This review is for the CEO out there who is looking to transform their organization. Back in 2008, I became a CEO for the first time, and quickly appointed a Chief of Staff - though I didn’t know it at the time. With a military background, I knew I needed the classic XO who could wrangle the other C-levels, serve as a trusted advisor, and be my eyes and ears in the field. I titled the position VP of Corporate Initiatives - but what I created was a Chief of Staff - and in 15 years, I’ve maintained that successful model largely unchanged, and won’t be changing it anytime soon.
In her exceptional book, Emily Sander will help you, the CEO or other C-Level executive, understand WHAT a Chief of Staff is, WHY you need one, and HOW to find and use one. This position - long a staple in government and the military - is only beginning to see acceptance in the private sector. This is the time to look at your organization, your challenges and your priorities and learn how an effective CoS can change your company and career.
Emily hits the nail on the head in this well written, concise and valuable book. She’s been in the trenches as a CoS, including working as the CoS at one of the companies where I was serving as CEO at the time. Her performance was exceptional, and the suggestions and observations she makes here are based on real world experience - including the lessons and stories.
As a CEO, you need to at least consider how this role can benefit your organization. And if you are an aspiring CoS or CEO, you can learn from one of the best in the business on how to use this role to improve your company performance and drive your career to the next level. This book will do that. A must read.
Interesting since when you hear the term you think of the White House. Not sure really what to make of this short book other than it wants to justify the role in a more expanded view for todays business environment.
Being in charge is a hard job. This book is a must for anyone in a leadership role. It doesn’t just give sound advice but it gives the reasoning behind the advice and examples from former COS workers.
Thought this was really well written, and easy to digest. I appreciated how well laid out the chapters were and how useful the information is. I feel like this book has given me a good set of tools to get started with in my new role
This is a good basic overview of the role of CoS. I understand more about the role after reading the book. I wish the author drilled down a little deeper in some areas.
