Chantal was brought up lovingly by her stepmother, Mavreen. Exquisite and beguiling, she is loved by three a debauched French nobleman; a bold, hot-blooded Portuguese pirate; and John, Mavreen’s son. Chantal knows him only as a brother – but he is aware of the truth and will risk anything to win her love. From the glittering ballrooms of aristocratic London, to a French château and a deserted tropical island, Chantal is swept into a whirlwind of ecstasy, scandal and anguish. This unforgettable saga pulses with the same passion and energy as the story of Mavreen, Chantal’s stepmother and her ‘sister’ Tamarisk
Claire Lorrimer began writing at the age of ten, encouraged by her mother who was the author Denise Robins. Her post as a sub editor on a woman's magazine gave her a close insight into the world of publishing, but it was during the Second World War that her writing career became established. She subsequently turned to historical fiction. These novels on an epic scale feature the lives of passionate and striking heroines set against a strongly drawn historical background, often highlighting the situation of women. Claire Lorrimer lives in rural Kent, and is currently busy writing her latest historical novel.
The author (a pseudonym used by Patricia Robins) knows how to keep the reader glued to the plot which has hints of historical fiction (Wellington Mozart, Litz, George Sand among others were cited), romance and pirates as well.
Even if I haven't read the first books of this trilogy, I was able to follow the character's involvement.
This was one of Aunt Mary's books, so it didn't have a dust cover to give me a clue about the contents. When I searched GoodReads and Amazon I figured out that it was a Historical Romance and the third of a trilogy, but having been burned by The Farmhouse and the Hickory Grove Series I decided not to read the first two books. If this one was good enough for Aunt Mary, it's good enough for me. It sounded interesting, so I dove in.
There's a LOT going on in this story. Chantal is a beautiful young lady and makes all the men love her - even the evil ones change their ways to try to have her. There's a fake Viscount with a wife in the attic, a shipwreck and a Pirate, plus all kinds of extra bits and bobs to add to the fun. It's all a bit much and way overdone, so it really almost seems like a parody of a romance novel, but I think Lorrimer meant it to be serious, which actually made it even funnier to me.
Honestly, although it was ridiculous, I enjoyed it. I rolled my eyes and laughed and groaned at the ridiculousness, but it was a fun read. I won't bother with any more books by Lorrimer, but this was a good way to spend a few hours.
An unforgettable third novel in the the Women of Fire trilogy. The beautiful and spirited Chantal is swept into a wild and dangerous adventure. Again, I found Clair Lorrimer's book a real page-turner and was disappointed when it come to the end. A must read.
