I read and wrote a report for this book as part of a graduate class. I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it, despite being required to read it. I found it illuminating and fascinating. I had no idea such "nonviolent" societies existed around the world. It makes me hopeful, and realize that the adage regarding human nature being inherently violent is not true. My main criticism of the book is that each society is described from a Western view, which I believe may make some of the conclusions offered biased to a certain degree. I know it can be impossible to escape such bias, but I still think some of these chapters could've explored the subject society in a different, more open way, I suppose.
