Japan's most celebrated samurai, sword-saint Miyamoto Musashi, wasn't always an enlightened warrior-philosopher - for the path to greatness is filled with adversity and difficult life-decisions. Musashi wants to take on Yagyu Sekishusai, a man recognized by many to be the greatest living swordsman around. But Sekishusai is an ailing old man and Musashi is on the verge of killing him in his sleep. Will this act truly take Musashi further along the path to enlightenment by way of the sword?
Chapter 098. "Unrivaled" (無双) Chapter 099. "Son of the Invincible" (天下無双の仔) Chapter 100. "The Real Thing" (真贋) Chapter 101. "The Blue Sky" (蒼天) Chapter 102. "The Infinite Universe" (天下無限) Chapter 103. "Farewell at Dawn" (暁の別れ) Chapter 104. "Autumn Sky" (秋空) Chapter 105. "Journey" (旅路) Chapter 106. "Footprints" (足痕) Chapter 107. "The Road to Ise" (伊勢路)
Miyamoto Musashi finally meets Yagyu Sekishusai and it's an encounter he did not expect. Sekishusai is an old man and Musashi has him at his mercy in his sleep, but it ends in a way that is unexpected. Avoiding spoilers, all I could say that the encounter changed both men.
Otsu also had a meaty part in this volume. For once, she isn't just eye candy for Musashi and the rest. Again avoiding spoilers, one does not stay with a master swordsman who is probably the best of them and not learn a thing or two.
Another strong volume, Vagabond is blowing all my expectations away.
Finally, Otsu is accompanying Jotaro in finding Musashi! I was seriously frustrated when I thought that they'd be separated (Otsu and Musashi) again. The distance is really killing me. And, I've been waiting for this event for a few volumes now since Jotaro's appearance. I just really love the found-family trope. Augh!
But I'm more excited for the next volume! I have to see the chain and sickle weapon. Oh no, wait. Major flashback!! Was it the girl Matahachi encountered in a glimpse?! She was carrying a chain and sickle! Oh, no! I really have to see the next one!!
I hate Matahachi so much, I dread every chapter he is in. He runs when faced with the truth. Befitting of a man of his caliber. People are starting to notice he's an imposter too.
“Invincible. Why do I want to become invincible? Tell me, old man… What does it mean to be invincible?!”
“Swimming in the middle of an ocean, one can never realize how vast it truly is.”
“The world is infinite, it encompasses everything.”
“It's been four years since I left my village. I've experienced a number of formidable fights. I was convinced I was making progress. However, in comparison to the grandness of the invincible Yagyu Sekishusai, I am nothing.”
“What does it mean to be invincible? Musashi, 'invincible', it's merely a word.”
“To be 'invincible.' The more you think about it. The more you squint your eyes in desperation to see, the more obscured the answer becomes. If something's too obscure to see, then try closing your eyes. Do you see how infinite you are?”
“This is a good place; you won't be lonely here.”
“He didn't leave me behind! We just got separated. I'm sure he looked for me. He just couldn't find me!! My master, he patted me on the head and then he said, 'let's become stronger together'.”
In Volume 11 of Vagabond, the narrative intricately explores the interwoven lives of a vast array of characters, each bound together by fate’s powerful pull. Every character, from Musashi Miyamoto to the various warriors, monks, and villagers he encounters, carries their own distinct ambitions, pains, and philosophies. Yet, despite their differences, they all march inexorably toward the same unavoidable fate, highlighting the relentless cycle of conflict and ambition that pervades their world.
Matahachi dando la cacha as usual.
Excellent manga I picked used & cheap, because I've enjoyed other samurai manga such as "Lone Wolf & Cub." Based on the life of Musashi, I had no trouble following the story, despite this being volume eleven. The art is gorgeous and the story compelling and introspective. If this book is any indication, this is a series I would love to read in full.
My last review mentioned the ill things Takuzo keeps doing and yet as a reader we are rooting for him , so this book actually addressed this issue and made even Takuzo go introspective. It was all super cool .
