C. Terry Warner explores why it is essential that we forgive those who offend us. He explains that to refuse to forgive is to deny the Atonement of Christ and place a limit on His capacity to forgive and heal us.
A powerful talk. I have never looked at victimhood so clearly. It reinforces my religious convictions concerning agency and accountability. It helps me to make sense out of a world that is often filled with both brutal and broken people who must both love and forgive. It is a great companion read with Bonds That Make Us Free.
One of the best talks on the power of forgiveness I've ever heard. Brother Warner explains the connection of the Atonement and forgiveness in a powerful, understandable way. It's a beautiful talk.
Yet another example of why I'm grateful for my Deseret Bookshelf Plus membership! After a bit of research, I found this talk was originally presented by C. Terry Warner as "Scapegoating and Atonement" at the 1994 BYU Women's Conference. It was available for a while as an audiocasette, and then on CD (in 2006)... but now ONLY as a download directly from Deseret Book for $1.99, or FREE with membership in Bookshelf Plus. It was also handpicked and included in the book _To Rejoice As Women: Talks From The 1994 BYU Women's Conference_, which I happily found second hand (yea!). I just listened to the audio again, while reading to compare. Bro Warner's writing style is meticulous, so there are some grammatical and style corrections made in the printed version, but the beauty of the message is the same.
In this talk Bro Warner tells two stories in particular which are in his 2001 classic book _Bonds That Make Us Free_, but since that book was prepared for publication to a broader audience it's missing the details from a restored gospel perspective that he retains in his presentation here for his BYU audience.
Also, (especially) for the Latter-day Saint audience, I highly recommend the books written by Bro Warner's Arbinger Institute collegue James L. Ferrell, particularly _The Peacegiver_ which is written in story form and further illustrates the role the Atonement can have on our everyday lives. I HIGHLY recommend all these resources -- ENJOY!!
This is life changing! The most poignant part is the explanation of how when we do not forgive that we keep reinsuring ourselves and allowing ourselves to be victimized over and over. I recommend to anyone truly searching to change and find peace within.
Why We Forgive is a very Spiritual talk by C. Terry Warner. It is an explanation of why we as Christians and followers of Christ, need to Forgive. Forgiveness is for both the Victim and the Perpetrator of hard experiences. Healing is available through the Atonement of Christ, from pain, hurt and even abuse. Brother Warner reminds us that if we do not forgive, than how can we expect to be forgiven ourselves? He elaborates on Scapegoating and blaming others for their abuse or problems. The Therapy of Forgiveness blames no one as he has said. Forgiveness can be the work of a lifetime; as he stated. It is an amazing work which can take a very long time & be very challenging.
Another great writer/thinker/speaker. I love Terry Warner's thoughts, even in magazine articles; he is articulate, spiritual w/o being proud, and makes you think.
This sermon has had a more profound effect on my understanding of Jesus Christ's atonement than any other non-scriptural work I have ever read. It is a must read for everyone!
