Researchers have achieved the impossible, resurrecting the wolf-like Tasmanian thylacine. But is it the same animal of old? The creature’s genome has been altered, creating a hybrid the size of a lion with pack-hunting instincts.
Agent Rylan of the Cryptid Investigation Unit is invited to the remote facility to witness their success, and soon discovers a silent partner with ulterior motives. Scarpoint, a private military company, intends to use the hybrid as a covert weapon.
To stop Scarpoint, Agents Rylan and Carter must overcome a pack of trained beasts, backed by a ruthless mercenary force. Against overwhelming odds, the agents of Cryptid Investigation Unit will be in a fight for their lives.
Hybrid Hell picks up the action after Cryptid Killers by giving the reader extra insight into the life of apparent immortal, Rylan, who is now an agent of the Cryptid Investigation Unity she helped to found. Decades ago, she helped to drive into extinction the Tasmanian thylacine, now she has used her resources to back an effort to repopulate the species through a Jurassic Park style process. The problem, of course, is that she is not the project’s only backer and not everyone’s motives are as altruistic as hers. Throw in the villain from the last book who is still trying to get his hands on Rylan so he can experiment on her to determine the key to her immortality and you have most of the pieces for a rousing action adventure. The final piece is a mercenary company that is determined to both bring the thylacine project to fruition for its own purposes and take Rylan down along the way.
Hodge has created two highly interesting characters that he mercilessly thrusts into the worst of situations time and again. It’s a good recipe for an action-adventure novel.
"Cryptid Killers 2: Hybrid Hell" (2023) by Alister Hodge is an exciting novella about the continued adventures of Cryptid Investigation agents Rylans and Carter. The two Australian federal agents battle genetically-mutated, wolf-like Tasmanian thylacines and mercenaries who want to use the animals as war weapons. The story doesn’t go overboard on the slaughter of innocents as the previous one did, but the inclusion of a mystical second cryptid is an unnecessary distraction. Harry Roger Williams III’s narration is a little flat but easy to follow. Still, solidly recommended.
I really enjoyed reading this story. The pair makes a good team and there is always the lingering question of how Rylan got to be ageless and self healing. The two adventures I have read so far have both been original and creative stories with bad guys that readers love to loathe. I can't wait to read the next book in series. I hope there are more to come soon.
Interesting book on bringing back an extinct species, the Tasmanian Tiger. The twist is these are genetically reengineered for military purposes and being sold to a military contractor who has no qualms about how to use them. Carter and Rylan must stop this and destroy these animals. Good read, fast-paced and action packed.
A fast paced unusual story which combined with the first book of the series is worth a reader's time. I'm quite impressed with the author's ability to keep the adrenaline running high.
While trying to to bring back Tasmanian Thylacines, scientists change the DNA code and create a more dangerous version. Rylan and Carter need to stop them being used by a private military firm and asl getting free. Good book, that moves at a nice pace.
Didn't seem as good as the first. It moved along at a good pace and had plenty of action. Way too many f-bombs for me. Every time I saw one it seemed to interrupt the flow of the story. I am doubtful I will read a third book.
Another fun little novel for fans of creature features. Nothing super complex and that's totally fine. Can't wait for the series to continue with new adventures
