A guide to opera written to allow readers to get a quick overview of a particular theme or work in the opera repertoire includes a glossary of operatic terminology, a look at the different voice categories, opera etiquette, and other features
I'm surprised that the ratings for this book are so low. I absolutely loved this book! I fell in love with opera just a few months ago and this book was perfect for me. It answered a lot of questions I had about opera, such as how operas developed, if operas are still composed in modern times, what the difference between opera and musicals are, etc. The author writes in a clear yet sophisticated way. Many introductory books include too many failed attempts at humor; thankfully, this book doesn't.
I do agree that for people who do not already like opera and know nothing about it, this book may come across as long and boring. I'd recommend this book to people who have just gotten into opera and have a lot of unanswered questions!
Can you call a book that's nearly 300 pages long a primer? This book isn't quite an introduction to opera, but it's definitely a great way for people interested in the subject to learn more about the art. Barrymore Laurence Sherer does a fantastic job covering the history and evolution of opera, as well as giving the reader ideas on how best to pursue his/her interest in it. Highly recommended for people who already know a bit about the subject but want to learn more.
A simple review for Opera Lovers. I like the music and the stories but do not have to know all about composers, their place in history, the construction of houses and what is done when donkies shit on stage. This book is all I need to know.
