I tend to read these books out of order. I recently finished reading about Ian’s unexpected romance. In this book and a few others there is mention of Spencer and the fiancé that he loved very deeply who died tragically. At one point there was mention that Spencer wasn’t over her and would probably never love again. So here I am, just ready to fall in love with Spencer Westmoreland…..

I’m not sure what happened here. I’m not sure what editor read this and thought that it was romance. I’ve come to regard the Westmoreland men as something kinda special. Like a standard that other book men should try and live up to. Spencer however was a complete and total asshole.
He literally takes one look at Chardonnay and decides that he wants to make her his wife and the mother of his children. Not because he loves her but because she’s beautiful and he thinks that he should have her. So what does our hero do? Does he “woo” her? Pursue her vigorously? Stalk her maybe?

He blackmails her. Literally within two days of meeting Chardonnay, he blackmails her (now if that ain’t romance……). Her family is in danger of losing their vineyard. When Chardonnay attempts to find other financial backing Asshole Westmoreland lets her know that he is the guarantor of that loan and will still shut them down if she doesn’t marry him. (Anyone in love yet?)

From there things just go way downhill. There are points where he just grabs her kissing and touching her without her permission. He tells her to do things and when she balks Asshole lets her know that it wasn’t a question – Chardonnay has no choice if she wants to save her family’s vineyard.

Then things just get really creepy. Donnay tells her mom and family the whole story behind she and Spencer’s relationship and they actually approve. I mean her mom and grandmother try to tell her that she doesn’t have to do this. That there has to be another way but outside of that they allow things to carry on. They keep Asshole Westmoreland in the highest of regards and never say a negative word to or about him. As a parent, words cannot describe what my reaction would be if I found out that my child was being blackmailed. It certainly wouldn’t be the unrealistic bullshit that took place in this book.

Sure Ms. Jackson (the author) did things to try and get us to like Spencer. He formed a bond with Donnay’s ailing grandfather. This led to him expanding the vineyard in an effort to fulfill the old man’s dreams. This would’ve been endearing had he not been blackmailing the man’s beloved granddaughter.

Somehow Chardonnay manages to fall in love with this POS. Call it Stockholm Syndrome if you like. Then we find out that her MIA dad never knew that she existed. He has now found out that she exists and wants to be there for her. This is where I start to actually like the book. Unfortunately it’s the last chapter.

MIA dad anonymously gives the family one million dollars and Asshole Westmoreland has a hissy fit. And I do mean a hissy fit. I think he even stamps his foot and puts his hands on his hips. He accuses her of being a whore and talks about how she never loved him and planned to play him all along. Um so let me get this straight…. You’re mad because the person who you are blackmailing has found a way to get from under you? And you feel betrayed? What the actual fuck?

MIA dad then confronts Asshole Westmoreland. What I didn’t like about this was that we (the readers) were not privy to this conversation. We can tell that MIA dad is upset and that he and Spencer have a conversation but we don’t get to know the details. It’s just mentioned that MIA dad is not happy with his daughter being railroaded and Asshole Westmoreland agrees.
Spencer then professes his love for Chardonnay and HEA begins.

I am really glad that this was not the first Westmoreland book that I had read because I can assure you that it would’ve been the last. I’m going to take a break from the Westmorelands for now because I simply cannot.

The Wonderful World of Forbidden Passion

Since discovering Mrs. Jackson's Westmoreland Series, I have to say I wouldn't miss reading one for any reason, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the novels I have missed in this series. So, this is ONLY the fifth Westmoreland novel I've read and although it was a very passionate read it wasn't my favorite. I've read "A Little Dare", "Delaney's Desert Sheikh", "Thorn's Challenge", and "Seduction, Westmoreland Style" and I have to say I think they were much more entertaining than this particular novel. And for some odd reason I didn't develop that "BOND" with the main characters of this novel, as I did in her previous Westmoreland novels. Spencer and Chardonnay still had that intensely HEATED attraction that Mrs. Jackson is so famous for portraying throughout her novels. However, I think I missed the Westmoreland-Style family interaction and/or their caring interference that they usually display and provide throughout one of these tales (at least the few I've read). I guess considering the quick proposal of marriage and the reasoning behind it, I thought Spencer's family would have more of a play in this story, especially considering how serious they are about marriage and commitment. And personally, I have to say I wasn't crazy about the heroine's first name, I understand where and why she was named Chardonnay, I just didn't like it (just my own personal pet peeve about people being named after liquors, cars, etc...). However, I definitely preferred her full name to Donnay! That being said, Brenda Jackson is still the MASTER at writing a quick, sweet, romantic tale of "Forbidden Passion" in less than 200 pages. Definitely a RECOMMENDED read!

Indecent Proposal

We meet Chardonnay Russell. Her family owns the Russell Vineyard, a vineyard known for making a quality product that has fallen on financial hardships. Spencer Westmoreland enters the picture with a proposal that will end all of the family’s worries. But there is one catch, another proposal. He will help the Russells out only if Chardonnay agrees to marry him and bear his children. Is Chardonnay willing to commit to a loveless marriage in order to save her family’s vineyard? Will she succumb to Spencer’s forbidden passion?

As with all the others in the Westmoreland series, “Spencer’s Forbidden Passion” is a charming love story told only the way Brenda Jackson can.

1.5 stars because some parts I didn't totally dislike. But…

A winemaker who calls her daughter Chardonnay? Puhleeze.

As for the "hero," Spencer's an asshole. He blackmails/bulldozes Donnay into agreeing to a loveless marriage of convenience. That's not romantic in the least. And while it works in some HPs, it didn't work here. Not to mention the fact that he believes the worst of her without giving her the benefit of the doubt.

2 stars. There was no love to be found here. Just annoying characters, manipulation and blackmail. I hated Spencer with a passion. There was nothing redeemable about him and the way he went about everything was wrong. Chardonnay started off strong but got worse as the story went on. There was no chemistry, no romance and it all just left me annoyed. The worst book in the series without a doubt.

I really disliked this book. I have read the Westmoreland books, some out of sequence, and the first few books I enjoyed.

I did not like Spencer. I don't care how he was hurt in the past. I don't care what his trust issues were based on that hurt. He was an arrogant, rude, aggressive bully. I didn't like Chardonnay, although I could understand some of her anger. Spencer and Chardonnay's "relationship" was not a match made in heaven.

There was nothing sweet, romantic, or sexy about being blackmailed into marriage. It's one thing to offer someone a business deal and let him/her make a decision. It is another thing when you offer a deal and that person doesn't do what you want, your plan is to screw them over.

I honestly could not find anything in this book that I liked. I am both surprised and disappointed. Even when Chardonnay found out her mother's secret, the entire situation was ridiculous. Was she so desperate to be loved by someone that she accepted a person with NO hesitation?

I don't know if Spencer's language or his type of communication was considered flowery or not, but it was too much. Spencer actually said to Chardonnay, "Welcome to my world of forbidden passion." , Come on fam. Who speaks that way?

I'm not going to go on. I had been on a Brenda Jackson binge, trying to read books I had on my TBR list. I just can't go on. I am so glad I read those first Westmoreland books. At least those men seemed to have some personality. It didn't feel like a cookie cutter book where every issue was resolve in 3 days to a couple of weeks. Even if the issues in those first books were resolved in the same period of time, I never felt like I was rushed through a story.

Reading the last few books by this writer that I have read only served to make me frustrated, disappointed, and sad. My hope is that future books will evoke some of the same feelings I got from reading the earlier Westmoreland books.

Somewhat disappointed!
Over the years I have read and loved close to 30-40 of Miss Jackson's novels, (Whispered Promises) is my all time favorite. This book, (Spencer), not so much!
I absolutely hated Spencer Westmoreland and his selfish arrogance. His constant TELLING Chardonnay what He wanted without any concern about how SHE wanted her life to play out.
I understood Chardonnay's willingness to sacrifice her own happiness to save her family's Napa Valley Wine business. She loved and appreciated her grandparents that much. However, I was extremely disappointed that she didn't state some rules and boundaries, in this relationship, that she could live with, rather than giving in so easily to what Spencer dictated!

For some strange reason i find that this book was not the best, although I did see the connection the characters had. In the story, Donnay was struggling to keep her property and Spencer came in and "helped her get it back" Again I feel like I am reading the same books, this story had the same plot as Hidden Pleasures(Steele). Overall It was a really good read but can we get another kind of plot please

Too Much

Spencer Westmoreland doesn't portray the Westmoreland charm in his early pursuit of Chardonnay Russell. Instead he acts like a tyrant with little regard for how she feels. This set the mood for the entire story and garnered feelings of dislike that lingered to the story's end. Here is one Happy ending that lacked conviction.

Probably the most underrated Westmoreland novel I’ve read thus far. It had drama, romance and mystery not to mention some suspense. It was very hard to like Spencer in the beginning but I guess midway he grows on you.

Writing the review on 3-29-21 sooo :X

I'm pretty damn sure I listened to this book 2x. In fact possible 3, but not as certain about that, so I'm leaving it at 2x...
So - an audiobook read...

I do actually remember a little about Spencer and Chardonnay - I can't remember ... about all her relatives? :X
I know... her ... [mom?] was still alive - or a grandfather?
Someone elderly and there were health concerns?
And a loan at issue too...

Ohhhh right. This is the one with the

Spencer was clearly smitten but goes about everything in basically the worst way, IIRC - and he's a giant asshat.
... He keeps holding the money over he head too ...
So yeah - while I can't rate or review this with accuracy I'm calling it as something that was in the D range.

Out of all of Brenda Jackson's Westmoreland men, Spencer, undoubtedly, is the least likeable...in the beginning, that is. He slowly grows on the reader, though, just as he does with his co-protagonist Chardonnay Russell, who hates him with a passion initially but, for some reason, cannot resist his sexual prowess EVER. The fate of the Russell Vineyards, Chardonnay's happiness, even Grandpa Russell's health, rest in the arrogant, but capable, hands of Spencer Westmoreland. How all of this plays out forms the foundation for "Spencer's Forbidden Passion"--another of Jackson's titillating confections of formulaic romance, lust, and angst, with a sprinkle of plot tossed in the mix.

Wanted More

SPENCER WESTMORELAND What can I say. At the start of this story he struck me as the Most Arrogant, Controlling , underhanded of all the Westmoreland men. In short I disliked him a great deal. However by the end of this brief story Spencer, had me smiling.

It was ok, but it just felt weird the determination he had to marry her after just one look at her. I didn't particularly enjoy how combative heroine was but was understandable with how determined hero was. Np.

Spencer and Chardonnay were a cute fit. She hated him at first. Like his brothers and cousins, he thought he would be able to get away with his heart intact.
Really enjoyed this book.

This is one of Brenda Jackson’s books…. I just couldn’t relate. I did not care for Spencer Westmoreland, although he was wealthy, he was arrogant, egotistic, controlling, and downright spoiled. Then there is Chardonnay Russell that stood in the way of him purchasing her families vineyard. It was crazy and made no sense to me. Although Chardonnay fought against his advances, I was mad that she gave into him. It was blackmail and manipulation. Anytime someone gives you a proposal with an ultimatum, I call it blackmail and manipulation. To me, Spencer had a alter motive from the start and although he fell in love with Chardonnay, he couldn’t separate the two. Control is all he knew to get what he wanted including love.

This was not a love match. I call it two horny individuals with an arranged transaction. He bought, she sold. I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars, it was well written, but the whole situation just did not make any sense to me for a romance novel. Yes, this passion was definitely forbidden. NO! I will
not read it again. I am just done with this story.

Cast:
• Jason Derulo as Spencer Westmoreland
• Jasmine Sanders as Chardonnay Russell

Spencer Westmoreland is wealthy, shrewd, intelligent, persistent, ruthless, intimidating, demanding and “fine as any man has a right to be”!!!! His character was a little too much for me to embrace at times, but only Ms. Jackson could pull this off. Spencer saw what he wanted and using any means necessary, he went after it. Chardonnay Russell stood between him and the land he wanted. Remove the barrier and get the land … right? Very simple solution. Well, this astute mogul didn’t count on falling in love with his adversary. Spencer gave Chardonnay a proposal that would save her family’s vineyard and assure them financial stability. Well, as fate would have it, cupid intervened and this consummate businessman was knocked to his knees.

Spencer's Forbidden Passion is yet another fantastic read from the very talented Brenda Jackson. I will admit that my first thoughts about Spencer were not favorable. I couldn't believe he had the nerve to order Chardonnay to marry him, but as I got more into the story, I realized how much I loved his character. Both characters are well-developed and highly entertaining. Not quite sure how Brenda Jackson keeps coming up with these amazing characters and storylines, but I hope they never end. As long as Brenda Jackson keeps writing, I will keep buying!
