Story of a modern day Mississippi lawyer who lies to a judge to get bail for a capitol murderer, and then must deal with his vengeful client after attempting to turn him over to the police for murdering witnesses. He reads his grandfather's turn of the century diary, which is contemporaneously viewed by the reader, and learns of the man's defense of a man falsely accused of murder. Modern times and turn of the century values are contrasted.
