. I'm ready for Simone and Jake's story as well as the Dragonfly book.
This one was better than the first one but still awful. I will not be reading the next one.
Royce is less insane than Linc so it made him a much more bearable character.
I liked that we kinda got to see Nic and Ava become friends but I would have liked some interaction between Nic and Linc. And all four like a double date situation.
When Nic was being attacked in the club by Miles, I was so confused as to why her first reaction was to run out the club and home. Half the people in there are a part of organized crime and her boyfriend’s employees and they would have killed Miles. Being there was the safest option yet she decided to run home with none of her belongings?? Like that makes no sense.
Once again, Nic is kidnapped by the rival gang. Royce comes to her rescue and kills the kidnapper/her ex aka breaking the truce. But then he comes face to face with Damien the rival leader and he’s like all good man I would have killed him myself if you hadn’t. wtf is the point of this truce.

Royce lives by all these rules he’s set for himself. Rules that let him keep it together, maintain his integrity, and most importantly, keep himself out of trouble. And then Nicolette shows up and has Royce wanting to have his rule about fraternizing with his employees go take a swim with the fishes. Which works out because Nic has been in hiding for the past three years and now that her own personal monster has found her she’s gonna need Royce’s help.
I adore Royce. I have zero qualms with his actions, especially those towards Nic. And Nic is a survivor and fighter. She never let her past break her, which is of course the siren’s call it should be for Royce. IRL the idea of a stalker freaks me out, but the fact that all Royce wants to do is protect Nic has me giving him a pass. Not that he’d care 😉.
This is book two in the series which features Rolls Royce McIntyre, the second in command to the Devil. I was excited for Royce’s story, but this book fell short for me because Royce was too comical in his characteristics from book one. Even the Devil changed in this book as well; they both were less strong, less alpha. It felt like someone else wrote the dialogue and storyline not the same writer as book one. Royce is second in command and has a great talent to quickly figure out how to solve issues, a true fixer. The lead female is Nicolette who has just escaped an abuser ex boyfriend. Royce hired her because he recognized her need for a job. Nicolette caught his eye, where he tried to ignore her, but the pull was too strong. Disappointed that this book did not match to book one.
I should warn anyone that’s thinking about reading this book that there’s some heavy stuff there (like SA described on the pages), so read the warnings by the author. This book was ok, following the same thing of the previous one, with the same problems I had with the last one, with some things never solved or explained for example. Anyway, the plot is this: Royce is the second in command of the Sinners, and he set his eyes on the new waitress working in the Devils Playground, Nicolette. She’s back in town after running away from a very abusive relationship with a man that works for the Dragonflies. She’s traumatized, he’s obsessed, he wins her in a poker game and their romance begins. It was ok, and I’m curious about Damien, but I have a feeling I will be disappointed by his book.
I don't think i liked it more than the first one. It hadn't a lot plot there and i didn't like the main characters very much. First the plot was around the main female character's life and second the characters had their own personalities and i quite liked them but after a few chapters they turn out to act and do stuff the main characters from the first book did. And something that i noticed in this book was that altought they were in mafia and had to deal with dark things it wasn't mentioned a lot of times something dark or something likely but it had a lot of mentions of abuse but that wasn't even good if in the whole book it didn't mention even one scene with violence. I want to read the next one tho. I'm very intrigued about Damian and his stalker.
The prologue in this book had great promise. Good comedic timing, clever and witty, emotion and a bit heartfelt. However, the author does so much telling instead of showing that I didn't have any care for the characters or their relationship. We got no actual scene of the characters meeting, just told that it happened. In their first meaningful interaction we are just told what happens, no dialogue AT ALL. So we have no chemistry, no point of reference for why they even like each other so much. It's all just shoved at us in paragraph after paragraph of, essentially, info dumping so we just have to believe it. Thus, no character growth is meaningful or noteworthy. It's as though the author wanted to get to the part where they were *together* more quickly that they didn't want to write the rest of it.
Pretty good book I enjoyed listening about Rolls-Royce and Nic. She is a waitress at the devils playground and he’s second command. The devil he’s kind of the cleanup man and the golden retriever I would say, but still the talker. He has blonde hair blue eyes and is apparently really good cards. He falls for her first, but she has hidden secrets. Her ex is part of the dragonflies and dealing with now that the dragonflies and the sinners have a mutual agreement she’s in a tough situation, so is he But it does have a happy ending and it’s cute

A very standard mafia romance that’s just entertaining enough to keep you reading.
Royce is the underboss of the Sinners. He becomes obsessed with the girl he hires who is secretly running from an abusive ex with ties to her hometown. They must work through all the drama and trauma in order to have the love they want with each other.
This is book 2 of the Sinners Syndicate. Royce seems more of a slick, smooth talking character than a scary mob 2nd in command. I have no idea how he keeps his underlings in line. Must be because he has Devil sitting at his nightclub table.
I don't know who i love more the devil or Royce.... He knew he was in trouble when he meet Nic don't ever say you will never be the type of man to fall deep in love because she fell hard for her and the security and love he gives her to show her he loves and cares for her is chiefs kiss. Nic is strong and independent i get why she didn't want Royce I'm so happy she fell for him but nit right away either . amazing book i loved the story and characters this is my second book by Carin and i cant wait to read her other books
I actually enjoyed this book so much more than the first in the series. Royce's personality and actions were believable. I totally bought that he's the Devil's second, and his love for Nicolette? swoon. Just goes to show you can never underestimate the ones that seem unserious in comparison to the boss, because they *will* show you how serious it actually is. Nicolette was a good character too, and extremely deserving of empathy. Looking forward to diving into the rest of the series and universe!
I LOVED Nic and Royce and the pacing of the book and their relationship but I am absolutely begging on my hands and knees for a better editor. I feel like some of the mis words and spelling mistakes could be picked out even on microsoft word or google docs. If I hadn’t kept noticing these mistakes throughout the book it would have been a 4.5 but as it is they just kept distracting me from the story
I just cannot get enough of Carin Hart’s books let alone the ones in this series! Devils Playground was *chefs kiss*
Royce is a pretty boy charmer with a quick smile and a loud mouth he uses to distract people from the darkness that definitely lives inside him.
Nicolette is hiding from a member of the rival syndicate, who we come to find out not only abused her but started grooming her at a very young age.
The attraction is obvious, the love takes some time. The whole book was spent with me rooting for Royce and just waiting until Nicolette was in a place she could accept how he felt. Royce takes the time to figure out her love language and makes sure to use that knowledge to show her in the best way he can of his feelings. It just takes a bit for her to realize how truthful he is in his feelings for her.
This book in the series is definitely the book that shows that people who are least expected of it are capable of loving deeply and everyone should be able to experience the feeling of being loved in the right way.
Royce McIntyre was the boss over his business, where Nicolette comes to work. Unbeknownst to Nicolette, Royce wanted her, when he first saw Nicolette. They have a rock beginning relationship between them. But Royce wanted her to belong to him and Royce wants to make her happy. When Nicolette discovered how much Royce wants to be with her she gives it a try. You have to read this story. It is awesome and entertaining.
This story, despite dealing in some pretty dark themes i.e obsession, male violence towards women, has a surprisingly light touch. Royce is an absolute sweetheart, despite being a stalker initially, who loves his woman, Nic, to distraction. His character shines off the page & you find yourself cheering him on throughout the book. I loved the first book but I think this one is my favourite.
Kinda sad on this one. Loved the first book and was surprised I didn’t care for this one. There was a plot there but there was SOOOOO much inner monologue that it killed the book. The dialogue between characters was short. Spice was ehhh. Being the mafias second and not being so many is kinda bland. Just disappointing.
I enjoyed the book for the most part. It definitely could have been better, better edited, better written. I liked Nicolette but I loved Royce. He’s so honest with himself about how he feels about Nicolette and the lengths he’ll go to to keep her. This book has some funny moments but it could have been so much more.
Nicolette and Royce get a bumpy starts after to their relationship. There is a lot of problems and Nicolette has a lot to get used to in living with the Sinners second-in-command. Old relationships haunt them both and living in a syndicate partnership is difficult. Link and Ava visit again. Enjoyed it.
If Carin Hart writes it, I’m gonna read it 100% of the time. This series is so good if you like mafia with a side of toxic and dark romance, then you will want to read this. This is a book to you need to read book one first and it’s just as good as this one. I live for these characters.
I enjoyed the story but good grief, the number of plot holes. Small ones, but enough to be so annoying. The editing was not good and I don't know that I can get through any more of these books, as interesting as Damien's story sounds.
