A treasure to discover. Very obscure anthology from the 70s, hunted down by my indefatigable hunter/gatherer. Nearly every entry provided a doorway into some aspect of 20th century Newfoundland culture or history, sending me on an internet journey to learn more. Dark stuff. Children starving in outports during the Depression. Miners dying from cancer while rich American businessmen get away scot free. Shipwrecks. Tidal waves. But also beauty, oh and family. Love and tradition and humor. I wonder what climate change is going to do to that place. Everyone lives right next to the sea.
