In 1992, Young Mortimer Drake, age 11, had his first birthday party. After killing his parents and "making his first cake", he is sentenced to psychiatric detention - only for him to escape in the night.
In but a year's time following that fateful day, a new, and far more horrific body count begins to rise. No one knows the identity of the slayer - except as "The Birthday Butcher", who appears to kidnap at least 25-30 victims at a time; each of whom were found mutilated in various ways.
For ten years, the deranged slasher's reign of terror ravaged the town of Harlandville, New York. And each time, no one could ever find or bring him to justice. Could he be stopped, and if so, will the city ever be the same?
These are the collection of notes, headlines, and audio recordings of the madman's vicious acts of depravity.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book boasts a court transcript story telling, which if you’re into true crime as I am, you’ll appreciate this. Where the story falls flat is the lack of environment or even the multitude of Throw away characters. I feel this concept works, but the setting is wrong and can use refinements. While this story is short and kept my attention it did always feel like something was missing, not terrible, but not great either. It was just, Ok.
I appreciate anyone who has the courage and dedication to write.
While the concept is great, I couldn't finish this novella. There was no scenery. I felt as if I was reading a court transcript. The incessant stammering of the witnesses was by far the hardest thing to read. There were no breaks in between a 911 call, an obituary, doctor interviews, etc.
Many writing mistakes were made, mostly with punctuation.
The articles in which the story is held upon are completely unrealistic in the sense no journalist would reveal those types of details in a newspaper. Not even in Gotham.
I have to say the idea was there, but the writing fell flat. I had no idea where I was supposed to be as a reader from one chapter to the next.
Awesome concept, and I hope to see more work in a better stage.
Usually I’d finish a novella this length in one sitting as soon as I get a copy. But this one I had to put off, then down, due to life smacking me in the face.
I initially came across this author on a podcast earlier this year. Then he showed up in my FYP on the clock app. It was a sign.
I’ve loved horror books since I was in high school. Any time I can get my hands on an indie horror author I do. Corpse Child is no different!
This novella isn’t quite what I’d expected, but I didn’t mind the way Mortimer was written. It was a nice change of pace. It was still creepy and graphic, and even horrifying at times. And the way it ended?!? I didn’t expect ever of those final plot twists!
This book tells the story in 911 calls, police interviews, journal reports, buddy chats, and doctor sessions. It is about Mortimer who just wants people to come to his birthday party. He is a relentless serial killer and if he wants you to attend his birthday party he will come and get you. Some of the 911 calls are intense and I really enjoyed the doctor sessions because he told his story of how he became this way and you also see how crazy he is in these sessions. I really enjoyed the story of Mortimer and I really like how it ended.
Mortimer written by Thomas Stewart is a quick and enjoyable read. It’s an epistolary story where through newspaper articles, 911 calls, emails, and therapy session recordings you learn the story of Mortimer a cannibalistic serial killer who just wants to have a great birthday every year!
This story follows 11 year old Mortimer Drake, who later becomes known as the Birthday Butcher, through 10 years of his life and one birthday massacre after another. It initially starts with his mother and father. Bloody, gory, cannibalism, birthday hats, and fear in a small town cements Mortimer into the minds of the reader. Written through a series of newspaper articles, 911 calls, police transcripts, chat messages, etc. makes it even more interesting for the horror lovers out there.
Wow. Read in one sitting. Will be thinking of this book for a while. I enjoyed it but may be slightly scarred for life. Definitely not for those who are not into extreme horror.
This is an entertaining, unique story and the formatting is different, a series of 911 calls, news reports, interviews, etc; it’s different excerpts and horrific happenings keeps you hooked. I will say that there are some grammatical errors that may distract from the story, but i urge readers to still push through as the content and story itself is great.
