A who's who of the underground as of 1972. As a historical document it is invaluable. It mostly covers the east and west coast (with a few flyoverland denizens like Ann Arbor's John Sinclair.) The scenes encompassed include yippies, writers (including John Giorno and Howard Zinn), artists (including Joe Brainard), music scene folks like Chet Helms, the Warhol crowd (including Taylor Mead photographed in drag), and underground cartoonists like Trina Robbins, Art Spiegelman, and Bill Griffith. Even John Kerry of Vietnam Veterans Against The War. The omissions are interesting as well: Lenny Kaye but no Patti Smith, and Jack Smith is included in a group photograph but doesn't rate an article. The photos by Raeanne Rubenstein are a mix of documentary field shots and studio portraits.
