It’s rare to encounter genuine authenticity and care in an author’s work. There’s always some kind of facade or ego in the way. What’s incredible about a book from a writer who is empathetic to their audience is the level of care placed in the work itself. This is very true for Sarah Cook, the author of Diary of Murders.

Something I really appreciated was the content warnings for graphic depictions of sex, violence and sexual assault. Now in an age where we’re slowly becoming more aware of the effects of abuse, these sorts of things should be more common so as to warn potential readers who may not be in the correct space to consume such content. Sarah very kindly placed links to charities that help folks affected by such topics at the end of the book. As a survivor of certain abuses, this is something I can really appreciate.

Now to the story itself. What did I think of it? Well the fact I could barely put it down the day I got my copy is a sure indicator I enjoyed it. I was hooked. The story was descriptive, tantalising and enthralling. I felt transplanted in late 19th century England with every word. I couldn’t get enough of the story and was somewhat bereft to see it end. Diary of Murders keeps you guessing what would happen next right until the end. Nothing was over the top or too understated: the balance was just right.

A fine novel leaving you wanting more, I cannot recommend Diary Of Murders highly enough.

A dark romance alternating with a serial killer mystery set in Victorian times sounded like a very intriguing premise and the book did manage to deliver on that to some extent.

It was much darker than what I usually read but the characters of Miriam and John were interesting and so was their relationship based on their shared dark desires.

The diary entries detailing the anguish and confessions of a murderer were interspersed with the the story of their marriage and the connection was made clear in an explosive way. That was quite shocking.

There are a lot of sensitive issues handled in the book and quite well. It was uncomfortable to read in places because of the direction it took but that was the nature of the story. It did manage to maintain the suspense till the end and that was a major plus.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

As someone who's new to both Victorian fiction and dark romance, I was hooked by this book. The main characters (especially Miriam) pulled me in straight away and by the time I was about a third of the way through, it had become unputdownable.

The intertwining of John and Miriam's fiery relationship with the grisly murders laid out in the diary excerpts means there's never a dull moment. The attention to detail when it came to scene setting and costume really showed the author's passion for the era, and I felt like I could see everything play out in front of me as though on a screen. This is true for the set up, the murders and the spice (this is not a book to read on the train, I quickly learnt!).

As the mystery unfolds the reader is able to put the pieces together, but is still left guessing until the final reveal. I found myself certain I had it figured one way or the other, only to change my mind on the next page right up until the end. The finale is satisfying yet keeps back some surprises, and is so cleverly set up.

Thank you to the author for an ARC!

I appreciated Sarah’s attention to detail in every scene, paired with perfect balance between dialogue, thoughts and descriptions. Additionally you’re always on edge between reading the diary entries and onto the next scene! Fantastic balance and pacing, unlike I’ve ever read in any book before!

The content warnings mentally prepared me to face what was inside the book and the explicit content did not effect me in any way. The authenticity of the scenes, even those that included abuse, was exactly en pointe and it carried me right through them.

The mental battle that Miriam faces after the abuse is particularly intense, yet is exactly how most women would respond to such abuse (as I’ve been through a similar SA experience to what has been depicted)
PTSD, flashbacks and depression are almost a universally unavoidable step to recovery and Sarah’s attention to detail in Miriam’s recovery was very respectful and relatable. I would not be surprised if readers come away from finishing this book feeling more validated and whole than they were at the beginning. Because I certainly feel that way.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to ARC review Diary of Murders. I truely hope there will be a sequel, as it is honestly a breath of fresh air compared to the stiff fantasy romance novels of 2023.

This book is so unique. So much love, pain, angst, jealousy – so many emotions. In addition, This is not a long novel - and it packs quite a punch with all that it covers. I'm not sure I'll ever get over it and I mean that as compliment to the author. Miriam and John are such interesting and strong characters, both separately and as a couple. I love Miriam's fiery spirit and her desire to help others. Miriam and John have so much passion and Miriam's control in the bedroom is quite unconventional, especially for novels of this time, and I love seeing women in this role!!

This is definitely a dark romance along with a some mystery along the way. Please read the trigger warnings before starting this book. This definitely is a smokin story with tons of 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and chemistry between John and Miriam.

This is a different sort of Victorian romance novel and I loved it!!! So much suspense and twists and turns. If you like dark, suspenseful romance novels set in historical times, then this may be a great fit for you!

I loved every single bit of this book! The love, the suspense and tension, the twists, the spiciness!

I had an idea about who the murderer was, and then I was proven absolutely wrong! Although, in regards to John's death, I had an overwhelming sense that Miriam was behind it. His slowing heartbeat; I read the next chapter, hoping that I was wrong again and then sobbed when I wasn't. The ending was beautiful and yet bittersweet as well. I am glad Miriam has the child she should have had before.

I knew from the start what this book would entail. I read the warnings and knew it might be rough to read, and indeed, I had to place the book away from me after finishing chapter eight. What I didn't expect was to feel so connected to Miriam. She and I went through similar trauma, and the aftermath is exactly how I felt, and still feel even though years have passed. Healing is a messy thing.

"After all, recovery was a long, cold path with winding twists and pitfalls when you’d least expect it."

Thank you, Sarah, for sending me the ARC! You wrote a wonderful, beautiful, melancholy story that I will forever cherish.

I’m fairly new to Victorian romance but not dark romance and OMG this book is so good!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

John & Miriam

Wooow the writing was amazing! You can tell this author put a lot of thought, work and passion into this book.

"You are my goddess, Miriam. And I wish to praise you."

Oooo the spice was so so good! I usually read books where the guy is more of the dom in the bedroom. For the women to be in control omgggg it was amazing to read! 🔥🩵

This is a dark read so check trigger warnings. The story was just amazing. I love the suspense and I didn’t know where it was going to go. I loved it all. I definitely recommend and will read more from this author! 🩵🔪☠️

EMOTIONAL DAMAGE

*major spoilers below*

GIRL. This man went to all this effort to meticulously murder the people who aided and abetted your rape, and this is how you repay him!

I do see both sides, technically speaking John did have a few excess murders. But I still would’ve TRIED to un-madden him.

Overall, book was a really gripping tragedy. Smut excellent & language/writing really enjoyable.

This was such an interesting read! It is a romance, murder mystery that does not disappoint. This story is unique in that it takes place in the mid 1890s, instead of present day as most romance and mystery books do. It was a little confusing at first with the POV changing but not explicitly stating who’s POV it was, but it became more clear after a couple of chapters.

This book turned out to be so much more than I expected! A Victorian romance has always had such special place in my heart and this book did not disappoint. While I had a bit of a hard time focusing the first few chapters, once it sucked me in, I was IN. Miriam and John’s love was so beautifully twisted! Being a murder mystery just added to the dark and twisted love that this world has to offer. A very very good read and I look forward to more from this author!

I loved this book, I haven’t read many thriller/mystery books and I’ve never read a Victorian novel before but nevertheless I loved it. I love the way it’s written with the diary entries of the murders along with Miriam and Johns love story,it kept me hooked the whole way guessing. I love dark romances so this was right up my ally and the love story between Miriam and John was portrayed so well, it was a quick and easy read. Thankyou so much for sending me an ARC

Wow. This book was really full of twists and turns. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, the author flipped the story around.

We really get to watch one character unravel while the other finds themselves again through similar means.

The author’s use of repeated phrases throughout chapters, scenes, or even the entire book both draw comparisons to our main couple, John and Miriam, and emphasize the foreshadowing. Was some of it a little heavy handed? Yeah. That being said, I really enjoyed both the story and the way it was told. There are so many books out there that are interesting ideas and poor execution. This is not one of them.

Miriam might be one of my favorite FMCS I’ve read this year. She’s strong, outspoken, and knows herself (and all her dark proclivities). Miriam taking herself back is inspiring, and while I don’t know if this TECHNICALLY qualifies as a HEA (at all), the story’s resolution is satisfying.

I received an ARC of this book for a review, which I have word vomited as honestly as possible above.

Here’s my review on “Diary of Murdersl by Sarah Cook.

Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Story:📖📖📖📖📖

This deserves a round of applause..

I love when stories are so moving that you can feel the emotions of the characters. You can feel their jubilance, their rage, their sadness, their pain.

This was a story that did exactly that. Miriam and John are characters that are well rounded and there are things you’ll hate about them but there are also things you fall in love with.

The tension is strong in this Novella but unravels beautifully. The spice gradually gets spicier and spicer and you are hit with a few surprises. John Bennet is definitely going to be a great addition to my forever growing book boyfriend list.

One of my favorite aspects is trying to figure out who is writing the diaries. This is a wonderful whodunit.

This is should be what Victorian Era Dark Romances should strive to be like.

Well done.

Wow...

Every time I thought I knew where this book was going, it surprised me again.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via BookSirens and am leaving this review of my own volition.

This was very well written and the dual timelines actually helped tell the story instead of detracting from it. I loved that Miriam was the Domme and John was the sub.

Diary of Murders was an immensely enjoyable read. Most dark romance tends to be in first person, but this novel shifts between first person (the diary entries) and third person (the main narrative). At first I wasn't sure how I would feel about it, but it just works so well with this story. The writing itself fits the Victorian period, the author did a great job choosing wording and descriptions that are eloquent while still building up such a deliciously dark plot.

Sarah Cook somehow manages to build her characters very deeply and quickly. There were a few side characters that weren't featured too much and yet I still had such a clear picture of them in my mind as well as how they fit into the story. The main characters were very well written. The plot itself was superb, she did not hold back any punches when it came to the romance or the murders. I was up until 2 in the morning trying to finish the book because I could not put it down! The novel has Penny Dreadful vibes (sans the supernatural) given it's dark, has plenty of gore and murder, a strong female lead that you are rooting for who has to overcome adversity.

I am excited to see what else Sarah writes from here, this is an impressive debut novel! I hope she writes more Victorian-based novels since they are sorely missing from the dark romance genre.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect going into this book, I was so intrigued by the description but as I'd never read a Victorian romance let alone entwined with a murder mystery I was hesitant as to whether this would be for me.

I'm pleased to say I couldn't put this book down and was sucked right into the world of London in the 1890's! The book follows the beautiful love story of John and Miriam's and right from the lust at first sight between them and the sexual tension, I was hooked. I loved Miriam's fiery passion and John's absolute adoration and devotion to her. I loved reading about the murders as diary entries and they always kept me guessing; just when I thought I'd cracked who the murderer was, I was left doubting myself by the next chapter and then guessing all over again! There is love, passion, rage, despair - this book takes you through such a rollercoaster ride of emotion.

Diary of Murders has something for every dark romance reader it's got the spice, the violence (I'd definitely give the trigger warnings a read!)

You've written such an amazing book Sarah and look forward to reading any books you release in the future - Thank you so much for the ARC!

Oh my word!!! This author blew it out of the park in this book right here!!! I am amazed and baffled by how incredible this story was. The setting and the woven structure of this story was by far amazing. I loved the back and forth with this story from past to present telling. I also truly loved how strong some triggering topics got because it brought the story to life even more on the truths of what happens in life. Many people couple could sadly relate to this book in the triggering topics. So check trigger warning but I will without a shadow of a doubt recommend this story. 10/10 recommend!!!

I like steamy scenes as much as anyone but I hold that some sort of a build up is owed to readers, something concrete to build upon a relationship—especially if you want me to believe an educated Victorian lady would be acting like this; it’s her father’s hospital not Devil’s Acre!

Heed the warnings on the back. This is no romance. This is smut with a serial killer plot every other chapter. This will be my LAST tik tok recommendation. My poor brain, rotting.

Seeing the description of this book, I was eager to give the book a read! However, I was a little disappointed I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
I think the premise and the overall plot idea were really interesting and had a lot of potential! With the added mystery and plot twist at the end, which were good.
I did have to rate it lower for a few reasons, firstly I didn't see any details on triggers for the book (e.g. FMC Dom, No HEA, Non Con, s*x outside of MC's) so I did struggle with some aspects of the book as they aren't usually what I would read.
Secondly, the first part of the book is more detailed and you get to experience the initial meeting and courtship between the MC's, but after that the author just condenses by summarising across a period of time and that just removes the connection with the reader, and we don't get the experience the relationship or character development. The dark desires that connect the MC's are also just skimmed over, rather than explored. I think if you are labelling this as a dark read, then you need to embrace that and give the reader more.
Would also like to comment that the start of the courtship...the giggling, winking, twinkling with glee were all a little too much for me.
Lastly, the murder journal on one page and then a brief relationship summary on the next just felt a little disjointed and like two different books were merged. I think more context and progression (both in character and relationship) needs to be put in, with the odd journal exert added. The FMC went through something traumatic, and some readers will be able to relate to that and so the author can really expand on these chapters with the pain and healing that the character goes through.

Recently, I've read quite a few historical fiction books which have been set in the Victorian era and I love the contrast between some of these which focus on the gentry and then others which show the seedier side to life back then.

This book was dark!
Passions run high and these manifest in different ways - both romantically and violently as we see the development of the relationship between Miriam and John.

There was an awful lot going on in this book and I loved the excitement. The descriptions were pretty graphic, so be warned! If you're not keen on gory details of murders or quite explicit spicy scenes of a niche nature, than maybe this won't be for you.
I, however, was fascinated! (Maybe I shouldn't admit that!)

I think that being this detailed really allows you to submerge yourself in the storyline and be transported in time.
The language, the outfits and the settings were all well researched and it really felt as though I was there with them (although for the murders, I'm glad I wasn't!)

I loved the mystery of this. I had no clue what to make of the clues and information given and in the end, the theory I'd made, was completely wrong!
This would be a great one to re-read, if I had more hours in the day atm - maybe one for early in the new year whilst it's still fresh in my head.

This was a really immersive, quick and exciting read and I finished within a couple of sittings. I can't wait to see more from this author.

Warning: May contain minor spoilers, but opening comments are spoiler-free. Check out my Reading Ranting page for more.
Beautifully tragic and wonderfully written. This blew me away with how good it was.
I received this as an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. I was late to get to it through no fault of the book.
What I liked…
Firstly, the writing is beautiful. It captures emotions and visuals in a wonderfully unique way. It’s also 3rd POV and flips between the two main characters in a way that connects the reader to both of them at the same time.
The characters are super fun. Miriam is a strong female in the Victorian era where it was rare for a woman to have a career let alone one that requires a high level of education like a doctor.
The spice was super fun to read and all about the couple freeing themselves,. It was wonderful.
I can’t tell you the other reasons I love it because they’re spoilers, but the twists and surprises were fantastically done. I didn’t see it coming.
The way it all came together at the end was both tragic and beautiful but also made sense.

What I didn’t like…
Nothing.
I lie. There was a character I really didn’t like because of how they hurt the MC and I wasn’t happy with their ending.

Final thoughts…
Amazing story of love and mystery and loss. I cried at the end and I almost never cry over books.

~ Thank you to Sarah Cook & Love Books Tours for the free digital copy ~

This is easily joining my list of favourite reads this year.

As soon as I finished the first chapter I was utterly hooked and knew this was going to be a great book. The writing was completely addictive; the language to me was believable for the Victorian era and had me more immersed into the characters' world the further in the story I got. I also became obsessed with the lines of alliteration that were littered throughout— it's obvious Sarah has a born talent for creative writing and honestly, I am jealous.

The plot for this intrigued me and it did not disappoint, if anything it was even better than I could have hoped for. It felt so creative and unique, it was dark, mysterious and so gripping. Some parts were tough to read (please check TWs before picking this up) but this was obviously intentional and didn't take away from the general story. I loved how every chapter would start with diary entries and we didn't get to find out who these were from until the end, of which the plot twists had my head spinning, in a good way.

I found Miriam and John likeable considering the dark side to their personalities; they were fascinating and really well written and thought out. I loved the slow burn romance between them both, I don't think the rest of the story would have worked as well if they had jumped straight into their relationship.

Overall, this was an easy 5 star read for me and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy dark romances with plenty of smut, mysteries and twists. I didn't think a story like this set in the Victorian age would be my thing but I've definitely been proved wrong with Diary of Murders.

Victorian fiction is not a genre I've delved into very often, add in the dark murder & dark romance aspects and this was a completely new style of book for me, I honestly had no idea what to expect. I was pulled right into this story from the beginning, the character of Miriam being the main reason, I found her fascinating and a breathe of fresh air for the time this story was set in.

The flow of this book worked really well for me, the author rotated between the diary entries (with very graphic details of the murders) and the growing relationship between Miriam and John (with lots of spice), this kept me engaged and interested in the story and I found myself addicted needing to get to the end. I was kept guessing to the very end of this book, never sure of what would happen next or what the truth was.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, it was a quick engaging & unique read, full of suspense, mystery, darkness and spice. I would advise to read the trigger warnings before reading. Also on that note I have to acknowledge that the author did a great job with the trigger warnings and adding links to charities relevant to the story at the end, a brilliant touch.

This kind of book isn’t normally my cup of team, however I did thoroughly enjoy it. It did take me longer than normal to finish but that’s ok! Sexy. Funny. Devastating at times. Full of twists and turns. It ends with a sense of hope despite the violence and horror experienced by the MCs.

What the?! In a good way! Love this! It is steamy. It has a slow burn. It is rebellion. It is murderous. It is revenge. It is life rebuilding. This story has so many great elements. I thought it was one thing, and it completely took me by surprise. More than once! Miriam is a smart, strong, dominant woman in a time when they were told to be a shadow. She goes through such life-changing times in a short amount of time. The chapters were a little long and felt like they could have been broken down into smaller ones. However, this didn’t affect the story overall; it was more of an observation. I am abso-effing-lutely buying this. Easily one of my new favorites.
