Okay, so I'm going to go against the grain as normal. I really enjoyed this book. I only realized after 1/4 way through that I've seen this movie since "Maniac" in my head was showing as Matthew Lillard (love that actor). I don't remember much else from the movie so that was good since my brain didn't transfer and compare anything.

This produced an emotional reaction. I found myself laughing, then tearing up a bit over Rosie. Don't want to give spoilers. That's good. Shows me how much I got into the book, and I did. I didn't want to put it down when I had to go to bed. The writing is good, loved the storyline. But now because of the ending, I'm going to have to look for the continuance to read. Overall, great book.

I really enjoyed this novel. It's thorough and gives so much more story compared to the film. Blair is actually a developed, interesting character here. We learn what the Pilgrims are and Blair being one is an integral part of the story. So many cut characters and moments that were filmed (or at least in earlier drafts of the script), including the famed "Traitor Sub-plot", that were cut resulting in a gutted film that focused on the action moments without much exposition for the who and the why. The Kilrathi are explained in detail, the villains have names and personalities, we understand the enemy and have an idea of their culture/views. I grew up with the film. I watched it countless times on HBO back in 2000, and then bought the DVD back in High School, so it's safe to say Wing Commander is a film I grew up with and know pretty well. Reading this novel was like a new experience, it was like a new tale all over. I highly recommend it to the handful of Wing Commander (film) fans out there as it presents the story in a new light and makes the tale so much more coherent. Shame the Theatrical Cut of the film was so cut up, maybe one day we will see the rough, original cut but until that day, this novel is your closest experience to that.
