DANTE: I’ve got the job of my dreams, more money than I know what to do with, and a beautiful woman on my arm. What more could a guy ask for?
To be able to stop lying to the world maybe? But I’ve spent most of my life lying… why should I stop now?
However It’s always when life gets comfortable that your world gets flipped upside down.
Now I have someone trying to expose my deepest secret to the world and possibly trying to kill me, but that’s not the worst part.
No, the worst part is the sexy bodyguard who is now my permanent shadow. Nixon is fucking perfection and I’m pretty sure he is the key to my undoing.
NIXON: I’ve worked with lots of celebrities but none of them had me losing my resolve and making my hand twitch like Dante Michaelson.
Dante is everything I’ve ever wanted in a man, a brat who would look fantastic bent over my knees with a red ass. Of course he is so deep in the closet he’s made friends with the dust bunnies.
I should push Dante away and assign him a different bodyguard, but I can’t. The moment my eyes land on him all I want to do is protect him, while also fixing that smart mouth of his.
Falling for Dante might be the most dangerous thing I have ever faced. My heart is now on the line.
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes & tags down below. I hate asshole clients. Unfortunately, even dicks need protection.
I wanna review this as objectively as possible, because even though I didn’t love it, I imagine most people will. There is a lot to love here, but unfortunately the writing didn’t work for me. I was super excited by the tropes as it sounded like it would be the perfect book for me, but I wasn’t able to connect with the story or characters on an emotional level. It was sort of a bit too shallow, only surface level. I could recognize the important and emotional moments in the book, but I couldn’t *feel* them.
The actor MC, Dante, started off prickly and closed off, which definitely made sense for his story, and it made me excited to see him open up with Nixon, which he also did. Unfortunately, he still came off as shallow and quite rude even by the end of the book, which was unfortunate. Not necessarily a bad thing for everyone, but not my favorite vibe.
This book does get half a star extra for the safe representation of BDSM and good communication about limits and expectations, as well as the lovely focus on aftercare, though. I have been spoiled by reading some really good spicy scenes lately, so this one landed on the lower end of the spectrum for me. There’s something about a man who exudes confidence and finesse to the public eye but is pouting for me that turns me on.
If you enjoy these tropes and themes, I would still recommend giving it a try, as we all like different writing, and even though this was a miss for me, maybe it will be a massive hit for you.

Okay, so the first thing is first I did enjoy this book. it was very fast-paced, a good bit was going on and I felt like I couldn't put the book down because I was invested in the book. I enjoyed it and I am glad I picked it up. I loved the two main characters, they were very cool/interesting characters and I loved them together, I felt they balanced each out very well. The mystery or main plot line was cool, I was on my toes for a good bit.
But let me explain my main issue with the book, which are my opinions so please keep that in mind. I felt that the book was too fast-paced, I did not really feel the emotions between the two main characters. The passion/chemistry was there but I felt it was so quick. One minute they have an issue with each other, the next they are exploring a D/s relationship (which was hot by the way) and then they were in love. But when you are reading it, it is like chapter to chapter. one chapter, was them explaining it was just sex, and then in the next chapter, they were basically in love with each other. I only felt the friends w/ benefits chemistry/passion and then I sort of felt the in-love feelings. It just seemed to be moving so fast and then it was this very quick-paced happy ending which was really cute but like boom in your face.
Another issue for me, which can be seen as minor or nitpicky, was that the transitions were not smooth and they felt awkward. so it is very fast-paced so a lot is going on and while you are reading it just seems some of the things the characters do are just out of nowhere, for example Dante would just be talking to his bestie, and then boom he is bursting out crying. there was no build-up to this emotion. Or
Overall, I did enjoy this story and i will read the Denvers story (he is a very cool guy).
This book was a nice, easy read for me. It's a bodyguard x actor romance with insta love, a good representation of kink (and how to be safe), as well as addressing mental health and religious trauma in queer folk.
Laura John did an excellent job with this one, and I was lucky that I got to read it. For me, it was relatively low angst, but I know some people would find the situations angsty. There is, of course, a HEA and if you're looking for something cute, sweet, and short to fit in on your TBR, this is definitely the one.
Laura is also a local Alberta author, so of course I couldn't help but support her!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I saw the promo for book two and really love the trope there - but I wanted to start at the beginning.
I DNFd this - but it’s because the kink part of their relationship (specifically the repeated use of “brat” & their particular D/s dynamic) isn’t my thing.
I liked the main part of the story and the author’s overall style, so I’m still going to check out book 2.
"I need to stop thinking about him like that. The last thing I will be doing is falling for my bodyguard. I’ll appreciate his god-like looks, but that is as far as I will let it go."
Nixon by Laura John was the firstbook I've read from this new-to-me author and I really enjoyed it! It's the first in the author's Hunter Security series and this is Nixon (surprise, surprise!) and Dante's story.
Dante is a closeted movie star and Nixon is the principal of the security firm assigned to protect him, after an attempt on his life.
This is an adventure/thriller/romance with some nice twists and turns and a little bit of steam added into the mix.
I'm excited for the next instalment in the series.
Tropes:
🖤MM romance 🖤Forced proximity 🖤Opposites attract 🖤Bodyguard/movie star 🖤HEA
Laura John has done it again. Nixon and Dante were such a great introduction to the new Hunter Security series. Laura John really has some of the best romantic suspense books that make me wonder what’s going to happen next and wonder who did it. I can’t want to see Nixon and Dante again in Denver’s book.
I wish the blurb of this book was more accurate to its content. I was hoping for a bodyguard romance with tension and passion. Instead, I got a seminar on BDSM basics and another boring dom/brat dynamic.
I usually steer away from “brats” because most books represent them as “poor decision making asshole moody teens”. Rarely, does an author write them smart and sassy. This book was no exception.
I found myself not liking either character at almost the halfway mark and couldn’t push myself to care about the nonexistent stalker plot to continue.
I havnt read a bodyguard romance in ages and I really enjoyed this one! Nixon is the first in the Hunter Security series and follows its namesake as he takes on a personal protection contract for Dante, an actor who has just barely escaped being murdered and immediately sparks fly between the two.
Expect:
* Romantic Suspense * Bodyguard romance * Age Gap * Forced Proximity * Size Difference * Low Angst * Hurt Comfort * Closeted Celebrity * Religious Trauma * Found family * D/s dynamic * Kink exploration: O-control, C0ck warming, Marking, Impact Play, Bondage, Edging
This was an interesting book for me to read. The first half is mostly action packed and there is a whole lot of animosity from Dante’s end which creates major sparks where these two are concerned, while the attraction they feel is shimmering under the surface till they given into it and it results in explosive chemistry and Dante is an eager first time explorer of kink with Nixon who is more experienced. I did take a minute to get invested in the characters because their emotional connect isn’t yet at the forefront of the story with everything that’s happening but mid way I started rooting for them as the author slowly starts peeling back the layers with these MCs. Dante upbringing still haunts him, he is struggling with the betrayals he is uncovering and his found family is everything to him- he is a sweet person under the prickly exterior he shows and Nixon is realising there is a lot more to Dante than he first thought and he slowly becoming way more attached than they agreed.
One of the things that stood out was the the way the story is developed is unique and doesn’t follow a set pattern and there are emotional and imminent challenges that they are trying to overcome as the plot develops. Their D/s dynamic with loads of consent was also another thing that felt organic to their over all story.
CW: There is a detailed list provided by the author on their website
There’s just something about the way this author writes a story that sucks you in. No, M/M isn’t my normal cup of tea. But I find myself enthralled in Laura’s couples every darn time, so I keep coming back for more. Nixon and Dante are no exception. Well, maybe they are. Because I think I like them the best so far. We have an excellent tie-in to another much-loved couple (Dax and Izzy), best friends and family by choice who love and support, and the absolute best takedown of hateful bigots in the end.
Dante and his anguish over being allowed to be who he is really grabbed me this time around. He’s not ashamed of his true self, but he is afraid of disappointing people. So he’s kept closeted to this point. But he has to decide if he’s up for losing who could be his future just to keep the peace with those who don’t deserve a shred of his loyalty. Luckily, he is able to find his peace and balance with the help of his closest friends, as well as an excellent new ally in Amara, and his friend-with-therapy-benefits, Mel. It also helps that Nixon is unafraid of a life with Dante, because they definitely deserve happiness aster all that tries to destroy them.
This story is a feel good read all about love, friendship, loyalty, trust, and finding your way toward the happiness you deserve in life. And I wouldn’t want this to go any other way.
Decent enough story but it felt like we missed out on getting to know much about Nixon or Dante's personalities. Their attraction only ever seemed physical and sexual which seemed superficial. It also seemed very rushed at the end with a very 'this, this and this happened' way of writing instead of showing us these things. I'll try the next book in the series and hope it's better.
Also, and this is a personal thing some may not mind, I don't like when things like this being about a dom/sub, age gap (although this was barely touched on) aren't clarified in the description. It doesn't seem fair to waste time for people who have issues with certain aspects to not give fair warning up front.
I stayed up until 2 AM to finish this book so clearly it wasn't bad.
That being said, it reads kind of like fanfiction- not necessarily in a bad way! There just wasn't really a ton of background information on anything, and everyone except Nixon and Dante just felt like plot devices. Also that's probably part of why it felt so easy to get absorbed in it and just power through. There weren't any parts where I was like "Holy crap, what's gonna happen? I need a minute to absorb this!"
It was a nice bit of brain candy, pretty standard fluff, but if you're hoping for anything other than a straightforward romance, you're not gonna get it.
This series promises some angst, and I know I'll regret it later, but I need to read some angst-y things right now. Here's Laura John's Hunter Security series. The first novel is "Nixon." ["Secrets always find a way to come to light…

THIS. This is what I needed! Angst and risks and hurt/comfort and broken hearts and me sobbing and people being assholes and Nixon saving the day and Dante feeling save (and himself). Something cute and fluffy and sweet, but with depth and desperation. Something with stakes and third act break-ups and sure, communication and safe/sane/consensual sex (very in-depth conversations about kink and kink safety and trust), but all in all, this book refused to be put down.
Also, I was toooootally convinced that person XYZ was at fault for targeting and harming Dante. I was wrong. I'm not sure if I'm glad I was wrong, because that person is a nice person; or sad, because it would have made a fucking great plot twist.
Trigger Warnings: drugging, breaking and entering, homophobia, horrible parents, violence against a gay man, guns, religious trauma, closeted character, forced outing, and more.
Nixon, the first book in the new Hunter Security series by Laura John is an action-packed, MM romantic suspense story featuring an emotional journey of self-acceptance in the face of unimaginable vitriol and prejudice. Someone either wants to expose Dante’s deepest secrets or kill him all together. When he meets his new bodyguard, everything changes. He suddenly isn’t satisfied with the facade life he has allowed himself. With danger lurking around him, he sees the possibility of life-altering passion and more with Nixon. Is he brave enough to face his oppressors in order to take a chance at happiness?
Admittedly, this book won’t be for everyone with its heavy dose of kink depicted in a D/s relationship, as well as the super-charged emotional topics discussed around religion and bigotry. However, this author always has a way of handling sensitive topics in an empathetic and relatable way that draws the reader in and has you rooting for the characters in no time. This story was fast-paced with plenty of action, great characters, and an intriguing suspense plot that even had me suspicious of someone that was innocent!🤪 And the spice? My goodness! After this one, I might have to start adding a scale for that to my reviews, because they were throwing serious sparks!! I think Denver’s story is next, and it should be interesting.
I received an advanced review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Nixon by Laura John is the first book in the Hunter Security Series. This MM bodyguard romance story is about Nixon and Dante.
Dante is a famous actor who finds himself in the hospital after someone tried to kill him. With this threat to his life, he is forced to hire a bodyguard for protection until they are able to find the person responsible for his attempted murder. Nixon, who started Hunter Security when he got out of the Army ten years ago, is taking on the role of Dante's bodyguard.
Dante is immediately attracted to Nixon, but won't let him in since he is in the closet and only a handful of people close to him know he is gay. He acts like the biggest brat, and in my opinion he was a little immature with his behavior toward Nixon. Nixon is attracted to Dante, but he does his best to not get distracted by him and is willing to do what it takes to protect Dante. After a failed attempted break-in, Dante needs Nixon to move in with him to feel safe. It's with this forced proximity, along with Dante pushing Nixon's buttons, when things finally turn heated between the two of them. They have a discussion and come to an agreement for Dante to explore kink with Nixon. Before long, they are both falling for each other even though they didn't plan on it.
What I enjoyed about this story was the suspense and trying to figure out who was out to get Dante. Dante had such an awful upbringing, and he had so much to overcome. Nixon was so patient and understanding. I do admit that I wasn't into these characters as much as I hoped, and I think for me I had a hard time with their connection and how quickly their relationship progressed. With that being said, it was a good story and I am interested to read Denver's story next.
My first read from John, and I do love the little universe she's created, even if I feel it was slightly cliched in places.
The overall storyline of this book had me hooked. Dante, his fear and all his internalization over everything. It was so realistic and so wonderfully written. The alpha nature of Nixon, wanting to do nothing but protect Dante. Dante's coming out story - because let's face it, that's what this book was truly about. John wrote the mental health side of thing well, I won't deny.
But on the flipside, there were a few things that didn't hit the mark for me. The insta-lust/love. I struggled to believe it, honestly. I also struggled to feel any chemistry between Dante and Nixon. But I needed the resolution to Dante's issues/story. The relationship as a whole just sat very... oddly with me -- the D/s relationship that was kinda there but not really. They rushed into discussions around limits and kinks - which that conversation in itself felt very rushed - but then... it all just kind of got lost. There was the "punishment" - which read very awkwardly to me, to be honest - but otherwise I feel the D/s dynamic mentioned was thrown in for the sake of, well, filler content. I feel I may be alone there, but it's my honest opinion.
I loved the introduction of the other members of the security team - and the obvious hint that their stories would follow in the series - and the general comradery between the team - and Dante's inclusion in it. I loved the side storyline of Anna's troubles, too.
Nixon is a new series by Laura John based on bodyguards at Hunter Security. Book one focuses on the boss, Nixon as he takes on the case of Dante, film star and now with a threat to his life. Both feel that zing of attraction when they lock eyes in Dante's hospital room but Dante is Nixon's client and Dante is in the darkest corner of the closet so they couldn't be more wrong for each other. Add in Dante's stubbornness against having a bodyguard and they don't get off to the best of starts. However, that bratty streak appeals to Nixon and when circumstances have them sharing even closer quarters, that need explodes between them to something hot and necessary. They are perfectly matched apart from Dante's refusal to come out. The case that brought them together gets intense and crazy as it takes forever for a breakthrough and then it's a surprising and painful revelation that moves things forwards. The story has a great cast of characters as well. Anna is Dante's best friend and "girlfriend", she's more family to him than his parents are. Then with Nixon, he has a brilliant group of people who work for him at the security company. I can't wait to read more on them soon. An intense romance that has a hurt/comfort element with regards to the attempted murder and ensuing events. The relationship is an opposites attract, age gap with a BDSM side that make both men very happy. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
If Laura John has one fan that fan is me!! Laura John just knows how to write the perfect mix of plot and smut!! This is my third book of hers this year and this one is one of my favorites!
Nixon is about an actor named Dante who is keeping a major secret from the world and he is drugged on by someone who is trying to hurt him. After being hospitalized, Nixon is hired to be Dante’s hot bodyguard. While trying to protect Dante from the evil of the world, Nixon finds out that someone in his life continues to hurt him because he is gay.
I loved Dante and Nixon’s relationship. Dante is such a brat and Nixon just eats it up. I loved Dante and Nixon Dom/Sub relationship. All of the spicy scenes were definitely spicy! I loved that Dante likes to be called Treasure while they are in their scenes because he never felt like that in past relationships or by his parents.
“Maybe, I like being a Brat!”
I really appreciated all of the mental health aspects including Dante’s therapy and showing it’s okay to seek help when you have gone through some trauma! I really liked that Nixon never shied away from helping Dante. I loved Anna and Dante’s friendship! I loved all of the side characters including Denver! I’m excited for his book!
Laura John has written another banger!
Thank you Laura John and Chaotic Creatives for the ARC!
Dante Michaelson is a movie star doing the job of his dreams, with more money than he needs and a beautiful woman on his arm. However, he is lying to the world and that means as his world is comfortable his life will be flipped upside down. He has someone trying to kill him and trying to expose his deepest secret to the world and he now has a bodyguard called Nixon - he is perfection and will be the key to his undoing. Nixon has worked with many celebrities but none have made his hand twitch like Dante who is everything he ever wanted in a man and also a brat who would look fantastic bent over his knee with a red ass. But he is very much in the closet. He knows he should assign Dante a different bodyguard but he can't. Falling for Dante might be the most dangerous thing that Nixon has ever done.
I loved this story which had plenty of heat between the two men while there were swirling levels of drama and danger around Dante who was such a brat that he made everyone's life difficult. I loved his best friend Anna who was his protector until he realised how selfish he was and insisted she be herself. There were a lot of thoughts, feelings and emotions in this story and they were all clear and easy to feel and understand. I loved this story and the way it easily resonated with me as the reader. This is an MM story with mature content and a BSDM-like D/s relationship.
I Loved this book from cover to cover. Sure there were moments when I wanted to bop Dante’s head and tell our young star to get his crap together, but at the same time I found his self-inflicted imprisonment so understandable. From the outside, Dante has it all. He’s a sought after actor, has millions in the bank and lives a lush life. But behind closed doors he’s lonely and tired of living a lie. Then when a stalker is out to kill him if he doesn’t reveal his secrets his world gets totally chaotic. His manager and BFF hire a security team to keep him safe and find the culprit who is out to destroy him. In walks Nixon, the bodyguard that Dante fights at every turn because he doesn’t want a full time babysitter. Especially not one that is tall, sexy and everything he wants and can’t have.
Dante and Nixon’s chemistry is absolute perfection and their banter is off the rails. But as the dangers get closer can they find a way to keep Dante safe or will exposure destroy everything around him? I highly recommend grabbing up Nixon, Book 1 in the Hunter Security Series and as for this reader, I can’t wait for book 2 to hit the shelves. Kudos Ms. John for a well written, exciting MM Romance.
Dante was adorable. He was feisty, stubborn and exactly the kind of brat I love. Nixon turned out to be an excellent brat tamer. This book takes an interesting look at being forced to come out and dealing with the repercussions of that. I love that therapy played a huge role in helping Dante learn to deal with his religious trauma. Nixon does all he can to help Dante and I loved them together.
I will say this, the relationship between Nixon and Dante is almost too easy. Like, Dante is 100% against this person one day, and falling into a D/s dynamic with them the next. Once Dante comes out to Nixon, it’s like a given that they would start something. It gave me a bit of whiplash and I wish their relationship had started a little more organically.
There is definitely some spice to be had and I really enjoyed. I think my favorite part, though, was Nixon’s aftercare. He was so gentle and caring and really looked out for Dante’s wellbeing. We get to see the relationship really grow into something with a strong foundation. This was a very enjoyable read and I’m really looking forward to the next in the series.
The last thing closeted actor Dante Michaelson wants or needs is a bodyguard, especially one as attractive as Nixon, but after someone makes an attempt on Dante's life, it becomes a necessity. Dante is just the kind of man Nixon is attracted to, a brat that tempts him to break all his rules. They get close fast, but they can't forget that someone is intent on outing Dante.
I really liked Dante and Nixon, they had great chemistry, even if they fall for each other at lightning speed. It makes sense since they had the whole D/s dynamic in place, and these types of relationships usually move very fast.
I really liked Anna, she was a fantastic friend. I also liked Denver and I'm very intrigued about his story.
This was a very fast-paced, entertaining bodyguard-movie star romantic suspense, with age gap and some light BDSM. While I would've liked the romance to be more gradual, I still enjoyed it and the search for the person that was messing up with Dante was quite interesting as well. Recommendable!

Laura gives us another amazing couple in this first book of her Hunter Security series.
Dante pulled at my heartstrings. As I read through the book, I could feel the emotions he was suppressing, trying to please everyone while being afraid to disappoint anyone. He is so worried about everyone else that he will not let himself be the open and true person he is meant to be. He is as far in the closet as he can be, and he needs to support and guidance of Nixon to step out and claim the life he wants. Nixon is all that and a bag of chips. Dominate when he needs to be and emotional and soft when that is needed. He is Dante's protector and mentor. He does not let Dante's bratty attitude deter him from keeping him safe in and out of the bedroom.
This book has it all. It has suspense, emotion, and STEAM! It takes you through Dante and Nixon's journey to get their HEA. Laura does not sugarcoat the ups and downs of their emotions or the prejudices they face being in this relationship. This was a page-turner, and I cannot wait for the next installment of this series.
A super sexy bodyguard takes on a bratty Hollywood star. Yum.
Dante is as bratty as they come, and when he’s forced to hire a bodyguard who ticks all his closeted boxes he’s determined to drive Nixon to quit.
Luckily for him, Nixon is especially good at getting this brat to be good and follow the rules.
These two are a lot of fun, but Dante, especially, is dealing with a lot from his upbringing which gives them both a lot to work through. And through it all, you see the warm and loving people they are. Sometimes hidden behind a mask, but ready to shine bright.
I’m glad Dante learned to trust and love himself enough to let go of what others may think because he and Nixon deserve amazing things.
This is the first book in a new series about bodyguards, and I can’t wait for the rest.
She has done it again!! I say it every time but I absolutely adore this author. I loved this book!
This is a first book in a series. We follow Dante who is a movie star and on a red carpet event with his “girlfriend” someone tries to murder him. Some one else knows his secret. The secret he only told a handful of people. He’s gay. Since this event he is forced to hire a body guard that he immediately falls for. He has only been with two men he doesn’t want his secret to get out so he hides it from the world even his parents. But there is a reason for that.
Then one night someone tries to break into Dante’s home while Nixon his bodyguard is there. They call the police and the person is nowhere to be found. Nixon gets him a hotel and dante expressed that he doesn’t want to be alone so Nixon agrees to stay with him and that’s when the kink starts! Throughout the book Dante presses Nixon a buttons and enjoys doing it. The banter between these to is to good. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This book was a fantastic read. It got me hooked from the very beginning.
Even though Dante was closeted gay man and pretending to date woman, he dated his best friend, his lesbian best friend who already has girlfriend and Dante didn't do casual hook-ups, he only has 2 ex boyfriends. Those things were what liked about Dante and made his story more enjoyable.
Their Dom/sub dynamic were light, their kinky relationship was okay not too much or over the top.
I hope Nixon's fellow bodyguards like Knox and Bennett will get their own happy ending.
Bennett was still single and Knox had crush on his brother's best friend who moved back after he left three years ago to serve with Doctors Without Borders.
Denver's story is next. From what I read, Denver was confused about his sexual orientation because he thought he was straight and I think he realized he had special feelings towards his straight best friend, Ford, a detective who got dumped recently by his girlfriend and crashed at Denver's place. I hope his story will be good because I hate friends to lovers trope!

Nixon and Dante certainly helped scratch that itch I have and it's called gimme all the great m/m books itch.
These two were off the charts instant attraction. After an incident on the red carpet Nixon takes on the job of being Dante's bodyguard. He learns very quickly that it might not be the easiest job he's ever taken on but he knows he's up to the challenge. Dante doesn't feel he needs a babysitter and the gorgeous bodyguard he's been assigned might be the one thing to blow his cover, the one that he plans to keep locked away in the closet. Too bad he can't stop himself from poking the bear every chance he gets.
Oh boy, these two were were like a bomb about to go off whenever they were around each other and that was a lot. I loved Dante's sassy, bratty side and Nixon's protective, understanding side. They seemed to mix as well as water and oil but they showed us they mixed like peanut butter and jelly. The perfect compliment to each other.
